The American Revolution began on April 19, 1775, when British soldiers and American patriots clashed at Lexington, Massachusetts, and at nearby Concord. The war lasted eight years. It ended on September 3, 1783, when Britain signed the Treaty of Paris, which gave independence to the United States. The Battle of Bunker Hill was fought in June of 1775. In the Battle of Bunker Hill the patriots were successful in holding their ground, Redcoats sent three attack waves, the first to were successfully defended by the patriots buy the third was successful in driving the patriots off the hill. The main reason of the patriot's retreat was because of lack of ammunition. Officially the victory was given to the Redcoats but the Patriots had the real victory, for they had proved themselves against professional soldiers and took a great many British soldiers in the battle. In the Battle of Long Island General Howe easily outflanked and defeated Washington's army. Howe could have ended the war at this point but he hesitated. The reason for his hesitation was because he could not make up his mind whether to be a peacemaker or a conqueror. Howe could have ended the war at that time but he allowed the patriots to escape. In the Battle of Saratoga Horatio Gates along with Benedict Arnold defeated John Burgoyne. Arnold and Gates erected formidable defenses immediately South of Stillwater and then forced the British Army to surrender. This defeat revealed the failure of British strategy. This victory also helped convince France that it could safely enter the war on the American side. The Battle of Camden marked the point for the patriots in the American Revolution. The armies of Horatio Gates and George Cornwallis. The patriots received heavy casualties which forced them to withdraw. The out come of this battle was a severe defeat to the patriots. The defeat of the British at the Battle of Yorktown by the patriots and the French signified the end of the war. French ships and patriots trapped Cornwallis and his troops. Cornwallis surrendered and the British were defeated. Then the Treaty of Paris was drawn up because of the defeat of the British. These major battles had a great impact on the events in the war. Many of the outcomes of these battles decided what events would happen next such as the Battle of Saratoga convinced France that it was safe to enter the war.
The American defeat of the British during the Revolutionary War was a direct result of George Washington's incredible leadership and generalship which epitomized the greatness of Sun Tzu's "Art of War"
Many famous people were involved in these battles. Paul Revere was a patriot who is well-known for his famous midnight ride.
.... The Patriots believed in themselves, and they never thought about the idea of losing battles. Two people whom provided this ideology was George Washington and Benedict Arnold. In schools, these days students, are learning about Benedict Arnold as a hero, but back in time the congress did not consider him and respect him as he needed to be respected. There were some logical reasons why he left the Patriots and went to the British side. First of all, he was not respected as much as the other generals. Second of all, he had sacrificed a lot of things for his country and he had fought for the country by risking his life. Lastly, the government was not giving him the credits that he deserved from the victories that he had in the battles. These reasons pushed and forced him to go to the British side. After he went to London, everybody started calling him a traitor.
The British army woke up the next morning and was amazed to see how much hard work took place that night by the American army. Since the British army was surrounded they had no other option but to surrender, and vacate the city.... ... middle of paper ... ... But he always learned from his mistakes.
On June 17, 1775 the Battle of Bunker Hill took place. It is one of the most important colonial victories in the U.S. War for Independence. Fought during the Siege of Boston, it lent considerable encouragement to the revolutionary cause. This battle made both sides realize that this was not going to be a matter decided on by one quick and decisive battle.
The Revolutionary War was a war between the Thirteen Colonies and Great Britain from 1775-1783 during the American Revolution. The American colonists fought the British in hope of freedom and separation from Great Britain. “This was the completion stage of the political American Revolution whereas the colonists had denied the rights of the Parliament of Great Britain in governing them without any representation,” ("American Revolutionary War."). The Revolutionary War consisted of many different bloody battles on American soil. The war resulted in an American victory because of many historical reasons. The factors that contributed to an American victory of the Revolutionary War are British debt, distance between America and Great Britain, war tactics, French involvement, and important battles.
The American Revolution (1775-1783) was a war between England and the colonies which were settled earlier by the English. There were many factors and events that led to the American Revolution. The Revolution was mainly an economic rebellion that was fueled by taxation without representation following the French and Indian War. The English Parliament was more often than not considered cruel and unfair by the colonists. With conflicts over trade, taxes and government representation, the colonies were at a starting line of a revolution that would later transform into the basis of the United States of America.
