Timeline
1743- In 1743 Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson formed the American Philosophical Society. Although the ideas that were brought through by the American Philosophical Society went against the religious views that were portrayed in the time period, it helped build the original teachings that we use today in philosophy, science, and human reason.
1779- Thomas Jefferson implements a two- track educational system that brings different regulations for the government to uphold with regards to “the laboring and the learned.” The regulations that this largely effected were ones that required to government to allow every citizen the right to gain an education. It was one of the first and largest pushes towards getting a free education

1900- The association of American Universities was founded in this year. This association made sure that the United States educational system stayed on par at minimum with its European counterpart. The goal of this was to create an educational system that was largely the best in the world.
1916- The Bureau of Educational Experiments is founded in New York City. The founder Lucy Sprague Mitchell founded the Bureau with the purpose of studying how children are affected in the developmental and learning stages. This founding set the concrete for a lot of the teachings that are used today in the early stages of learning.
1965- The Higher Education Act was first implemented to allow for a higher funding to go to schools to improve the qualities of the literature and materials used for learning. Another large part of the Higher Education Act was to increase federal aid to those that are looking for college degrees. It opened up many scholarship opportunities, enabled the ability to produce student loans, and also established the National Teachers

The American Philosophical Society created a new way for us to teach Science, Philosophy, and human reason. Not only did it create the new way for us to teach these subjects but for the implementation of science into the education system it was the first. Thomas Jefferson then continued to work for a better tomorrow by implementing the two-track educational system in 1779. After the two-track educational system was put into place it largely challenge the way that the government was forced to deal with the issues of literacy in the United States. It created the notion that every person living within the United States has the right to earn an education. It was one of the first major pushes towards giving an equal and free education to all citizens. In 1837, Mary Lyon made a large footstep for all women across the United States. She founded the first college that allowed for women to receive a college degree. The initial class of 80 female students was the very first group of non-privileged females to have the opportunity to better themselves with a higher form of education. Lucy Stone was born in West Brookfield, Massachusetts on August 13, 1818. Her parents, Francis Stone and Hannah Matthews, were abolitionists and Congregationalists. Stone retained their anti-slavery opinions but rejected the Congregationalist Church after it criticized abolitionists. Along with her anti-slavery attitude, Lucy Stone also pursued a higher education. She completed local schools at the age of sixteen and saved money until she could attend a term at Mount Holyoke Seminary five years later. In 1843, Stone enrolled at the Oberlin Collegiate Institute (later Oberlin College). With her graduation in 1847, she became the first Massachusetts woman to earn a bachelor’s degree. However, Lucy Stone was not done expressing her abolitionist and feminist beliefs to the public (anb.org).
Thomas Jefferson was a man who believed that all American citizens need to be educated so that they may exercise their rights. He saw public education as essential to a democracy. One proposal he made for public education would guarantee that all children could attend public schools for three years. However, much like other early school reforms, this proposal received much rejection and was never brought into being. Despite this rejection, Jefferson still believed that America needed public education. Eventually, he opened the University of Virginia. One of the greatest conflicts in the history of the United State of America, the Revolutionary War, was started when the colonies of North America declared themselves independent from British rule. A group of men known as the Founding Fathers, which included George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John and Samuel Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and others, formed the Continental Congress to rule their new nation. They chose Thomas Jefferson to write the Declaration of Independence, which they would send to King George III to make their independence official. Jefferson knew that he needed to use strong language to make a solid agrument against British rule in the colonies and to convince the colonists that independence was the only choice to maintain their freedom as human beings. The powerful use of parallelism, ethos, pathos, and logos helpd Thomas Jefferson to convey his idea that all men are created equal with unalienable rights and that it is the duty of the government to protect those rights.

After World War II, the nation was focused on the promotion of democracy throughout the world. In 1946, President Harry Truman mandated a commission on higher education. The first federal commission on higher education in US history, submitted a report a year later and argued two fundamentals for higher education: equal opportunity and to educate the citizens. Philo Hutcheson (2011), an Associate Professor of Educational Policy Studies at Georgia State University, explained the principles as: first, to promote “equal opportunity as a social economic good” (p. 45) and the latter to educate individuals so they can “make wise choices, especially in the face of totalitarian threats” (p. 45) after the war.
The Founding Fathers of the United States relied heavily on many of the principles taught by John Locke. Many of the principles of Locke’s Second Treatise of Government may easily be discovered in the Declaration of Independence with some minor differences in wording and order. Many of the ideas of the proper role of government, as found in the Constitution of the United States, may be discovered in the study of Locke. A college education is something that women take for granted today, but in the 1800’s it was an extremely rare thing to see a woman in college. During the mid 1800’s, schools like Oberlin and Elmira College began to accept women. Stone’s father did a wonderful thing (by 19th century standards) in loaning her the money to pay for her college education. Stone was the first woman to get a college education in Massachusetts, graduating from Oberlin College in 1843. Her first major protest was at the time of her graduation. Stone was asked to write a commencement speech for her class. But she refused, because someone else would have had to read her speech. Women were not allowed, even at Oberlin, to give a public address.

Education has always been in existence in one form or another. As each child is born into this world regardless of who or where they are born, life lessons immediately begin. He/she will learn to crawl, walk, and talk by the example and encouragement of others. Although these lessons are basic in the beginning they evolve as the child grows. However, the core learning method of a child does not change. Learning from others, they will watch, listen, and then act for themselves. Thomas Jefferson believed that an education would lead men and women to the ability to be self-governed and become positive contributors to society (Mondale & Patton, 2001). Today, we can see how true this is by the examples of others. Those that are given the opportunity for education are more likely to find jobs and develop skills that not only improve a community, but influence the economic growth of their nation (Ravitch, Cortese, West, Carmichael, Andere, & Munson, 2009, p. 13). On the other hand, if an education is not provided to individuals, they can become a hindrance to that nation’s growth.
In 1965, Congress passed The Elementary and Secondary Education Act emphasizing again, equal access to education and establishes high standards and accountability. The law authorizes federally funded education programs that are administered by the states. In 2002, Congress amended The Elementary and Secondary Education Act and reauthorized it as the No Child Left Behind Act 2001. (Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA))

The relationship between college and university are influential in our society. To have an educated society in the United States brings a safe and peaceful environment to live in. Society is defined as "a group of people with a common culture or a way of life. A group of people who unite to share a common interest" (Holt, Rinehart and Winston 678). An educated society also avoids social problems such as poverty, gangs, drugs and health related sickness. Most of all, having an educated society helps our country’s economy. For example, a citizen that acquires a college degree earns respect and can get a good job that pays well.
