Allie's Mitt , Catcher In The Rye.
Allie's mitt was a very important symbol in Catcher In The Rye, the mitt had poems written all over it. Allie was Holden's little brother, he got leukemia and died in Maine. Allie's mitt symbolizes the innocence that Holden yearns for , Allie's innocence was preserved in the mitt. Allie died when he was young, he was still innocent. By dying young Allie stayed out of the phony, adult world. In some ways Holden wants to be Allie. Holden wanted to preserve his own innocence but he could not. A baseball mitt is a common part of childhood, so it has the "power" to preserve innocence. The most interesting part about Allie's mitt are the poems, a grown up would not be writing poems and reading them during the game, he would be competitive, and all he would want is to win. Allie was to innocent he did not care about winning he just wanted to play baseball.

“I know it’s only his body and all that’s in the cemetery,and his soul’s in Heaven and all that crap, but i couldn't stand it anyway.” the quote is self explanatory in the fact that he outright states that he knows that Allie is dead but still somewhat cannot truly accept it. The fact that- -Holden outright says this tells a lot about his character in the fact that he can be too outright at times .
When Allie was alive, his company comforts Holden because of how friendly and happy he was around him. When he dies, Holden does not know how to react, and could not hurt a particular person, so he hurt himself: ”I slept in the garage the night he died, and I broke all the goddam windows with my fist, just for the hell of it” (39). Because he was so hurt by the death of his brother, Holden releases his frustration physically rather than verbally. Also, he talks to Allie in order to feel less depressive after the prostitute, Sunny, leaves. Holden has not yet found a resolution to comfort him because he is so familiar with telling Allie how he feels.

Allie, Holden's young brother who died several years earlier, was a major symbol throughout the story. When Holden remembers incidents from his past involving Allie, his attitude changes, such as when he writes the composition about Allie's baseball glove or when Holden broke his hand after punching all of the windows after Allie died. "I slept in the garage the night he died, and I broke all the goddam windows with my fist, just for the hell of it". (39) He feels that Allie was one of the few people who were not phony in a world full of phonies. More importantly, Allie represents the innocence and childhood that Holden strives to find throughout his three-day journey. In Holden's opinion, Allie represents the purity that Holden looks for in the world. Holden admits that he admires Allie more than he admires Jesus, and even prays to Allie at one point, rather than Jesus. Allie is Holden's role model, whom he judges the rest of the world according to. When Allie dies, it creates turbulence in Holden's life.

The Catcher in the Rye Holden often finds himself questioning his faith and pondering why an innocent adolescent like his brother Allie has to die. By the close of the novel Holden learns to accept not only death but life as well. There are several instances within J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye in which Holden expresses his misapprehension of death. In Chapter 5, on page 38 Holden provides a long excursus on Allie, specifying the particulars of his life and death.
For instance, when Holden first mentions him in the book, he recalls that Allie “never got mad at anybody...had very red hair...[and] was left-handed,” but he “got leukemia and died when [they] were up in Maine, on July 18, 1946” (Salinger, 38). Even four years after his brother’s death, Holden still vividly remembers the exact date, location, and cause of Allie’s death because his passing obviously holds great importance and significance to him. Also, Holden even recalls the best aspect of his personality, his patience, and his prominent physical trait, his bright hair. From his thorough remembrance of Allie, the narrator clearly treasures his brother, and he also carries with him a memento of his sibling wherever he goes, a baseball mitt. Holden says that his “brother Allie had this left -handed fielder’s mitt..that had poems written all over...in green ink. I have found that mindfulness has a calming effect on my emotions. Sometimes it is difficult for me to practice mindfulness when I am feeling a significant amount of stress or anxiety, but practicing it every day I feel has helped to regulate my emotions. I have been able to separate myself from my thoughts by doing mindfulness that helps me to identify and label thoughts as simply thoughts that come and go. I have also been more present in the current moment and appreciated what was going on around me. I had increased awareness of the colors, shapes, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures.
