This incredible work of art is the Allegory of Spring, also known as Primavera, created by the Italian Renaissance painter, Sandro Botticelli. This piece’s medium was on a Tempera on panel and was created in the late 1470’s to early 1480’s. The location of this Uffizi Gallery, in Florence, and the dimensions are about 80 inches by 124 inches. This painting was a wedding gift for Lorenzo de’ Medici and his wife, they hung this stunning piece above their bed, in their home. In this piece of work, they are standing in Orange Grove, which the Medici family adopted for their family symbol. This intrigue painting contains 6 female figures, cupid, along with 2 males. The idolized women in the center goes by the name of Venus, and above her, is cupid.
The painting I chose today is called ‘Fidelia and Speranza’, part of Putnam collection, by Benjamin West and was painted in 1776. The Fidelia and Speranza painting is Oil on canvas painting. ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬The current location of this painting is in the Timken Museum in San Diego, California. Benjamin West worked mainly in London, Roma, and Philadelphia. Benjamin was an American- British painter and was born in October 1738 and died in March of 1820; born in Pennsylvania but lived his entire life in England from the year of 1763. This painting has dimensions of about 54 by 43 inches. Fidelia and Speranza mean Faith and hope.
Initially, Elisabeth is the matriarch of the four generations of women talked about in the story. Elisabeth works in the house, but she’s married to a field slave and has three daughters. Not much insight is given on Elisabeth and her feelings, yet through the narration it is as if she lived vicariously through her youngest daughter, Suzette: “It was as if her mother were the one who had just had her first communion not Suzette” (20) Even though Elisabeth too worked in the house, Suzette had more privileges than her mother and the other slaves. Elisabeth represented the strength and the pride of her people: “You have a mother and a father both, and they don’t live up to the [plantation] house” (25). She would constantly remind Suzette of her real family, which signifies the remembrance of a history of people and their roots. It is up to Suzette to keep the heritage even through the latter miscegenation of the generations to come.
Music has played an important part in my life. My love for music comes from my dad. Growing up I remember him having a room full of CDs and instruments that he played daily. The songs varied in genres and the instruments ranged from pianos, violins to drums. I grew up loving almost every style of music so, it is very difficult for me to dislike a song unless, it is vulgar or “dark”.
By most accounts, the year 1500 was in the midst of the height of the Italian Renaissance. In that year, Flemmish artist Jean Hey, known as the “Master of Moulins,” painted “The Annunciation” to adorn a section of an alter piece for his royal French patrons. The painting tells the story of the angel Gabriel’s visit to the Virgin Mary to deliver the news that she will give birth to the son of God. As the story goes, Mary, an unwed woman, was initially terrified about the prospects of pregnancy, but eventually accepts her fate as God’s servant. “The Annunciation” is an oil painting on a modest canvas, three feet tall and half as wide. The setting of the painting is a study, Mary sitting at a desk in the bottom right hand corner reading, and the angel Gabriel behind her holding a golden scepter, perhaps floating and slightly off the canvas’s center to the left. Both figures are making distinct hand gestures, and a single white dove, in a glowing sphere of gold, floats directly above Mary’s head. The rest of the study is artistic but uncluttered: a tiled floor, a bed with red sheets, and Italian-style architecture. “The Annunciation” was painted at a momentous time, at what is now considered the end of the Early Renaissance (the majority of the 15th Century) and the beginning of the High Renaissance (roughly, 1495 – 1520). Because of its appropriate placement in the Renaissance’s timeline and its distinctly High Renaissance characteristics, Jean Hey’s “Annunciation” represents the culmination of the transition from the trial-and-error process of the Early Renaissance, to the technical perfection that embodied the High Renaissance. The Sandro Botticelli was an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance who painted many famous works. The Annunciation 1485, this picture is one of the jewels of 15th century Italian art, embodying the achievement that made Florence so famous and influential. On the other hand, the annunciation 1475 painted by Early Netherlandish Han Memling is one of the largest surviving depiction of the annunciation, with the varied composition in the work. Both works represented the European painting in that period, with different painting technique, and offers artists ways of skills. The artists depicted the human form, and architectural spaces, and illustrated the relationship between both, as well as the elements of the subject matter were expressed. Han Memling used the motif and styles which created a great effect.

Both Jan van Eyck and Fra Angelico were revered artists for the advances in art that they created and displayed for the world to see. Their renditions of the Annunciation were both very different, however unique and perfect display of the typical styles used during the Renaissance. Jan van Eyck’s panel painting Annunciation held all the characteristics of the Northern Renaissance with its overwhelming symbolism and detail. Fra Angelico’s fresco Annunciation grasped the key elements used in the Italian Renaissance with usage of perspective as well as displaying the interest and knowledge of the classical arts.
During the Italian Renaissance Raphael was one of the most influential artists. He painted many brilliant pieces, mastering the use of depth, perspective, and the use of shadow and light. Throughout his life, Raphael used the Madonna as a reoccurring subject in his work. One example of this subject is the Madonna of the Candelabra. This dark shadowy portrayal exemplifies the pure and humanistic ideals of the Madonna that made Raphael’s versions so well known and loved throughout the ages. Peter Paul Rubens’ masterpiece, Venus and Adonis, is not only a significant artwork of the baroque-period in Europe during the 17th century, but it also tells the mythological story that begins with love, and ends in tragedy. Displayed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this painting is admired for representing the unique baroque-style of this era, as well as Rubens’ particular use of the medium and how it reaches those who are viewing it. His attention to detail and crafty use of symbolism within the painting assist viewers in deciphering the story, along with the values of the time period in which Rubens was living. In studying the composition of the work and noting the historical context from which it came, one can ultimately understand Rubens’ point-of-view and thus, connect to the painting in a way he or she has never imagined.
The Flowers By Alice Walker Written in the 1970's The Flowers is set in the deep south of America and is about Myop, a small 10-year old African American girl who explores the grounds in which she lives. Walker explores how Myop reacts in different situations. She writes from a third person perspective of Myop's exploration. A person's ability to develop is due to two factors, maturation and learning. Although maturation, or the biological development of genes, is important, it is the learning - the process through which we develop through our experiences, which make us who we are (Shaffer, 8). In pre-modern times, a child was not treated like they are today. The child was dressed like and worked along side adults, in hope that they would become them, yet more modern times the child's need to play and be treated differently than adults has become recognized. Along with these notions of pre-modern children and their developmental skills came the ideas of original sin and innate purity. These philosophical ideas about children were the views that children were either born "good" or "bad" and that these were the basis for what would come of their life.
Remember by Rossetti The opening two lines of Rossetti’s sonnet "Remember" introduce the idea of separation, but whether the speaker’s eminent departure is because she has chosen to leave her lover or because she is dying is not immediately clear. As the poem unfolds, the reader understands that death will divide the couple, and the initial hint of that is the phrase "silent land" to describe the place the speaker is going. The words seem to define a cemetery or individual grave more than heaven, and "silent," in particular, implies a dormant state—an existence and a place that are neither joyous nor painful, pleasant nor sad. The opening lines also portray the speaker’s desire to be remembered, and she requests her lover to do just that.
