When someone makes fun of someone else by the way they look, they usually are mad at that person and they want their revenge. This is how Hop Frog feels in Edgar Allen Poe’s story “Hop Frog.” The king mistreats Hop Frog and in the end, Hop Frog gets his revenge on the king. The king does not think that Hop Frog is an interesting person because he laughs at him and makes fun of him, but actually he is a very interesting character. Hop Frog is a very interesting character because he is unfortunate of being a fool, he is clever, and he is vengeful in the story “Hop Frog”. To begin with, the first characteristic that describes Hop Frog is that he is unfortunate of being a fool. One way Hop Frog is unfortunate of being a fool is that he is bullied …show more content…
Hop Frog is mad that the king throws his wine in Trippetta’s face, so he sets up his plans for the masquerade. Furthermore, Hop Frog is vengeful because he does not think twice before putting his plan into action even if it means killing the king and his ministers: “The dwarf had scarcely made an end of his brief speech before the work of vengeance was complete” (Poe). Hop Frog does not care if his plan would end up killing the king and his ministers because they mistreated him and Trippetta. Since the king and his ministers were treating them very bad, Hop Frog wanted his revenge. Hop Frog is feeling proud of himself that he killed the king and his ministers. In conclusion, there are many characteristics about Hop Frog, but the three main characteristics that make him an interesting character is that he is unfortunate of being a fool, he is clever, and he is vengeful. Even though Hop Frog is always being made fun of a lot, he is the one who gets the last jest and he is able to get revenge on the king and his ministers. If someone makes fun of someone else because they are not interesting then that person is wrong. Every person has unique characteristics about them, just as Hop Frog has unique characteristics about
In the story by his name, Hop-Frog is not only physically dwarfed by the King but is dwarfed in terms of bodily capabilities, wealth, social standing, and even in numbers as he and Trippetta are but two against the King and his 7 ministers. However, Hop-Frog emerges victorious, as his mental capabilities are seemingly far greater than the Kings. The King is described as having “an especial admiration for breadth in a jest, and would often put up with length, for the sake of it” (Poe, 502). It becomes apparent that the King is not a smart man and his jester is indeed quite the opposite. The fact that Hop-Frog knows of the King’s weaknesses and tailors a perfect plan for vengeance to fit the occasion of the masque ball is a testament to his creativity and most useful utilization of information. In the Purloined Letter, the useful utilization of information, which is by keeping such information hostage, again allows for great power in government. In these two stories we are given the message that information is most valuable and leads to power. In reality, Poe also made good use of information in order to gain a wider subscriptio...
What is the most important element of a good story? Although interesting characters, engaging plot development and didactic story lines certainly embellish the story, one could argue that the setting is the most crucial. Not only does the setting provide a baseline of necessary background information, it can also be used to enhance the story, just like the other elements listed. Edgar Allan Poe certainly takes advantage of this in “Hop Frog”, “The Cask of Amontillado”, and the “Masque of the Red Death”. In each of these stories, gruesome horrors occur, and because of the ingenious way Poe uses and manipulates the setting to his advantage, these stories’ horrors are amplified. In “Hop Frog” and “The Cask of Amontillado”, the main characters
When Dillard said the frog “seemed to collapse” like a “deflating football” she is describing how the frog shriveled up when it was slowly dying. Dillard then explains exactly why the frog died, her diction when explaining the frogs death suggests a homicide but the details of her telling suggest that it is a common occurrence in nature. The innocent child that once walked along the island shore gawking over the “inelegant” frogs, has been transformed into a child with a new understanding for the abysmal circle of life. The main character is notably upset at the end of the essay, the lifeless frog corpse sunk to the bottom of the shallow puddle and she “couldn’t catch [her] breath”. The water bug that killed the frog did nothing wrong and was only following instinct, but still it left the girl altered and with a new understanding for life,
The frog’s back is usually textured with coarse tubercles. Its fingers are thinly webbed while the hind foot is more developed. Large disks exist on the fingers and toes to assist with climbing and sticking to objects (Dickerson, 1969). The male and female Grey Tree Frogs are very similar. They are distinguished by the male having a dark underside of his throat. Also the females ears are smaller then the males (Dickerson, 1969).
