Atwood writes “Siren Song” is written in free verse, thus enhances her main ideas. In a free verse poem, there is no rhyme or organized meter. However she has other organizing elements exist in order to strengthen the speaker in the poems ideas and main purpose of the poem. There are nine stanzas, in which each has three lines. The three lines appear to mirror the three sirens that are mentioned in the poem. The speaker is one, and then she says, “with these two feathery maniacs”(16), referring to the other sirens that accompany her singing. Moreover, enjambment plays a major role in this poem, because it drive the poem in significant moments. The speaker ends a stanza not fully completing her thought, making it so that the audience feels more
curious and interested by what she will reveal next to them. Moments like these are seen when the Siren says, “Come closer. This song/ is a cry for help: Help me!” (27-28). That slow pause is essential to building up the suspense and interest of the readers. Furthermore, this poem is created around the allusion to the Greek myth of The Odyssey. In order to understand the poem, one needs to be able to recall that in this Greek mythology, Odysseus and his seamen encounters Sirens that make men jump off boat when they hear Sirens sing to them and die. Therefore, Odysseus has to take measures and plug his mens ears and tie himself up to restain from leaping off boat. Similarly to Atwood's poem she writes about men doing the same when hearing the song (4-5).
Pearl is an example of the innocent result of sin. All the kids make fun of Pearl and they disclude her from everything. Examine the Themes of Innocence and Experience in To Kill a Mockingbird. Innocence is a time when a person has never done something; it is the first step in the journey from innocence to experience. The second step in this movement is experience and this is what is achieved after. a person has done something they have never done before or learns something they have never known before. This theme of growth from innocence to experience occurs many times in To Kill a Mockingbird and is one of the central themes in the first part of the novel, because it shows how Jem and Scout change and mature over a small period of time.
A stereotype is a trap, a cage, which restricts individuals to one identity. Once a stereotype is created, it is hard to overcome and leaves traces of prejudice. In agreement with Alicia Ostriker’s The Thieves of Language: Women Poets and Revisionist Mythmaking, Margaret Atwood’s poem “Siren Song” is a reach out for women to express feelings on gender discrimination without coming across in a way that would engender negative support. “Siren Song”, is written from the perspective of a siren, in a mythological setting but with a contemporary tone, that is restricted to the stereotype of a seductress who seeks to sing men to their deaths but in reality, she wants to break free and find someone that will not fall for her song.
I found that Elegy for the Giant Tortoises by Margaret Atwood had a more powerful depiction of extinction. Through the poem Atwood demonstrates that humans have a tendency of caring more about species that are extinct, but at the same time do very little to prevent these other species from ending up that way in the beginning. In the last stanza, Atwood says, “the relic of what we have destroyed” (line 23) probably had the most impact on me. This is because we tend to value the image of the species more once they are extinct rather than honoring their actual lives, as well as honoring them while they were living. They are often rendered as birds with the head of a woman. In Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus and his men must pass the island of the Sirens in order to return to Ithaca, their homeland. In order to prevent his men from jumping overboard towards the enchanting song, Odysseus plugs his men’s ears with wax, and then he is tied down and listens to the song. The song compels Odysseus head towards the island, but his obedient men ignore his hysterical cries.
