The American Revolution, which took place between 1765 and 1783, was the political uprising that caused the separation of the thirteen colonies and the British Empire. It formed an independent nation known as the Unites States of America. Although slavery was still expanding, America began earning its name, “Land of the Free” as it started granting people more rights, which included women’s rights, governmental changes, and land ownership.
The Revolutionary War had a major effect politically on the Colonists, mainly the women. Prior to the war, women lacked all rights; they were expected to cook, clean, and raise families. However, after the revolution, women began to gain more rights. Women gained the power to be able to divorce their husbands if they chose to, something they never could have done before. “The expansion of the public sphere during the era of the Revolution offered women an opportunity to take part in political discussions, and read newspaper¬”(On The Equality of the Sexes (1790), 154). After the revolution women were allowed to join conversations that had to do with politics, they were given the right to educate themselves about the government by reading the daily paper. During American Revolution, some women fought alongside the men while other women helped injured soldiers regain their health. The actions taken by the women caused the ideas about women to change after the war, even The Revolution was accompanied by dramatic changes in the lives of women. Before the Revolution, many women were involved in campaigns to boycott British imports. The right to own property let individual hold their freedom while still being able to keep their slaves, and although to slaves America was not becoming freer, to Americans having the right to own slaves made them believe that American was becoming freer.
After the revolution women gained freedom due to the great impact they had while fighting in the revolution, the free government made the citizens in control in choosing their new leader and the right to possess’ property made it “legal” for individuals to own slaves. Although the expansion of slavery undermines the freedom of America, I believe that America was indeed becoming liberated due to the growth of women’s rights, the development of a free government, and the right to posses their belongings.
