This essay is discussing the different types of conflict in the different stories that we’ve read in the class. Types of conflict include: Person vs Self, Person vs Person, and Person vs Nature. I am discussing the characters from two different stories, Alma, in “The Time of the Wolves” and Shackleton in “Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World”. Saying what they faced, how they dealt with it, and why they could get through it. Person vs Self. Alma, in the story “The Time of the Wolves” faces this conflict in that she does what always needs to be done, she is caring and is always looking out for others no matter who they are. The fear that she had when facing the wolves was actually helping her fight them. “The fear, she knew now, …show more content…

In “The Time of the Wolves” Sarah thought Alma was having an affair with her husband, which of course wasn’t true. Sarah got the idea stuck in her head because Alma always talked to her husband and helped their family any way she could. Sarah was very sick and distraught, and obviously wasn’t thinking clearly. Sarah just kept getting sicker and sicker and more furious as the night went on. Eventually, while Alma was trying to fight off the wolves, Sarah decided that she wanted to fight Alma. Sarah started jumping on Alma, all the while the wolves were getting into the house. Alma knew that Sarah was being irrational, and that she was disoriented from the sickness. Alma did what she needed to do so she could protect both of them from the wolves. This action on Alma’s part says that she can multitask in very, very difficult situations, and doesn’t hold a grudge based on one action. She knew that it wasn’t her own fault that Sarah was sick, it wasn’t her fault that Sarah had made up a dumb idea in her head and was accusing her. Alma dealt with the attack and moved on to the wolves so she could save both their lives. The conflict in “Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World” includes McNeish and Shackleton in that McNeish thinks that he is more fit to lead the crew than Shackleton. McNeish freaks out and tries to get the crew against Shackleton. Shackleton being the reasonable guy he is, does not yell, does not fight back, but just takes it. He knew that …show more content…

In “The Time of the Wolves” There was a sudden blizzard which made travel not possible. The blizzard was so bad the horses were freaking out, so Alma dealt with them to calm them down. Since she was at Sarah’s house at the time, there was nothing else to do but stay where she was. She did what she could do make everyone and everything comfortable during the storm, and tried to look at everything in a calm and realistic way. Another thing that would be person vs nature is obviously the wolves. With everything going on, Alma stayed relatively calm and practical. The wolves started crawling through the broken window, and even though she knew she wasn’t a great shot, she did it anyway because that’s all she could do. She shot wolf after wolf and wouldn’t give up. This says alot about Alma’s character, she does what needs to be done no matter the circumstances. She does what she sees fit and right. She could have left Sarah to fend for herself, but she stuck up for Sarah even though Sarah did just try to kill her. Alma was a realistic, practical, caring woman. Person vs. Nature in “Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World” is basically the main conflict since they are in Antarctica with no communication for help, or ship. First the ship was crushed in the ice, so they had to travel across Antarctica. Everything from seal attacks to ice storms was thrown their way, but they persisted onward. Even when things were at their worst they looked towards Shackleton