Though the role of a king and his rank in the kingdom is known to several people, the King feels the need to boast his power by degrading the others. The king uses his social status to confine to all rules of wisdom and responsibility. His throne seems to give him permission to degrade Hop Frog and Trippetta in every manner. The King is fully aware of Hop-Frogs intolerance to alcohol, yet the King amusingly makes him drink. When the dwarf refuses to fully obey to him, the Kings pride gets the best out of him. The story teller records “At last, without uttering a syllable he pushed her violently from him and threw the contents of the brimming goblet in her face” (Poe 4).To show his power over the dwarf, the King physically harms Trippetta. The King harming Trippetta shows that the king was fully aware of Hop-Frogs weakness. Thus to show his power over the dwarf, the King abuses Trippetta. This reveals that even though the King has every tangible item he wants, the physical and emotional pain of others caused by him is what gives him great joy. Also, through this pain, the King also feels more in power. Though, the King may have the highest of ranks, Hop-Frog steadfast in showing the King just how high really is. Just as the Kings pride was inflicted when Hop-Frog did not drink the entire goblet, Hop-Frogs pride was also hurt when the King made a move on his
Mark Twain’s “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” is a short story with the lesson that what goes around comes around. In this short story, which first appeared in 1856 and his first successful story, Twain uses local customs of the time, dialect, and examples of social status in his story to create a realistic view of the region in which the story takes place. The way that the characters behave is very distinctive. Dialect is also used to give the reader a convincing impression of the setting in “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”. The social status of the main characters in this story also was something that Twain took into account in writing this story. Mark Twain is a realist who concentrates on the customs, dialect, and social status of specific regions of the country.
Piggy’s leadership in the novel is portrayed as knowledgeable but lacks confidence from time to time. Piggy is shown to be a potential leader because of his wisdom. He portrays knowledge from time to time, for example, “We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear us-” (12). This exhibits his knowledge of the art of survival. Even though in the novel, Piggy is shown as the weak link, his wisdom out powers his flaws. Although Piggy has lots of wisdom which makes him a potential leader, he lacks confidence. “Piggy opened his mouth to speak, caught Jack’s eye and shut it again.” (42) This proves that Piggy lacks confidence because he is afraid to express his thoughts. He would rather not contribute to a conversation than be laughed at his ideas. However Piggy does see the importance of having priorities. Specifically, when he says, “How can you expect to be rescued if you don’t put first things first and act proper.” (45) The quote proves that Piggy prioritizes the needs of his pee...
In one of the chapter’s Piggy states that “How can you expect to be rescued if you don’t put first things first and act proper” (Golding 45). It shows he is a thinker and more practical than the others. He is the only one who acts mature while other kids just want to have

Poe uses irony to stress the misfortune of the persona’s situation and create emphatic effect. It is especially effective because the nursery rhyme/sing-song reading of the poem is both ironic due to its serious themes, but also very poignant because it is a reminder of the young age of the persona and Annabel Lee at the time of her death. This childhood trauma and enormous loss being dealt with and talked about through a sort of whimsical, musical poem was almost strange at first, but now seems very
As Zimmerman says, “He assumes, as well, that his audience shares similar emotions” (Zimmerman 42). The narrator says things such as “You should have seen how wisely I proceeded,” and “you would have laughed to see how cunningly I thrust it in,” as if whomever he is speaking to has the same mindset he does (Poe 722). This relates back to his narcissism. He believes that everyone sees the same things he sees and hears the same thing he hears. Hollie Pritchard describes him as “An egocentric who derives pleasure from cruelty,” which explains why he so violently lashes out at something that displeases him
Tripetta is attractive, and the king enjoyed her beauty even if she was an uncivilized person. Tripetta is also never said to have been given a new name or a slave name. The slave owners and his sons would often sleep with the slave women, and if that woman was to have a child that slave owner would treat his slave family with a little more respect (412). Tripetta is in that situation, but once the wine was spilt on her, she had enough of the situation. Hop-Frog may also have a reason to kill the king out of jealousy since he was stealing Tripetta away from him just like the slave owner’s wives would sell or kill her husband’s slave family. Poe studied the cases of those oppressed, and incorporated these cases into his stories to warn people about the rise of the abolitionists (406). These cases can be applied to the storyline within “Hop-Frog” and how his lack of human rights led him to
In the play, there are several characters wanting vengeance like that of Hamlet. Throughout the play, Hamlet, Laertes, and Fortinbras all had a tragic death of a family member which caused their decision for revenge. Consequentially, these revenges caused the demise of two characters and the rise of power of another. The retaliation shown by the Prince of Denmark, as well as Laertes led to the downfall of their government. In the play, Hamlet seeks revenge on his uncle Claudius.
Piggy symbolizes reason and loyalty; he becomes a manifestation of logic and intellect. Piggy attempts to think how 'grown-ups' and, in particular, his 'auntie' would behave in difficult situations.
