Pranish Gurung Mr. J Lam ENG2D 15 June 2023 American Street On American streets, Fabiola Toussaint’s immigrant journey unfolds before us as she struggles with love, loss, and the difficulty of establishing a home in a place with infinite possibilities. American Street follows the story of a Haitian immigrant who moves to Detroit, but in the process of moving, her mother gets detained. Fabiola must now adapt to her new life in America without her mother, while trying to find a way to reunite. The author addresses a variety of themes in the story, such as identity, family separation and racial conflicts, however, immigration is the main theme explored in the book. Ezili has made all of me like honey—sweet, sticky, and oozing under Kasim’s hold. But Ezili-Danto has lit a fire inside of me—with rage in my heart and a dagger in my hand, I want nothing more than to slice away this sore named Dray, so I can free Donna and get my mother back.” (Zoboi 187). Fabiola is expressing her inner conflict and her desire to act, so she can remove Dray from Donna’s life. She also considers herself as two sides of the same coin, influenced by two different law’s (spirits). The phrase, “two sides of the same coin”, implies that Fabiola recognizes her different personality traits, which are affected by both the spirits. Despite being pulled in multiple ways, she preserves her strength and resilience. Additionally, this reflects Fabiola’s resilience as an immigrant to overcome obstacles to protect her cousin and try to find a way to reunite with her mother.
