Ageism is the terms used to describe the people as the get older and changes start happening to the body. “Ageism is prejudice and discrimination directed at older people”(Feldman, 2014, pp 539). Ageism usually has a negative connotation to the term and usually describes someone who is not functioning up to the status quo and we think they should be. “Older adults who show memory lapses are viewed as chronically forgetful and likely to suffering from some mental disorder. Similar behavior for young adults is judged more charitably , merely evidence of temporary forgetfulness” (Feldman, 2014, pp 539). The psychological factor tends to be a deciding factor on not only the physical but also the mental activities that the late adult hood person is involved in. The more involved the late adult participates in mainly improves you health and mental well-being. “African American grandparents usually play a central role in childrearing”(Feldman, 2014, pp 590). “Asian cultures are more organized around extended families and display more continuity throughout the life span” (Feldman, 2014, pp 572). In China late adulthood people are less likely to show memory losses because they are held in high esteem.” (Feldman, 2014, pp 561). All of these cultures are well engaged with their families and society and there for have more successful aging process then some cultures that don’t tend to keep the late adults engaged in society. The second cultural factor that affects aging it economic factors where the late adult or younger doesn’t receive the necessary health care or food to have successful aging. The lack of health care and proper nutrition can have a profound affect on the way people age and if they can even make it to late adulthood. “A child born in Japan has a life expectancy of 83 years. In countries like Gambia people have an average life expectancy of 45” (Feldman, 2014, pp 556).
