As there is no leader who truly show all of the virtues, there are leaders who exemplify a singular virtue very well. The traits of a virtuous leader allow them to bring them and their county to success. There is such thing as too much virtue, the “Golden Mean” created by Aristotle, is the middle point between having too much of too little of one virtue. If you have too much of one virtue, it can be just as bad as having no virtue. A Virtuous leader exemplifies Courage, Wisdom and Selflessness on a daily basis which allows them to be Virtuous leaders. Courage is a necessity for being a virtuous leader. Courage is the ability to have strength in the face of fear and pain. Courage is required to be a virtuous leader because a leader should …show more content…
Wisdom is having knowledge and good judgment.Being a Wise leader also required the ability to think quickly and improvise. Wise leaders can use the knowledge they have to the fullest extent possible and can use it to safely lead their people. One of the many traits of a wise leader is the ability to outthink your opponent, not because you know more, but because you can do more with what you know. A great example of this is Alexander The Great. Alexander the great was born in July 356 B.C. and was the leader of the Macedonians. He was at the age of 20 when he became the king. After two years of patiently building an army moved his armies to Persia. He spent 2 years, securing the coastal region to prevent the interference of the Persian navy. Using his quick thinking and military logistical, he slowly wore down Persia. Another Virtuous leader who showed courage is Odysseus. Odysseus is an influential king in the book The Aeneid of Virgil. He displays his wisdom through the ability to see the bigger picture and choose which battles are worth fighting. He is shown as a godlike figure for his immense Wisdom. “ If you really want me to choose a companion myself, how could I forget godlike Odysseus, whose heart and manly spirit are eager and ready beyond the daring of others when it comes to dangerous toil of any kind If he will go with me, the two of us might go through flaming fire and come back alive, for no one else can think …show more content…
He cares so much about them that he doesn't care about his emotions, and it works. A leader that can hide his emotions over something that deeply upsets them and still inspire his men is a selfless leader. Another leader who showed selflessness is Martin Luther. Martin Luther was a monk who feared god's judgement, he believed in justification by faith, not by the works of the church. He believed that the church selling salvation was not right, so he did something to stop it. He wrote the 95 Theses against the church, and when the church reprimanded him for going against them. He didn't care. He was excommunicated from the church, effectively sentencing himself to hell for his cause. He gave up his chances of heaven for the common people that he didn't even know. Those are the traits of a true Virtuous
Have you heard of a man named Alexander the Great, the famous historical figure? There are many amazing stories about him explaining the courageous things he had accomplished. However, if you learn more about him and his accomplishments you will soon realized the real person Alexander was. Alexander the Great, ruler of his empire was in fact not great as his title states. The definition of great is a person who shows concern for others, has leadership and shows intelligence. Alexander didn’t show any of these characteristics therefore he doesn’t deserve the title of “great”.
Another trait of leadership is that a lot of people valued him. In the text it states, “He was of sovereign value in all eyes. / And thought so much distinguished, he was wise / And in his bearing modest as a maid / He never yet a boorish thing had said /
applause of the crowd for his own praise. He often confused the will of God with his own social and political agenda. He even sometimes compared the gospel of Jesus Christ with special interest and American foreign policy.
Built-in qualities such as intelligence, good looks, height and so on are not necessary to become a good leader. Anyone can cultivate the proper leadership qualities. In order to excel in their leadership a good leader must possess qualities such as self awareness, courage, confidence, innovation, fairness, openness, and dedication among others. Odysseus in The Odyssey, and Samuel, Saul and David in the Books of Samuel, display these characters. However, at some occasions they fail to do so.
What do you think when you picture a virtuous leader? Do you picture someone who possesses integrity, loyalty, and knowledge or someone who is strong, loud and powerful? Leaders can have many different qualities and still be successful, respected, and admired. There are some leaders who are in total control, they tell a group of people what to do and people follow orders. Others may be focused more on morals, they teach people, listen to other people’s ideas, as well as wanting to help people; Atticus Finch from Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is a really worthy comparison to this type of leader. Atticus falls under the INFJ personality type,
Few historical figures stand out in the same degree as that of Alexander the Great. He was a warrior by 16, a commander at age 18, and was crowned King of Macedon by the time he was 20 years old. He did things in his lifetime that others could only dream about. Alexander single-handedly changed the nature of the ancient world in just over a decade. There were many attributes that made Alexander “Great.” He was a brilliant strategist and an inspired leader; he led by example and was a conqueror at heart. In looking at his early childhood, accession to the throne, conquests, marriage, and death one can see why Alexander the Great is revered in historical contexts as one of the greatest figures of all time.
Leaders should also possess confidence or faith, in themselves and in others. Odysseus is a great example of a confident leader because he never gives up on himself or his men. “More fearsome is it now, than when the Cyclops penned us in a cave?...Did i not keep my nerve, and use my wits to find a way out for us?” Odysseus inspires and gives his men a boost of confidence in themselves whenever they lost their oars at sea.
ability to live in harmony with both the laws and noble norms of society, to overcome opposition, and to demonstrate the acquisition of virtue by the way they live... at the same time, heroic leaders are exemplars for their followers and receive much of their power by personifying the virtues to which both they and their followers are committed. Competence – Leaders base their actions on reason and moral principles. They do not make decisions based on their emotions.
Alexander the Great was the king of Macedonia, conqueror of the Persian Empire, and one of the greatest military geniuses of all times. Even at an early age, Alexander had the promise to become a great leader. Through all his victories and conquests, he has become a great hero and has had a large impact on history. That is why I chose he book Alexander the Great, by J.R. Hamilton for my review. Hamilton does a very good job with the story of Alexander the Great.
Alexander II has been considered “a great historical figure without being a great man, that what he did was more important than what he was.” ( W.E Mosse) For 26 years, Czar Alexander II ruled russia. During his reign, he made his mark on history by stepping outside of the box and going to extreme measures to help his people. He has been labeled as the “Liberator of tsar” for the ending of serfdom. Czar Alexander II of Russia has made an impact on history because of his interesting background, fatal assassination, and the changes made after his assassination.
Throughout history, there have been leaders who are considered as admirable due to positive influences over other individuals. For example, in my opinion, Abraham Lincoln was able to influence the masses of people because he chose to think and behave differently from other leaders before him. When a person is considered as a leader, there are several responsibilities and qualities that will attract others to follow after the teachings that are demonstrated. Leadership can be described as the process for “guiding individuals, groups, and entire organizations in establishing goals and sustaining action to support goals (Shockley-Zalabak, 2015, p. 220). Additionally, each leader will usually have a distinctive
The most important trait of a leader is selflessness. To be selfless means to put others before yourself and care about others needs more than your own. Selflessness is what separates a leader from a boss. A boss just tells people what to do while a leader shows them how to do it and even helps out. Napoleon a character from George Orwell’s, Animal farm does not have this very important trait.
There are many leaders in the world, but a great ruler is passionate, honorable and one who can inspire even in the most hopeless circumstances. Alexander the Great was a great ruler. Alexander the Great was a ruler that was not only inspiring, but he was fearless, smart, bold and courageous. Alexander the Great inspired his soldiers to crave more. He has inspired people since the day he started ruling. What is inspirational about Alexander the Great is that he inspired his troops to the point that they did not question him when they were outnumbered three to one in a battle, they trusted him with their lives and were willing to die for him (Alexander the Great: man behind the legend).
To be a great orator, a visionary and a strategic thinker all make up a good leader, but by having all these traits doesn 't make up for the loss of the other things that a leader should have, like the ability to listen to his people 's need and the ability to think for the better of the nation instead of the power hungry attitude that ambition can led you
