Who is Amber Rose? Amber Levonchuck, formerly known as Amber Rose, was born on October 21, 1983. Her parents were of Irish and Italian descent and she was raised in South Philadelphia. Due to the divorce of her parents she took part in stripping to provide for her family. Growing up, after stripping, she began to start taking interest in modeling. In 2008, she was casted in Young Jeezy’s video and was eventually noticed by Kanye West. This created a spark in her career. Rose walked the runway at New York Fashion week and have been in multiple music videos. This soon led to the signing of a modeling contract with Ford Models. Years later Amber Rose had much more exposure to the fame and her communication skills had evolved. She began to start her own brand by posting Instagram pictures in provocative clothing and even advertised others’ clothing. Amber Rose started her own cosmetic line and began to start dating Kanye West. Soon after their breakup after two years, she dated Wiz Khalifa. These relationships …show more content…
eventually ended due to the fact that she had been posed as a “slut” by the media. Amber Rose openly talked about her relationship with men and she wasn’t afraid to show her sexual side. What is a slut? Amber Rose had been named a “slut” because of her past. The definition of a slut is, “a woman who has many casual sexual partners”, or “a woman with low standards of cleanliness.” Amber Rose had been subjected to this word because of her casual way of presenting the fact that she likes having sex. On an interview Kanye West, Amber Rose’s ex, was asked about how did Kim get comfortable with him and he responded with, “It's very hard for a woman to want to be with someone that's with Amber Rose...I had to take 30 showers before I got with Kim.” This comment made her feel like slut shaming isn’t fair to anybody who is comfortable with their bodies. Although this comment was horrific, it was not the first time someone had been slut shamed. Slut shaming is, “an act of making a person, especially a woman, feel guilty or inferior over certain sexual behaviors, circumstances or desires that are different than the norm.” A police officer in Toronto suggested to college females that if they did not want to be raped they should not dress provocatively. This was the original act that caused the movement of the SlutWalk. After Amber Rose heard this news she immediately decided to act because she had been slut shamed before and felt like the empowerment of females was important. She started her personal “#SlutWalk” hashtag to shed more light on the matter of slut shaming. Rose then eventually started to become more active. She created her own SlutWalk on October 3, 2015, in Los Angeles. She had the participants dress anyway they wanted to and as provocatively as they felt comfortable with. This raised a lot of questions about the morals and ethics of these young women. Empowering or Degrading? The Slut Walk was a portrayal of women showcasing their bodies to signify that just because they dress indecently that does not give a guy the consent to have sex with them. There were women going topless and even had sayings painted on their naked skin like “still not asking for it”, and “my P***Y, my CHOICE”. Rose even participated by wearing a lace dress and sheer tights exposing explicit areas of her body. The point they were trying to make was that SlutWalks “target what activists say are the double standards and victim-blaming that underline a pervasive culture of sexual violence.” I strongly believe that Amber Rose made her point with the SlutWalks.
I feel as though she tugged the hearts of the females by speaking to them on a personal level. She began the SlutWalks by talking and sharing her experiences with her being called names and how she was tricked when she was 14 by a group of guys who made it seem like she was giving oral sex while playing “ 7 Minutes in Heaven”. She knew that many people who were in the walks had been through some type of slut shaming. Amber Rose even cried and acknowledged those who slut shamed her to show that she could overcome any situation because words don’t make or break her. She is actually comfortable about herself and planned to keep it that way. Also, she had guest appearances such as Nick Cannon who supported her walk. This showed credibility because Nick Cannon was a very strong figure in the media field. He had his own label, he was casted in many movies, and even started his own record
company. Many participants seemed to agree with her because she was actually being honest and true with herself. Even one participant said that, “Rose is really comfortable in who she is; she’s not ashamed of her past.” Although many women supported this idea, some weren’t very fond of how she went about it. In the Essence interview with Dana Johnson and ESSENCE Editor Cori Murray, they had a portion of the show called “Slayed or Shade”. They were asked their opinion on Amber Rose’s SlutWalk. Two of the hosts said that they disagreed because of the way the message was sent. They felt as if it she wasn’t being genuine because most of the women who were out there didn’t seem like they were doing it for the right cause. Also, they mentioned that she might have done it as a publicity stunt to talk raise attention to her next book, “How to be a Bad Bitch.” Others also thought that it was a little skeptical for her to support such a sensitive topic in that way. An article in the State Press argued that her SlutWalk seemed to cause controversial issues and gave very little benefit to the actual cause itself. They even stated that, “Rose and many of her followers took this as an opportunity to walk nearly — or completely — naked down the streets of Los Angeles. Some of those in attendance are victims and were searching for an outlet for their voices, but they turned out to be the minority.” Conclusion In conclusion Amber Rose tried to successfully bring awareness to slut shaming. Her SlutWalk was intended to show those that calling people names because of their strong sense of sexuality was wrong. She felt like she needed to assess the situation and share her own story about slut shaming. I do agree that she successfully managed to get her point across although others did not see it that way. I even realized that even if she did it as a publicity stunt she was still successful. She brought attention to herself and the SlutWalk even gave her leeway to being asked to do multiple interviews about it. Rose had spread awareness by being an advocate for a good cause and presented herself in a way that others had never seen her before.

This showcased white women's passive indifference to racism in America. Her history of hunting down Black people to return home is a reflection of Black men being fetishized in modern society. She sees black people as just items, she was basically shopping for a physically-enhanced slave. Even Though, in the beginning of the movie she seems to defend her boyfriend from first the cop, and her parents second. It later on discovered that it was all an act that she was a part in. It’s hard to tell if she actually enjoys being intimate and sexual with black men or just following the orders of her family.
