What does it take for someone to earn the title of leader? In other words, what essential ingredients make up a leader? All leaders are different, and not all leaders go through the same path to earn their title. However, there is one crucial element that a leader requires in order to even be considered for the position and have other follow him or her. In the song “Fight Song” by Rachel Patten, Patten exclaims to listeners how the song they are listening to is her way of changing her life around and being a different person. She also sings about how she will not let her past demons take over her life anymore. An example of this in the story is when the author describes her mother’s history and how, despite it, she saw a better future in store for her family and thrived to make it a reality. The author explains, “America was where all my mother's hopes lay. She had come to San Francisco in 1949 after losing everything in China: her mother and father, her home, her first husband, and two daughters, twin baby girls. But she never looked back with regret. Things could get better in so many ways” (Tan 1). This shows that the author’s mother did not let her crippling past stop her from having hope for the future and the will to give her family a better life. She always saw that things could and would get better with hard work. Through this light inside her, she became a leader and role model to her family who followed her without a second thought into an unknown land with an unknown culture. This poem compares the hatred that people show the author and how she counteracts them. She does not let the opinions or words of others hurt her or have an affect on her. The author sees herself as much better than other people’s opinion of her. She shows this when she says, “You may shoot me with your words,/ You may cut me with your eyes,/ You may kill me with your hatefulness,/ But still, like air, I’ll rise” (Angelou). In this quote, the author shows her persistence to not let the hostility that people show her get to her. She is determined to rise through all their words no matter how cruel they are. This quality is pivotal for anyone hoping to be considered a leader because there will always be those who oppose a leader's decisions and try to bring them down through words or actions. Understanding the leadership is a responsibility of an APN, the following final question was posed to Ms. Gordner. “Of the four pillars of leadership; professionalism, inspirational motivation, interpersonal relationships, and business skills, do you feel that one is more important than another, and why?” She responded,

Throughout the centuries, this world has maintained various leaders that have ruled far and wide, or a small domain. All of which had various roles, morals, goals, etc.; some infamous, some admired, and some truly despised. There is a vast amount of written works pertaining to become a great leader. Lao-Tzu and Niccoló Machiavelli are prime examples of people who have written works about the topic, yet their views and ideas differ greatly. Yet, despite their opposite views, their intake and thoughts about leadership, both Lao-Tzu and Machiavelli’s indulge logically and carefully on a more personal and human level.
This phrase demonstrates her confidence and feeling of superiority to those around her because she has to be bold and unforgiving to be taken seriously or even noticed. When Angelou states “like air, I’ll rise” (24) from “a past that’s rooted in pain” (31), she is depicting that although she and her people have suffered in the past, there is nothing that can hinder her from rising now. This feeling of invincibility and pride is what allows her to fight racism and overcome hate. Since we are all born, the best answer to this question is: leaders are born and then made. A good leader is always moving forward; he never repeats the same thing! They strives to seek new experiences and they are in a constant self improving mode, that means he takes in information from a multitude of sources, including but not limited to his own interpretation of life experiences, observations, journals, website, informal training from an excellent mentor as well as from more formal training that is given in an academic setting.
The Taoist philosopher Lao Tzu put it best when he said, “A leader is best when people barley know he exists, When his work is done, his aim fulfilled, They will say: We did it ourselves.” Often when a person thinks of a leader they think of such great leaders as George Washington, George Patton, and Thomas Jackson. The word “leader” itself will invoke images of die-hard men with the charisma to command anyone and overcome anything. Yet despite this common image there was no theory of leadership that covered this common belief in a “super” leader.
Becoming a leader is never an easy task. It is complex with rational decision making and accepting responsibility for those decisions. Being the leader, does not mean that you always make the best choice, but it does mean you learn and grow from all you experiences. Sometimes becoming a leader is not a choice, but a responsibility that you inherit. Leaders are not born, but are created through trial and error. A true leader cares for his subordinate and will always respect, listen, and mentor them, but a true leader will also discipline correct subordinates when needed. Sometimes a leader needs to depend on his faith and look to a higher power, so that he can make choices with guidance.
Leaders do not just appear out of thin air and automatically start making great things happen in the world. A leader must learn from prior leaders or role models that they are surrounded by that they look up to. Not everyone can be a leader, only some people have the correct characteristics it takes to lead others in the right direction. Those who do great things, for example volunteering at a homeless shelter, are not leaders. Many people mistake a “great person” as being a leader, which is completely incorrect (Kouzes and Posner, p. 3). While playing an active role in your community is a positive thing it does not make someone a leader of that community. All leaders have a group of people they have inspiration too and that is a good way of determining who your personal leaders are. My mother, brother, and grandfather are my leaders because I have always looked up to them and tried to mimic some of the great things that I have seen them do. My mother has always been an independent women with goals and an action plan to accomplish those set goals. Stephen, my elder brother, is outgoing and tends to have a leveled head when it comes to evaluating stressful situations. My grandfather is the most caring person I know and he is amazing at keeping situations under control in order to please everyone. These are all the qualities I want to combine into my own leadership style. I know I am not a efficient leader of these actions yet, but I plan on growing into this as I more on into my career, fulfill my set goals, and adjust to the curve-balls that life throws at me.
