Amphibian Population Decline

The amphibian population has been decreasing for over twenty years now. Amphibians are the most extinct species at around sixty six percent of all the species being endangered. The leading problems for this include “habitat loss, disease, invasive species, overexploitation, and chemical pollution (Olson).” As the air and water temperature increases, the more frogs get affected by global warming causing frogs to mate latter affecting the survival rate of their babies.
Warmer temperatures are also causing ponds and lakes to become shallow, which affects frogs eggs and also affecting frogs survival rates. Humans play a big role in frogs decrease and one of the main reasons is by altering their habitats. Altering habitats removes the homes of many …show more content…

Another big amphibian killer is pesticides. Pesticides have shown to decrease the amphibian population greatley. A study was conducted and has shown to kill one hundred percent of all frogs that got exposed to common pesticides used to spray plants with. Pollution can also affect amphibians, but mainly maile frogs. Male frogs have been tested and have shown to have undeveloped sperm in the testes after exposed to pollution. Undeveloped sperm would lead to not being able to reproduce which would lead to a big decrease of frogs in the area. Out of two hundred and thirty three male frogs tested, about thirteen percent of them have undeveloped sperm.
Effects on other organisms/ecosystems/humans Frogs are needed in the ecosystem for five main reasons, the first on being to play their role in the food chain. Frogs “provide a very efficient transfer of solar energy.” They eat plants for energy which allows their predators to eat them for energy. Frogs are also a good pest control option, they eat insects that may carry diseases and help us get rid of …show more content…

You can educate yourself to know what not to do to help increase the frogs population. For example, help decrease pollution, don't disrupt or destroy habitats, and don't go hunting for frogs. Watch what you throw away, and make sure you dispose of it properly. The public is also asked not to flush medicine down the toilet, because it could end up in a stream at a frogs home. Also support going green, go help plant some trees or try to recycle. There are many different programs that people have created to try and help preserve frogs you could help or donate money to.
Conclusion
So it would make sense for us to try to preserve a species that helps us so much. They have helped us get rid of diseases that would harm the human body through insects. We also use their skin to research and learn from for our own needs to benefit our bodies. Frogs are taken to labs and used as lab rats against new medicine and drugs before it is released to the
