As the novel can not exist without character, character can not exist without problems. This incontrovertible perspective leads to the analysing of every character which results in the unearthing of inevitable problems which the characters try to overcome. In Chetan Bhagat’s Five Point Someone, characters like Ryan Oberoi, Hari Kumar, Alok Gupta, Prof. Veera and Neha Cherian play their part in order to find solution for the crises. Ryan oberoi, Hari kumar and Alok Gupta face many common academic challenges. Though their approaches to the problems seem to vary, they are combined to face with a common solution. He along with his class mates- Ryan and Alok faces the problem of ragging at midnight in their hostel. He feels ragging as horrible. The senior students named Anurag and Baku make Hari’s life a total mess. Baku, ‘a lungi clad human toothpick’ growls, “You bloody freshers, dozing away eh? Rascals, who will give an introduction?” (p.3). Hari makes his head under pressure and seems to be obedient. Though ragging is illegal and culpable, Baku and other seniors make Hari and his friends nude. Ragging has been a burning issue for a few years. The special correspondent of The Hindu shares the negative impact of ragging and the efforts to prevent ragging in an article- Say ‘no’ to ragging of a supplement of The Hindu- Education plus on the 19th of July, 2010: The beginning of an academic year is the time to make new friends. But for many students it is also the time when the menace of ragging raises its ugly head in many institutions. Educational institutions, the government and NGOs have been working hard to make sure this bane goes away.