The speaker in Angelou’s poem is the confident black woman that many of us, even outside of the black race, aspire to be. She represents classiness by the nature and smoothness of her words and representing strength by using an assertive attitude throughout the poem. She asks several rhetorical questions of the reader that carry great meaning. The speaker asks if her “sassiness” causes an upset to the reader, yet answers her own question with a reference to the way she walks, which is so full of confidence one may think “oil wells...[are] in [her] living room”(“Still” 2). This stanza shows that she is self-assured of herself and needs any other options besides her own. Mentioning the idea of “oil wells” in her house shows that she may not literally be rich, but she is rich in spirit. She also asks if “[her] haughtiness offend[s]” the reader, which is her acknowledging her arrogance, yet she does not try and hide this fact because she believes she has good reason to be that way. The speaker in the poem shows resilience by using violent verbs with actions that are not harmful, thus demonstrating an untouchable demeanor. Phrases “shoot me” with “words”, “cut me” with “eyes”, and “kill me” with “hatefulness” represent the speakers disregard to what others think of her because, “like air, [she’ll] rise”(“Still” 6). This represents a great amount of strength
What exactly is a leader? Is a leader the line by line definition presented to you in a dictionary? Is it just the person that leads and commands a group or organization? Or is it something more? Something beyond the obvious managing and directing. Personally I believe Ronald Reagan embodies the exact definition of what a leader should be. Reagan once stated “The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things, he is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things.” Being a leader has nothing to do with being the best. In the end, it doesn’t matter whether or not you are the star quarterback or the leading soloist. It doesn’t matter if you are the fastest runner or how high you can throw your the rifle. What I truly think makes a person a leader is having the ability to do something more that far exceeds throwing a football or hitting a perfect tune. What makes a person a leader is having the ability for looking out for your team. It’s about putting the team above yourself. A leader has the ability to look out for each and every team member when they are struggling. They are always on call and ready to help despite the situation at hand. Leadership is just something that can’t be switched on and off. Leadership is something that remains with a person. It consumes the body in which it inhabits presenting it’s owner with the desire to look after the team not only on the field, but off. It allows the holder to truly care about their team because they want the best for it. It gives them the impulse to keep peace in the unity but still push them to amount to their greatest potential. As Ronald Reagan stated, leaders get the people to do the greatest things.
Due to the time period she wrote in, Angelou would be criticized for her ability to write, “without apology,” of the fearful life she lived. However, now that is the reason as to why her work is so highly praised. Yet, critics feel as if Angelou’s work is simply overused and not appreciated for what it truly is. Instead of looking at Angelou as a poet, people look at her as an, “inspirational public speaker,” and can often be found on the front of a, “Hallmark greeting card,” instead of the pages in a textbook. Angelou doesn’t really show this criticism in her work but she does represent the criticism she received as African American woman poet in her time period. She often would discuss how people would misuse her race and treat them like nothing, and, “may trod” them “in the very dirt.” But despite these harsh criticisms of her work, Angelou continued writing of her struggles, and brought to life the hardships she had to face whilst living in this time period, which in the end, become what she was most critically acclaimed for, and the reason that out of the, “huts of history’s shame,” she conquered the fears, not only of her past, but of saying the words she used to be afraid to say.
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
The poem has many quotes that give life to the speaker. Angelou quotes,"You may write me down in history / With your bitter, twisted lies,... But still, like dust, I'll rise," (1-4). This quote made an impact on me, illuminating the discrimination in the media or gossip. It also shows amazing imagery. Angelou writes,"... like dust, I'll rise," (4). To me, this quote creates a picture of a person rising from the dust and standing strong again like nothing happened. All the lies that are being told can mess with one's head. But one has to stand strong and rise up against the hate that is being projected towards them. I feel like this holds a lot of truth.
Remember being a good leader does not happen when a title is handed to us. Being a good leader happens when we strive to be the best person we can be. When we live by our values everyday, and demonstrate them no matter where we are. We become good leaders, not by our choice, but rather by those that we lead. They decided when we become good leaders, they decide when they will follow us, and they decide when they are willing to trust
To be a leader you need to be able to inspire others, get people motivated, and set an example to other people. A leader needs to do all of these because if one of these aspects fails people don’t look at the leader...
