After reading the novel As I Lay Dying, I was able to gather some first impressions about Jewel Bundren. One of these impressions is that Jewel Bundren is aware that Anse Bundren is not his father,. One reason why this is evident is because when Jewel half brother, Darl, is questioning him about who his father is, Jewel doesn’t answer, meaning he might know that he isn’t related to Anse. Another reason this is evident is due to the way Jewel acts when he is talking to Anse, as he is continuously disrespectful to him. Even though it’s shown Jewel is aware that Anse is not his father, there is no indication in the novel that he is aware that Whitfield is really his father. Another first impression I was able to gather about Jewel

In Act 1, Scene 1 of the Crucible, Arthur Miller’s theme is evident when Abigail worryingly puts all the blame on tituba because she knows that Tituba’s race puts her at a disadvantage, thus leading to tituba lying for her own safety. Passionately trying to seek answers Parris threateningly screams, “ You will confess yourself or I will take you out and whip you to your death, Tituba!”(Miller 24) Tituba fearfully replies, “ No--no, don’t hang Tituba. I tell him I don’t desire to work for him, sir.” (24). In the quote, Parris didn’t like that tituba didn’t tell him she dealt with the devil so he threatened to kill her. Historically whipping was a method to abuse or punish slaves for misbehaving. After the beatings if still alive the slaves will suffer mental and physical distress. This image of a brutal death
Our society today has an unspoken rule that nobody can be trusted. Different views cause people to drift further and further apart, therefore becoming “strangers”. Flannery O’Connor addresses this logic in her story “A Good Man is Hard to Find”. The Misfit is at first considered to be a stranger by the characters and the readers, however it is then made clear that both know him all to well. The Misfit symbolizes the modern man that is vulnerable and indecisive. The Misfit’s physical characteristics, motivation to be a criminal, and lasting impact he leaves on the grandmother all illustrate the modern man.

...ewer is interested in; Bruce Wayne is an after thought. But with a movie, the viewer is forced to see the Bruce Wayne character and on a sub-conscious level is forced to connect that character with the traits one already has of the actor from previous experience, which reduces the mystery of the Batman character.

The most important of Ronald Knox’s “10 Commandments of Detective Fiction” is the first commandment: “The criminal must be someone mentioned in the early part of the story, but must not be anyone whose thoughts the reader has been allowed to follow.” Rendell and Christie somewhat abide by Knox’s first commandment, and introduce the criminal at the beginning of their respective novels. However, both novelists defy Knox’s commandment by allowing the reader access to the guilty criminal’s mind. While Christie and Rendell allow access to the minds of the criminals in two different ways, their access allows the reader insight to the minds of these criminals and allows them to view the events that have taken place from the criminal’s perspective, and understand the reasons why each criminal committed their crimes. This provides an interesting and exciting twist to the novel that would not be present if Christie and Rendell had conformed to Knox’s first commandment.
