Alison Bechdel is an American cartoonist and she has been having a 30 year career in writing and drawing. She is best known for her own comic strip of “Dykes to Watch Out For” in 2008 and “Are You My Mother: A Comic Drama” in 2012. She loves drawing since she was just a little kid, and it all started from her journal book. She made the journal with full of her fantasies, she wrote her everyday life in it and she drew abstract lines to decorate her writing. When she was very young, her mother really wants her to become a writer, instead of an artist, but she does not like it. But, the real meaning of it, is “After this, therefore because of this.” She explains with an assumption of “because event “B” happen after event “A”, then “A” must’ve the cause of event “B” (Alison Bechdel). She then told us her past life story after she explains those words, and here is the big picture of what her story is: one day she wrote a letter to her parents, which was saying “I AM A LESBIAN”. The other day after she told her parents, her mom revealed about their big family secret that she had never known before. Her mom told her that her father had ever an affair with another guy, who came from his high school friend. Then, after her mom told to her that her dad was gay, she directly had a brief awkward conversation with him on that day. In about few months after that, her dad died from a car crash and she never knew if that was because of suicide or what. Therefore, she thinks that if she hadn’t send that letter to their parents before, her dad shouldn’t be dead by a car crash, so she always thinks that it was because of her fault. Though it is been 30 years right now, at some level her brain always knows that it was not because of her fault and it is just a logical fallacy; however, her heart always says the opposite way.
