Would you be able to live in a world with no sun? In the short story “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury a group of scientists and their kids live on Venus, where the sun shines an hour every seven years. The text follows a nine-year-old Earth girl, Margot, who recently moved to Venus from Earth. Consequently, the kids from Venus don’t seem so friendly towards Margot for having had the luxury of the sun. It appears that the jealousy of the children of Venus causes them to treat Margot poorly by oppressing, harassing, and isolating her.
To begin with, the author shows theme through events in the text. The kids on Venus constantly oppress Margot. Bradbury states, “But Margot remembered. ‘It’s like a penny,’ she said once, eyes Closed. ‘No it’s not!’ the children cried. ‘It’s like a fire,’ she said, ‘in the stove.’ ‘You’re lying, you don’t remember!’ cried the children”(Bradbury, 1954). In this quote, Margot recalls her memories of the sun, but the kids choose not to believe her. They don’t want Margot to be right, so they deny her thoughts. This is significant because the reason they don’t want her to be right is the jealousy of the kids towards Margot’s knowledge of the sun.

Another display of theme would be harassment towards the main character.
Bradbury writes, "‘Hey, everyone, let’s put her in a closet before the teacher comes!’ ‘No,’ said Margot, falling back. They surged about her, caught her up and bore her, protesting, and then pleading, and then crying, back into a tunnel, a room, a closet, where they slammed and locked the door”(Bradbury, 1954). In this quote, the kids forcefully lock her up in a closet, proceeding to leave her there. This shows that the kids feel better once they get a sense of power over Margot by physically harassing her. It is significant because if they need a better sense of power over her, they must feel inferior prior to harassing her which ties in with their jealousy towards
her. A final example of the theme of jealousy is Margot’s isolation from the rest of the kids. It is shown throughout the text that the kids want her to be separated from them. An example of this would be, “‘Nothing!’ he cried. ‘It was all a joke, wasn’t it?’ He turned to the other children. ‘Nothing’s happening today. Is it?’ They all blinked at him and then, understanding, laughed and shook their heads”(Bradbury, 1954). In this quote, the kids separate Margot from them by isolating her thoughts. They purposely claim that nothing was happening when they knew there was. Conversely, the kids weren’t always mean to her. Moreover, they offered her to play with them, but she declined them. “...she would play no games with them in the echoing tunnels of the underground city. If they tagged her and ran, she stood blinking after them and did not follow”(Bradbury. 1954). This shows that the kids were willing to give Margot a chance. In conclusion, jealousy can lead people to treat others poorly by harassing, oppressing, or isolating them. It is shown when the kids at Venus were constantly treating Margot differently because of her knowledge of the sun. It is significant to understand that people aren’t themselves when they’re jealous. They act upon the heat of the moment, just as the kids at Venus.
The first element Bradbury uses is foreshadowing. In the beginning of the story Bradbury expresses Lydia concern with the nursery by saying to her husband “I just want you to look at it, is all, or call a psychologist in to
In the story it says, “About how it was like a lemon, it was, and how hot . . . I think the sun is a flower, That blooms for just one hour.” This connects back to my idea that outcasts are sometimes the solution to society’s problems. Due to this quote, Margot’s statement about the sun is what makes her an outsider in the eyes of society. Later in the passage, it is revealed that Margot’s statement about the sun was correct and solved the problem of what the children think the sun resembles.
Margot goes to school with classmates that resent her. They hate her for having seen the sun, something they wanted so badly. This jealousy led to an overwhelming hatred that they were reminded of any time they saw her. Her classmates let their hatred take over and they locked her in a closet as revenge for the pain she had caused them all. But unlike Wendy and Peter from The Veldt, Margot was affected negatively from her classmateś actions.
emotions and subtle nuances provided by the author in the book, and many of the deeper feelings and emotions therein are missed entirely, or touched on much too briefly
...sual atmosphere created by the heat contributes to Leo’s feeling that the world in his imagination has more reality than everyday life. In addition, the weather acts as a metaphor for events which Leo cannot control, ‘It all began with the weather defying me’ (Chapter 1. p. 39) and comes to symbolize the increasing emotional intensity of a young child’s involvement in the adult world, ‘All the heat of the afternoon seemed to be concentrated where we stood…It made me uncomfortable’ (Chapter 7. P. 82-83). This creates a mood of intense anticipation and suspense as the heat reflects how events are escalating out of control. Furthermore, the writer portrays the world of children through Leo and Marcus’s daily ritual of visiting the thermometer to track record temperatures as it adds to the mood of innocent expectation and conveys the simplicity of childhood pursuits.
