Mascorro 4article by Liz Weston. “You might be surprised to learn, then, that the actual poll of 30,000college alumni found that the vast majority of college graduates agreed that their education wasworth the cost. Recent graduates were less enthusiastic than older graduates, but only the recentgraduates who took out more than $50,000 in loans were unlikely to agree that their degreeswere worth what they paid.”() is what Liz Weston said were the actual polls about recentgraduates. Among those who graduated between 2006 and 2015, some 65% agreed theireducations were worth the cost, with 27% choosing “4” and 38% responding with a “5.”Collegegraduates aged 25 to 32 who are working full time earn about $17,500 more annually than theirpeers who …show more content…
It is very difficult not having a degree and trying to get a decent goodpaying job. In the coming weeks, tens of thousands of young adults who graduated from collegelast spring will get their first payment notice for their student loans. As they look at the bill withan average monthly payment closing in on $400. Which is a lot better than most peopleconsidering the ones who don't have a degree and only a high school degree have not had thesame chances that other people have had. There is other issues however like the choosing of a career which is very hard becausenot all pay the same and not all are attractive. For example, nowadays there's not much manualwork that people do like being a mechanic. “But there are also systemic changes in the economy, arising from information technology, that have the surprising effect of making the manual trades— plumbing, electrical work, car repair — more attractive as careers.” Matthew says this inorder to point out that society is trying to bring back people who can do work by hand. There ispeople trying to make less likable jobs more attractive because they are running out of peoplewho specialize in that job. Everyone is going into office jobs where there isn't much physical andnot much mental effort. For example, “Put differently, mechanical work has required me tocultivate different intellectual habits. Further, habits of mind have an ethical dimension that wedon’t often think about. Good diagnosis …show more content…
Liberal learning introduces them to books and the music, the science and the philosophy that form disciplined yet creative habits of mind that are notreducible to the material circumstances of one’s life (though they may depend on thosecircumstances).“(Roth 1) This is what Matthew says about a liberal arts degree which is a verybalanced and good degree. With a liberal arts education students are not limited to only one kindof job because with that degree they can go into different specialties and have good knowledgeon it. The advantages of having a liberal arts degree instead of a specialized degree are muchmore beneficial compared to other degrees. For example, michael roth says “ A quick look atseveral members of President-elect Obama’s leadership team can stand as an example of howthose with a liberal arts education are shaping the future of our society.” this signifying thatpeople who run our country some of the most successful people specialized in having a liberalArts Degree.“Given the pace of technological and social change, it no longer makes sense todevote four years of higher education entirely to specific skills. Being ready on DAY ONE, mayhave sounded nice on the campaign trail, but being able to draw on one’s education over alifetime is much more practical (and precious).” Michael says this to make notice that aspeciality is no longer needed because nowadays it is more important to be ready on day one andhave some
Since high school and now through my second year of college I have had one goal for my future, that goal was to graduate college with a degree in criminal justice. Not being interested in math or science, I was discouraged by the fact of taking classes that had nothing to do with my career choice. Thus being said, many people that I talked too felt the same way as I did. Which constantly led me to question what the importance of a liberal education was. After reading an essay called The Liberal Arts Are Not Elitist by Martha Nussbaum and relating it to an essay by William Cronon called The Goals of a Liberal Education, my perspective changed. An education is more than just a degree in your field of study, but an overall basic knowledge in which will inspire people to be the absolute best they can be.
But the best argument against a liberal education is perhaps the simplest. When students go to any college, they choose a major and take classes that are related to that major. However to get to those classes they have to take courses in , reading, writing, and history. I don’t think that Zakaria realises this. By the time these students graduate, they will be able to understand all of the technical aspects of their field, as well as being able to express their thoughts and ideas clearly. All of this without a traditional Liberal
Are too many people pursuing a liberal studies degree when it is not necessary? When planning for the future, people need to be well educated about what they are about to be doing. People need to base their future stories on what will benefit them the most Charles Murray, the author of “Are Too Many People Going to College?”, seems to think to many people are going to college. In his article, he discusses many different points about why to many people are getting degrees. However, Murray’s text is ineffective because he is very vague, his points do not always correlate with each other, and he did not target a large enough audience.
In the article “The New Liberal Arts,” Sanford J. Ungar presents the argument of why liberal arts schools are still competitive and useful today. The beginning of the article immediately addresses the problem that Ungar is defending, “Hard economic times inevitably bring scrutiny of all accepted ideals and institutions, and this time around liberal-arts education has been especially hit hard.” The author provides credibility through his time of being a liberal arts presidents, applies statistics about the enrollment and job security outside of liberal college, he addresses the cost factor and how a student may find compensation, and that a liberal arts college is not preparing students for success. The article “The New Liberal Arts,” addresses
In “Should the Obama Generation Drop Out?” Charles Murray talks about how a college degree now days, is looked at higher than it should be when it comes to meeting the qualifications for a job. Most jobs that pay over minimum wage will require you to have a college degree, making it very difficult for people that either can’t afford it or do not believe in it, to get a reliable well paying job. Like Barack Obama said “It’s what you can do that should count when you apply for a job, not where you learned to do it”(Murray 97); a large amount of people have the skills for a job but do not have the degree to show for, making them not qualified for the job. Companies will not even give you an interview if your resume does not have any type of degree on it. That situation makes life very unfair for multiple individuals. There should be some kind of certification test for applicant to take to see if he or she meets the skills needed for the job. The benefits of discarding the bachelor’s degree as a job qualification would be huge for both employers and job applicants. Therefo...