The American Revolution, also known as the War for Independence began from 1785-1783. The primary cause for the war was because of a conflict between the 13 British colonies and England. The American Revolution resulted in a victory for the 13 British colonies who would declare themselves as the United States of America. However, there are many questions on whether or not the American Revolution was really revolutionary and if there were revolutionary changes being made to society. The American Revolution was not revolutionary because separation between African-Americans and Whites still existed, no change in women's representation or their voices being valued as high as men, and the Indians were promised the “Utmost Good Faith” but the result
The American Revolution could, to some have started when the Americans were given the Proclamation of 1763. As we see they are given boundaries and forbidden to settle onto Indian land. Many more decisions were made in England for the people of America without their opinions. Thereafter, the Sugar Act, the Stamp Act, and the Townshend Duties were set and intended to help finance and sustain the British troops in America. These laws were created without the consent of the people and they were later informed that they were included by Virtual Representation. The colonists lived with these annoying custom duties by evading them through smuggling. Soon after a Declaratory Act was passed reasserting the right of Parliament to legislate 'in all cases whatsoever.'; (Graham 78) The people of America just wanted to separate from the English and soon become interested ...
...riving and driving off the British fleet, Cornwallis was surrounded at all sides. He surrendered, ending the war and later leading to the Treaty of Paris.
On October 9, 1781, General George Washington surrounded General Lord Charles Cornwallis at the Virginia port city of Yorktown with 8,500 American soldiers and around 10,000 French soldiers. The bruised up British army contained only around 8,000 soldiers. The Siege of Yorktown lasted eight days, and Cornwallis had to surrender to American forces. The British loss crushed their southern army and forced them to give up on the war. The surrender of Yorktown could easily be one of the greatest moments in American history. Not only did the surrender signal the end of the war, but it also signaled that independence had been won by the colonies. No longer would the colonies have to answer to Great Britain and the tyrants that ruled it.
The American Revolution: the war for our independence. This revolution opened the door to our liberty, freedom, and basically what America is now. Most Americans have heard the stories of famous battles, important people (George Washington for instance), and everything in between. However, this was only for our side of the American Revolution and a small fraction of people have been told of Britain’s campaign of the revolution. The only thing people have been told was the Britain lost the war. What of Britain’s triumphs, strategies, and everything that happened in the span of a few years? Not many people know it, but the British struck a major blow against the Patriots in the last few years of the war. Even though the United States won the American Revolution, Britain struck a major blow against the colonists when the British successfully and brutally took the town of Charleston, South Carolina.
When news of Burgoyne's surrender reached France, King Louis XVI began negotiations with the Americans, particularly Ben Franklin, that resulted in a military alliance between the two nations hence bring France into the war making it on a greater stage. Britain was then forced to defend their colonial holdings in the West Indies and Europe against the French, taking up valuable resources and soldiers that could be used to fight the Americans. France was eager to help the Americans, especially since they lost to the British in the Seven Years War. Before the Battle of Saratoga, France didn't fully help the Americans and were skeptical of their ability to win the war. However, after they won the Battles of Saratoga, France realized that the Americans had a chance and began full aid for the Americans sending soldiers, loans, ships, weapons, and supplies. Furthermore, the Battle of Saratoga was the turning point in the war since it bought France, Holland Spain, Sweden, Denmark, and Russia into the war creating an alliance that would eventually end the war (Creasy). The geographical location of Saratoga made it the last line of defense against the conquering of New York which, because of its central location, would isolate the other states. This crucial battle not only saved New York, but also inspired the intervention of multiple European nations including the powerhouse France. Because this alliance made American independence and British defeat possible, the battle that took place in Saratoga, NY was the most important battle of the entire
In the history of the American Revolution, the Battle of Long Island (sometimes called the Battle of Brooklyn) in August 1776 is largely glossed over. It was, unfortunately, the first in a series of military defeats for George Washington and the Continental Army, and the eventual outcome of the war predisposes many to focus on the victories, Bunker Hill, Trenton, and Yorktown, which provide a better frame of the narrative. Even the hardships at Valley Forge serve as an indicator of the indomitable American spirit, as opposed to the disorganized chaos of American troops fleeing in the face of the British advance. However, the Battle of Long Island was not only the largest battle of the entire war but served as a crucible of Washington’s leadership, in that he oversaw a massive evacuation that saved his army from destruction, setting the stage for the inevitable victory that would occur five years later.
The American Revolution began as a conflict over political and social change, but soon developed into a dispute over personal rights and political liberty. A decade of conflicts between the British government and the Americans, starting with the Stamp Act in 1765 that eventually led to war in 1775, along with The Declaration of Independence in 1776. Americans united as one and knew that they wanted to be an independent country, have their own laws, rights, and not be a colony of the Great Britain. They fought hard for their independence and people lost their lives in the process of it, but in the end they succeeded. Never give up, keep fighting till the mission is accomplished, just like the Americans did when they were fighting for their independence.