In All Summer in a Day by Ray Bradbury, Margot isolates herself from her peers because she does not accept their society’s opinions of the sun. The children welcome all those who conform to their ideals of their naive society, yet Margot distinguishes herself as a pariah and distances herself from her peers. William and his peers scorn Margot which brings upon her loneliness and unhappiness. An example of this is, “They edged away from her, they would not look at her. She felt them go away… And then, of course, the biggest crime of all was that
All the novels that I have read in class this year have been absolutely fascinating and remarkable. Each one captivated me in an indescribable way. However, there is a particular novel that stood out to me. It is a novel that is highly enjoyable and I recommend it to anyone looking for a poetic and simple book to read. That novel is One Crazy Summer by the distinguished author of books for children and teens, Rita Williams-Garcia.
First off, as evidence, the kids didn’t ever remember seeing the sun, so they were extremely thankful and happy when they got the chance to see it. While we see it almost every day, and we don’t even think about the sun. It’s kind of like dessert, you don’t get it a whole lot, but when you do, it tastes amazing, kind of like the kids in All Summer in a Day, except you
In the story, a classroom of kids are living on Venus, where all it does is rain. The children cannot remember a time where there wasn’t nonstop downpour of rain. One child, Margot, who transferred to Venus from Earth has seen the sun. The children don’t believe she has seen the sun, because jealousy brings them to deny Margot’s words. The kids obviously don’t have control over the sun and rain. That is why the presence of the sun every
While someone might argue that the theme is jealousy they forget that in the text is says that Margot was sad when the class bullied her. When the kids locked Margot in the closet,
Every day, someone is picked on and judged based on practically anything they say these days, and sometimes it happens without the person even saying a thing. People are taught at a young age not to judge a book by its cover, yet everyone still does, of course they’ll pick the pretty colorful cover over the old tattered gray one. The problem is, they don’t just choose what book they’ll read next based on the cover, they’ll also choose who they sit next to on the bus that way or who they pick for a partner to do a project with. In the story, Margot is picked on because she is much different from the other children. She remembers what the sun feels like and waits for it to return every day. The children view her as strange for that, and don’t treat her as an equal. They don’t care about her feelings and throw them around as if they were a toy. This has become such a common event in real life that people don’t even realize they’re doing it anymore. If anyone is different from them, they automatically assume that person is weird and they can’t associate with them. In some cases now, the problem becomes so unbearable for the said “weird” person, they believe the only way it will stop is if they end their life. This happens more and more each day, yet people still don’t stop with the rude comments, snide jokes, and awful treatment to others. The children in this
want to avoid suffering and are therefore attracted to the possibility of escape, and More instantly recognises this idea as one of Machaevelli's. As Machaevelli
“It had been raining for seven years; thousands upon thousands of days compounded and filled from one end to the other with rain”. Imagine being on the planet venus which is stormy and dark, with only the sun coming out for 2 hours every 7 years. Life in the short story, “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury describes that life is different on Venus because the sun only appears for only 2 hours every 7 years. This story takes place on planet Venus. In an underground building where kids have their education taught with. And one of the kids who lives in that building, on the planet Venus, is Margot. Margot is a 9-year-old kid who only arrived on Venus 5 years ago. Margot is currently being harrased because she has seen in the sun. Since she
“A Thousand Splendid Suns” starts off with a little girl named Mariam. The mood for the book is automatically set when her mother calls her a harami. Born a disgrace to her father and a burden to her mother. Mariam faces a life of rejection and when something unexpected happens and she is forced to go live with her father, and his three meddling wives, things don't turn out in her favor. Next we have
Furthermore, another theme in this book is innocence. For example, when Holden tells phoebe about his dream of him being in the rye with a whole bunch of kids and him having to catch all the kids that try to go over the cliff… he tells her he wants to be the catcher in the rye(and that is found on page 115)This evidence relates to the thesis because their are some teenagers that want to help little kids and be nice to them .Also that it wants to show that he wants kids to stay kids.
