What Community Means to Me Community, to me, is about more than just where you live, and the things that surround you. It is a connection of people who have shared values, who support each other, and is where you form different connections. Growing up in Alpena has shaped my understanding of what a community is, because of many different experiences. Whether it was the other children in my neighborhood that I played with, the teachers that poured everything into my education, or the infinite amount of opportunities given to me by other community members in hopes of helping me succeed. When everyone works together to create a change in their environment, no matter how small, it brings them together and allows them to see that everyone wants the same thing for others, themselves and their families. This has been demonstrated to me by those in my community who have started petitions for school funding, provided/donated items to schools and local emergency shelters, and have helped feed families in need. Additionally, there is no community if those in it do not support each other. Having individuals, or groups/organizations that have the resources or even just a kind word to offer support to someone who is having a difficult time, or being able to support others achievements, to me, is one of the most important aspects of a community. I truly believe that, again, even just a kind word can make the biggest difference in someone's life. This has also been demonstrated to me by different organizations/groups in my community such as Friends Together, the Sheriffs Victim Services unit, and even the schools/community members coming together to show support for outstanding academic students, and athletes.