“Hence you see why “liberal studies” are so called; it is because they are studies worthy of a free- born gentlemen. But there is only one really liberal study – that which gives a man his liberty. It is the study of wisdom”, said Lucius Annaeus Seneca, the Roman Stoic philosopher who lived during the time of Jesus Christ. Historically speaking, learning liberal arts we learn ourselves to be passionate, loyal, brave and what is more important, generous. The word “freedom” has been the fundamental component of any American Dream. Today we celebrate our nation’s independence and allowance to govern ourselves.
As people try to begin to understand liberal arts from a Christian point of view, there have been many writers that have written on this topic and have many different opinions about it. Three of the most famous writers are Holmes, De Gaetano, and Cross. A Christian liberal arts education makes us better leaders, people, and followers of Christ because it helps us know right from wrong. A liberal arts education teaches us to distinctly know the difference between right and wrong, and the path that God has chosen for us to follow. This type of education also gives students the freedom to become everything God has granted us with the ability to become.
A liberal arts curriculum is often debated in many circumstances. Some people believe the liberal arts curriculum is not necessary for a college career, but this is not true. A liberal arts curriculum provides the teachings of necessary skills and ideas that are not taught by just learning a technical skill. People who pursue a liberal arts curriculum are often more successful in college and after college because this curriculum provides teaching in areas such as human development, communication
When young adults complete high school they’re encouraged to enroll in a higher education program. With the constant talks of soaring tuition costs, in addition to the massive student loan debt, taking this step can be worrisome. Reyna Gobel, a journalist on financing college education and repaying student debt, states. “It’s easy to stop believing that a college education is worth it when the nation has over a trillion dollars in debt, but college graduates still earn more over a lifetime than those without a degree. Plus, they’re more employable.” More than three-quarters of all college graduates agree that higher education is indeed still worth the cost. Additional education in a field you’re passionate towards
Higher education is optional, but to enter a respectable career, one must continue their education in order to achieve his financial and/or personal goals. Teenagers who attend college use their extended schooling to further obtain knowledge. The primary objective of higher education is to enhance one’s abilities for his future. A student can learn from school in numerous ways, but liberal education is not a way to attract students into further and higher education. However, students can learn a lot more through experiences that have affected their personal lives. I agree with author Mike Rose’s theory that education needs are reached to obtain a higher academic level by teaching students information that can be related to their personal experiences and mentality.
The purpose of a liberal arts education is to teach students to understand and be empathetic towards those from their own and other cultures. This education is also more personalized and less training which leads to the discovery of personal truths, and perhaps a venture down a suitable career path which will bring happiness and purpose rather than money and power. Additionally, this education gives students knowledge, and lessens conflicts because of intolerance.
Education", really drives home the importance and benefits of a liberal arts education. And when
Whether it is lack of funds to pay for college, or the need for someone to have an income now to support their family, there is no doubt that finances are one of the main reasons why college should not be required for everyone. Even with the many grant and loan opportunities available, many people still cannot afford to attend college. For one, most people do not want to take out loans because they do not want to graduate college, only to start out their career in deep debt. Also, since grants for those graduating high school depend on their caregivers’ income, that income may be above the allowable threshold which makes the student ineligible to receive any grants. However, their parents may not earn enough to afford to shell out the money for a college education. Those who are fortunate enough to qualify for grants may not receive enough to pay for all the expenses that accompany college. Even if the grants cover tuition, they may not cover living expenses. Some may see the solution to this would be for those students to work while going to school. Unfortunately, many people, especially if they struggled with their grades in high school, have to dedicate a large amount of time to their studies to make passing grades. This makes it difficult to work and go to college. Financial hardships have made people look for career alternatives that they can make a decent wage without a college degree. According to the Department of Labor, there are over 1,000 career areas through the Registered Apprenticeship program where people can enjoy a successful career without racking up education debt (Apprentices). This is appealing because they can earn a paycheck from day one in these fields while learning new skills. Since many college-age people have families to support, this career path better suits their
One degree that Sanford J. Ungar, author of “The New Liberal Arts,” believes is very influential is a liberal arts degree. Sanford states that, “a growing number of corporations are headed by people with liberal-arts degrees” (228). He also states that, “more than three-quarters of our nation’s employers recommend that collegebound students pursue a liberal education” (228). This exhibits Sanford’s belief that liberal arts degrees are very valuable to one’s career field. Not only are liberal arts degrees valuable in one career field, but they also allow graduates to pursue a number of careers without being stuck to one set career path. Although liberal arts degrees can be very beneficial to a college student’s future career, “A large proportion of people who are theoretically able to absorb a liberal education have no interest in doing so” (240), states Charles Murray. One reason for this is because a liberal education may not entail the specific skills that a student is looking to gain when pursuing a future career. Rather a liberal arts degree focuses on enabling the student to think outside of the box to recreate the world around
The importance of school has been emphasized for the people that come from the working class or people that do not have the most money, since a very young age. They have the idea from their parents that education will ensure a better future with a sure thing for financial security. However, not everyone wants to have the same education. Liberal education is an approach on college education that empowers and prepares people to deal with complexity, diversity, and challenge as said by Association of American Colleges & Universities website. It should not be confused with general education that is part of liberal education by being the education that is shared by all students. The lessons that are given are taught in a broader sense so that kids can learn about a certain subject for themselves and gain more interest in the certain subject to then go on to
