Baptism of Pocahontas by John Gadsby Chapman This image was commissioned in 1837 and placed in 1839. It commemorates a particular ceremony in either 1613 or 1614 which occurred in Jamestown, Virgia. In this ceremony, Pocahontas who was a daughter to chief Powhatan, a very influential Algonkian, was baptized in the Anglican Church and subsequently named Rebecca. Considered to be the first native convert to Christianity, Pocahontas was married to John Rolfe. Their marriage aided in forging very peaceful relations between her tribe, tidewater, and the colonialists.

It was hung in the U.S Capitol in the same year; 1843. Weir decided to paint this picture after he missed on the mayflower compact which was done by another artist; Samuel F. B. Morse. The painting was made from the event of the Deft’s Haven. The artist depicted the event from Nathaniel Morton's New-England's Memorial of 1669. It is also claimed that he possibly made the painting from Cotton Mather's Magnalia Christi Americana. Born in New York, the artist was largely a self taught artist. Specifically, he served in the Congress from 1774-1781. In the Congress, he signed for the declaration of independence. As such, he is referred to as the Father of the American Revolution. Additionally, he also served as a member of the Massachusetts General Court from 1765 to 1775. He led in opposing several acts of law which include Sugar Act in 1764, the Stamp Act of 1765, and the Townshend Acts of 1767.
This is a good leader to represent my statute because of a variety of reasons. My statute represents a very strong man who seems to be very hard-working. Similarly, Adams was a very strong man who fought for independence. Standing on top of a constructed wall means that Adams was always on top of things.
