The Theme of Freedom
In the short stories we read in class, the theme of Freedom plays a significant role in the lives of the Protagonists: Mrs. Mallard, Sammy and Monteesor. In this essay, I will talk about how each of the protagonists are being driven by the theme of freedom.
In The Story of an Hour, written by Kate Chopin, talked about the desire of Mrs. Mallard to receive true freedom through her husband’s death. In the time when the story was written (1894) men were favored in all domestic affairs and left woman without any right. Mrs. Mallard the protagonist in the story was tied by the rights of men over women. She wanted to escape these restrictions and gain freedom, but her only way to find true freedom and still be accepted by society

The protagonist, Sammy worked in an A&P grocery store, as a courtesy clerk. he does not wanted to ended up like his co-worker Stokesie, so Sammy wants to quit his job to gain his freedom, he however could not just quit, he then uses the three girls that step in with their bathing suit at the store as an excuse to do what he wants, while at the same time trying to defend the girls and look good in their eyes. Sammy sees Lengel scolding the girls for being improperly dressed as an insult and felt sorry for the girls. Although he wanted to somehow be a hero in the eyes of the girls based on line 20 paragraph 3 “The girls who 'd blame them, are in a hurry to get out, so I say "I quit" to Lengel quick enough for them to hear, hoping they 'll stop and watch me, their unsuspected hero. They keep right on going, into the electric eye; the door flies open and they flicker across the lot to their car, Queenie and Plaid and Big Tall Goony-Goony (not that as raw material she was so bad), leaving me with Lengel and a kink in his eyebrow.” he however also uses this opportunity to gain the freedom he yearns for. According to him, his friend has given him thousands of injuries and insults he finally wants revenge. And the only way this could be done is for him to kill Fortunato. With Fortunato knowing the reason and without leaving any trace that he killed him. Which come with the saying for one person to be free, another must die. Montresor manage to trick Fortunato to come with him to the catacomb or an underground graveyard where the Amontillado, a special kind of wine was placed. through out the story, Montresor try not to disclose his plan by acting as if he does not have any intention of hurting Fortunate, which of cause the only thing he wanted was to gain his freedom of being look down on, and insulted. After he buried him alive in the Catacomb, Montresor became free from his anger and humiliation through his actions of killing his friend. Montresor’s impulsive need for revenge causes him to formulate a plan to murder his acquaintance. When they arrive at the Montresor estate, Montresor leads Fortunato down the stairs into the catacombs. Down here is where the Amontillado Fortunato is going to taste and where the revenge of Montresor is going to take place. As he get closer and closer, the narrator opens up more and more to how he is going to kill his "friend". It sound like it is a premeditated murder. Montresor seems so inconspicuous that he acts like he cares about Fortunato which is still a part of his plan.
The Story of an Hour is a short story of Ms. Mallard, a woman with a heart condition who receives short term good news. Chopin uses contrast between independence, marriage, and gender to show how hidden emotions can effect a woman’s actions in the time period where women did not have much power or right to speak what came to their mind.

In the short story, “The Story of an Hour,” author Kate Chopin presents the character of Mrs. Louis Mallard. She is an unhappy woman trapped in her discontented marriage. Unable to assert herself or extricate herself from the relationship, she endures it. The news of the presumed death of her husband comes as a great relief to her, and for a brief moment she experiences the joys of a liberated life from the repressed relationship with her husband. The relief, however, is short lived. The shock of seeing him alive is too much for her bear and she dies. The meaning of life and death take on opposite meaning for Mrs. Mallard in her marriage because she lacked the courage to stand up for herself.

In Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour”, it talks about marriage and a woman’s life in the 1800’s. This story illustrates the stifling nature of a woman’s role during this time through Mrs. Mallard’s reaction to her husband’s death. When Mrs. Mallard obtains news that her husband is dead, she is hurt after a brief moment and then she is delighted with the thought of freedom. This story shows how life was in the mid 1800’s and how women were treated around that time.
In conclusion, “The story of an hour” is a clear depiction that women status in the society determines the choices they make about their lives. In this work, Chopin depicts a woman as a lesser being without identity or voices of their own. They are expected to remain in oppressive marriages and submit to their husbands without question.
Kate Chopin wrote a short piece called “The Story of an Hour” about a woman’s dynamic emotional shift who believes she has just learned her husband has died. The theme of Chopin’s piece is essentially a longing for more freedom for women.
In Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour”, the struggle for freedom is dominant. The main character, Mrs. Mallard, stands for a woman who is struggling internally and externally for freedom. After the sudden loss of her husband, Mrs. Mallard gets a taste of the freedom she was lacking in her marriage. Like Mrs. Mallard, women throughout history have struggled to find freedom and success away from their husbands. Chopin herself only became successful after the loss of her husband. In “The Story of an Hour”, Chopin shows women’s struggle for freedom during the Victorian period through Mrs. Mallard’s struggle for her own freedom.

Mrs. Erin Gruwell had compassion for the students; when they saw how much she cared they changed their perspectives on life. Against all odds toward against Mrs. Erin Gruwell, she had the power of human will to teach the student. The writer introduced several scenarios on how young innocent children were influenced by family and friends of the same racial background to create hatred and gang’s violence against other races. Five messages in Freedom Writer are: Non judgmental, Racism, having compassion, the power of the human will, and education. Being non judgmental, having compassion and having human will helped Mrs. Erin Gruwell educate the children at Woodrow Wilson Classical High School. Segregated by race, united with education.
