This book is a study of the personal tales of many single mothers, with intentions to understand why single mothers from poor urban neighborhoods are increasingly having children out of wedlock at a young age and without promise of marrying their fathers. The authors chose to research their study in Philadelphia’s eight most devastated neighborhoods, where oppression and danger are high and substantial job opportunities are rare. They provide an excellent education against the myth that poor young urban women are having children due to a lack of education on birth control or because they intend to work the welfare system. Instead, having children is their best and perhaps only means of obtaining the purpose, validation and companionship that is otherwise difficult to find in the areas in which they live. For many of them, their child is the biggest promise they have to a better future. They also believe that though their life may not have been what they want, they want their child to have more and better opportunities and make it their life’s work to provide that.
In this millennial it is very common to see a divided family. People get married, discover their differences and often divorce. Yet, with divorce comes many decisions and often a messy outcome. While this may take a toll on a family, remarriage is another issue of it’s own. “Step parents” is what they call them; although no one is quit sure what the word “step” truly insinuates. It isn’t until you read “Stepdaughters” by Max Apple that you catch a glimpse of the interior complications and obstacles, divorced families often face. The author seamlessly paints the very common mother and teenage daughter tension many families endure. Yet, the story is uniquely told by “stepfather number three trying to stay on the sideline” (132). The author focuses on a few issues that a family (divorced or not) may face: overbearing control, lack of trust, and unwanted change. He does this, by use of temporal setting – the dreaded teenage years – and situation – the exhausted disagreement between the mother and daughter.

Justine’s mother is also afraid that her family might blame her for going ahead with the heart surgery if anything bad were to happen to Justine in the hospital during the surgery. She bore her eldest child at age fourteen and six different men fathered her children. The primary diagnosis for Amanda Anderson is separation anxiety disorder (SAD) with a co-morbidity of school phobia. Separation anxiety disorder is commonly the precursor to school phobia, which is “one of the two most common anxiety disorders to occur during childhood, and is found in about 4% to 10% of all children” (Mash & Wolfe, 2010, p. 198). Amanda is a seven-year-old girl and her anxiety significantly affects her social life. Based on the case study, Amanda’s father informs the therapist that Amanda is extremely dependent on her mother and she is unenthusiastic when separated from her mother. Amanda was sitting on her mother’s lap when the therapist walked in the room to take Amanda in her office for an interview (Morgan, 1999, p. 1).
For many years, children growing up in a single parent family have been viewed as different. Being raised by only one parent seems impossible to many yet over the decades it has become more prevalent. In today’s society many children have grown up to become emotionally stable and successful whether they had one or two parents to show them the rocky path that life bestows upon all human beings. Unequal Childhoods explores the lives of children of different races and social classes in order to support Annette Lareau’s thesis that parenting styles are shaped by a child’s social class, and a child’s life chances will depend on the parenting style with which they are raised. These life chances can be viewed as benefits, which “accrue to middle-class children [and] can be significant, but they are often invisible to them and to others” (Lareau, 2011: 13). Life chances are viewed differently for the working or lower class because their strategies are viewed as “unhelpful or even harmful to children’s life chances” (Lareau, 2011: 13). Lareau’s thesis also includes the idea that children will then recreate their class background due to the life chances that their parenting style allowed them to have.
In their books, Little Women and So Far From God, Louisa May Alcott and Ana Castillo make contrasting arguments on the impactions a missing father and husband figure can have in a woman’s life. Alcott argues that a missing father figure provides a sense of pride and thus makes daughters strive to be better people and have high standards for future partners. However, Castillo argues that missing a male head of household has negative impact that in part causes sexual promiscuity, and a poor sense of judgment in men as future partners. While Alcott uses a missing father role to provide a sense of strength and a moral compass, Castillo does nearly the opposite and showcases the negative impacts that a missing father can create.
With almost half of all marriages ending in divorce, the trend of a father absence in his daughter’s life appears to have risen. The effects of divorce seem to hit the children the hardest, particularly the daughters. Girls and young women who have an unstable father figure seem prone to low-self esteem, unplanned pregnancy, dropping out of high school and college. As these young women become adults, they are more likely to experience divorce and poverty, and more likely to engage in promiscuity.
Naturally, caring parents are worried by all this. Their worry showed in a 2005 national poll in which 76% of parents said that raising children was “a lot harder” than it was when they were growing up (“ A Lot Easier Said”). But just as most popular TV shows don’t give a realistic view of American teens, these frightening books and statistic do not provide a complete picture of what’s going on in families today. The fact is that not all teens and families are lost and without values. While they struggle with problems in our culture like everyone else, successful families are doing what they’ve always done: finding ways to protect and nurture their children. They are fighting the battle for their families in three ways: by fighting against the loss of quality family time, by fighting against the loss of community, and by fighting against the influence of the media.
