Sir Alexander Fleming changed the world of medicine not only in his days but also in the world today. We have the medicines and antibiotics that we have today because of Alexander Fleming. His discovery was much needed in the world and I hate to think where we would be in the medicine world if he hadn’t discovered penicillin.
Alexander Fleming was born on August 6, 1881 in Darvel, Ayrshire, Scotland. He was born on Lochfield Farm, which was his family’s farm. Alex was the seventh of eight children. He was the third child born to his father’s second wife. With his upbringing in Scotland, Alexander had much more appreciation of the natural world at a young age. (Brown, 2013)
Alexander started his schooling at Loudoun Moor. He moved from Loudoun Moor to a bigger school in Darvel. He finally enrolled in Kilmarnock Academy in 1894 when he was 12 or 13 years old. A year later, Alexander moved to London with his older brother, Thomas. He completed his high school education at Regent Street Polytechnic. (Brown, 2013)
After completing high school in London, Alexander got a job as a shipping clerk. In 1901, Fleming started school at St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School. This was the beginning of his medical studies. He got into St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School on a scholarship and a legacy that his uncle left. In 1908, Alexander won the gold medal as a top medical student at the University of London. Fleming was originally going to become a surgeon, but he started a temporary position in the laboratories at St. Mary’s. This temporary position led Fleming to change his field to bacteriology instead of surgery. In 1945, Fleming was recognized for his achievements and he reached the Nobel Prize for Physiology. On March 11, 1955, Fleming died in London, England. (Brown, 2013)

This was a factor that was based on chance, as the penicillin (mould) had probably blown through a window. In my opinion Fleming didn't have much do to with the development of Penicillin, but he did recognise its importance and published his findings. Florey and Chain were scientists. They stumbled across Fleming's research papers and were intrigued by his findings. They were sure that, if Fleming was right, this discovery could save a lot of lives, prevent pain and make it much easier to fight infectious diseases and prevent other infections.

Years later other scientists were also intrigued by the possibilities of penicillin and produced enough penicillin to prove that it was a useable antibiotic. The scientists from Great Britain were developing all of this during World War II, and unfortunately funding for their drug was unavailable due to the war. They decided to bring their concepts to the United States, and once enough was made, it was eventually used, to treat wounded soldiers during World War I.

He had two other brothers but unlike them, Alexander was the only child from the three children that didn't die from tuberculosis at a young age. Bell’s siblings that died names were Melville James Bell, and Edward Charles Bell. At an early age, his father educated him instead of going to an actual school with other students. His parents names were Eliza Grace Symonds and his fathers name was Alexander Melville Bell. Eliza Grace Symonds was deaf since she was born. He adopted the middle name, Graham, at age 10 after a family-friend.

His father, James Hamilton -- Scottish merchant of St. Christopher – was the younger son of a minor Scottish noble. His mother, Rachel Fawcett Levine was married a Danish proprietor of St. Croix named John Michael Levine. Ms. Levine left her husband John and was later divorced from him on June 25, 1759, two years after Alexander was born. His parents soon separated. However, Alexander grew up with his mother and his brother James, living on the ragged edge of poverty. He had no further contact with his father, and when his mother died in 1768, he became an orphan at the age of 11 (Hamilton).

After discussing his parents and their relationship, Hamilton talks about how Aristotle was Alexander's tutor from age 13 to 16 and stimulated his interest in science, medicine, and philosophy. The book then talks about how well prepared Alexander was to take over the throne. Then, in the summer of 336 BC Philip was assassinated, and Alexander took over the Macedonian throne.
Because of his impact on the medical community one cannot help but rank Louis Pasteur at or near the top when considering the top 100 most influential persons in history. He changed the way people thought about germs and diseases, revolutionized antiseptic practices and developed a vaccine to prevent the painful and deadly disease of rabies. Louis Pasteur will continue to have an impact on modern life long after his death, which is why he is the most important medical mind ever.

Another important individual who drove history was the Italian astronomer and scientist Galileo Galilei. Galileo discovered something so important that it changed the selfish perspective that humans were the center of the universe and led to the growth of human knowledge. Utilizing mathematics and a telescope he had developed, Galileo observed that the planets revolved around the sun and not the Earth. This was a significant discovery because not only did it contradict what the church had taught, it also showed that the universe was not what it seemed. With this truth uncovered, many people began to fascinate over the universe. This triggered people to begin studying space extensively and eventually lead to present day space exploration. Galileo also left a lasting impression upon many great minds, such as Sir Isaac Newton, who used Galileo's research and theories to further his own studies such as the physical laws, and their properties.
Early Life ~ Alexander Graham Bell was born on March 3rd, 1847 at his family home, 16 South Charlotte Street, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was born to Professor Alexander Melville Bell and Eliza Grace (nee Symonds). He had two brothers, Melville James Bell and Edward Charles Bell, both who died of tuberculosis. Bell originally did not have a middle name; he was allowed to adopt the middle name “Graham” for his eleventh birthday, after pleading with his father. To friends and family, he was known as “Aleck”.
At his Nobel Peace Prize speech in 1945, Alexander Fleming warned against the misuse of antibiotics and the fact that by doing this, one allows the bacteria to ‘become educated’ and therefore become resistant to the antibiotic.
