The concept of being free has always come with a considerable cost, nothing goes unrewarded, and the fight for freedom and independence is purposeful for some benefits at the end. Women are the most victimized people in the society. They experience various sort of oppression and discrimination. There right and freedom is infringed affecting their social, political and economic life. The struggle for liberty among women continues to exist over the years. They are struggling with the society to attain their freedom. The secrecy of Dominican politics in Latin America aids in the development of characters, allowing them to establsish that freedom comes at a cost. Anita clearly brings this concept to the novel. She is ready to take her chances on whatever cost that might come on her way concerning her freedom. She believes that it is her obligation to free herself from dictatorship and oppression. She tells her mother that life without freedom can equally be termed as no life at all. Freedom is a significant aspect of living (Alvarez 12). People must be free to conduct their life and govern themselves and when this freedom is taken away is same as killing a person or taking away their life. In the view of Anita, freedom was everything and the right to have self-freedom was mendatory to her. She expresses the urge to liberty to the extent of fighting to gain freedom if it was not given. Or rather, a person should flee and search for freedom in same other places if they cannot receive it where they are. Without freedom, Anita would opt to go and search for it outside as the only option of finding peace in life. There are unjust laws that have been put in place to control and govern the people. This rule is what Anita is against, they are not just in their action as they are oppressive to a particular group of people in the society. Anita act of civil disobedience is indicated through her idea of running away with her mother to escape the unjust leadership that was practice ion his hometown. Her family is also determined to over through the dictatorial government. This is an act of civil disobedience, being repulsive of unjust laws that do not protect the right and freedom of people within the society. Women have been oppressed and discriminated in most parts of the world. Their position in political participation is seen to be absurd and unethical. This is similar to what Anita and the family was subjected to; their family was kept in surveillance with the policy regularly checking. This was an act of infringement of their right and freedom. They were denied various obligation and their activities were closely monitored.
