Would you be able to live in a world with no sun? In the short story “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury a group of scientists and their kids live on Venus, where the sun shines an hour every seven years. The text follows a nine-year-old Earth girl, Margot, who recently moved to Venus from Earth. Consequently, the kids from Venus don’t seem so friendly towards Margot for having had the luxury of the sun. It appears that the jealousy of the children of Venus causes them to treat Margot poorly by oppressing, harassing, and isolating her.
To begin with, the author shows theme through events in the text. The kids on Venus constantly oppress Margot. Bradbury states, “But Margot remembered. ‘It’s like a penny,’ she said once, eyes Closed. ‘No it’s not!’ the children cried. ‘It’s like a fire,’ she said, ‘in the stove.’ ‘You’re lying, you don’t remember!’ cried the children”(Bradbury, 1954). In this quote, Margot recalls her memories of the sun, but the kids choose not to believe her. They don’t want Margot to be right, so they deny her thoughts. Bradbury writes, "‘Hey, everyone, let’s put her in a closet before the teacher comes!’ ‘No,’ said Margot, falling back. They surged about her, caught her up and bore her, protesting, and then pleading, and then crying, back into a tunnel, a room, a closet, where they slammed and locked the door”(Bradbury, 1954). In this quote, the kids forcefully lock her up in a closet, proceeding to leave her there. This shows that the kids feel better once they get a sense of power over Margot by physically harassing her. It is significant because if they need a better sense of power over her, they must feel inferior prior to harassing her which ties in with their jealousy towards
