The United States of America is an ever evolving super power. One of the evolving parts is foreign policy. Foreign policy is “a nation’s external goals and the techniques and strategies used to achieve them” (Bardes et al. 712). Every country needs a foreign policy to survive in today's world and every country's foreign policy is always changing. This could be due to both internal and external affairs. Countries will start wars with each other and they might end up becoming more closed of because they no longer trust other countries. A bad trade deal or even a good trade deal could negatively affect a countries foreign policy. Isolationism is when a country stays out of foreign affairs and alliances (Bardes et al. 637). This is what the United States foreign policy was for most of the 1800s (Bardes et al. 637). The Monroe Doctrine helped to cement this idea of isolationism in the United States. The Monroe Doctrine was a statement made by president James monroe in 1823 and it outlined three principles (Bardes et al. 637). The first principle was that “European nations should not establish new colonies in the Western Hemisphere” (Bardes et al. 636). The second was “European nations should not intervene in the affairs of independent nations of the Western Hemisphere” (Bardes et al. 637) The third was “the United States would not interfere in the affairs of European nations” (Bardes et al. 637). We decide that as long European countries stay out of our affairs and the affairs of other nations close to us, we will stay out of theirs. President Monroe even stated “We could not view any interposition for the purpose of oppressing [the nations of Latin America], or controlling in any other manner their destiny, by any European power in any other light than as the manifestation of an unfriendly disposition toward the United States.” (WEBSITE 1). The United States didn't want to completely cut themselves off from other nations. We traded peacefully with China a lot in mid 1800s but towards the end of the 1800s other countries such as The British, French Germans, and Japanese threatened the peaceful trading (NORMAL GOV BOOK). These nations wanted exclusive trading rights to different parts of the Chinese coast (NORMAL GOV BOOK). America suggested the Open Door Policy for trade in China (NORMAL GOV BOOK).
