What is the age of responsibility? Can it be proven? Do people have different thoughts about the age of responsibility? When someone becomes an adult, they have to be mature and responsible to do their own things. They need to be at a certain age to be considered as an adult, but mature. The law may let younger people do certain things, but not as an adult. Younger people, like 16 year olds, have a different way of thinking. People will often fool around at times, but mostly they have to be all grown up and be responsible. There are different ways in which someone can also be considered as an adult. In different religions or cultures they have certain traditions for males and females when they become a young adult. The age of responsibility …show more content…
Greenblatt demonstrates this when he states,“By the time adolescents become adults, they are accustomed to such inconsistent treatment.”(1) The readers understand that teenagers who are about to be an adult are not comfortable with the new responsibilities. Adolescents are treated differently than adults. Adolescents get more help in things they need. Young adults, 18 - 25 year olds, have less experience in life than an adult. Adults , 25 year olds and up, have more experience than those who are new. Another example is when Greenblatt states,“Practically from puberty, young people are bombarded with mixed signal about the scope of their rights and the depth of their responsibilities. And most of those mixed signals come from the laws and local governments.”(1) The quote shows the reader that puberty has a huge impact in one’s life. It takes time for young adults to get comfortable and get comfortable with their new responsibilities. Young adults do not know where to start and where to go to to get their things done. Life as an adult may be hard at the beginning, but one gets use to it. The person gets comfortable and starts to understand their new position as an adult and not as a
...who reflects on his or her own teenage years: Young teens lack the maturity, independence, and future orientation that adults have acquired” (Stevenson, 2014, p. 268). Bryan tries to explain this to the court as a way to prove that trying children as adults is unethical.

The age of responsibility is a time when adolescents become an adult and are put on with the responsibilities that they will have for the rest of your life. In the article “Age of Responsibility” by Alan Greenblatt they question what age is considered the age of responsibility? There is no set age that is considered the age of responsibility because everyone develops differently and at different times so there is no set age.
Some examples that shows that one is responsible is when they have a job, a companionship, and are financially stable. Establishing connections within the world is important so one can have things they become responsible for. Being able to accomplish something from by one’s word shows their maturity in many scenarios. In my opinion, showing the obligation to acquire something is the most relevant when determining one’s consideration of adulthood. An adult is responsible for their own choices and are aware that their decisions can affect other people around them. The ability to balance out priorities like family, friends, work or school can be difficult but hitting the age of adulthood brings reason into a person. If a person is acknowledged to be responsible in another person’s point of view, it is most likely right to consider them as an adult despite of legal “laws” or accepted
People label children as adults and acknowledge that they have grown a sense of responsibility and direction, as well as thought of the future. I personally see the transition into adulthood as self-awareness. When you gain the self-awareness to really understand that everyone around you goes to sleep, wakes up, eats, and does all the things that you do it really brings a sense of humanity to yourself and you start to treat people better. Annie Dillard, a Pulitzer prize winning author, writes this in her short story, “The Chase.” (Dillard) “…At the corner, I looked back; incredibly, he was still after us. He was in city clothes: a suit and tie, street shoes. Any normal adult would have quit, having sprung us
However, the human brain fully matures around the mid-20s and early 30s. With the brain developing at a later age, many people have difficulty with impulsive behavior and are more prone to peer pressure. Laurence Steinberg stated that “Adult punishment is partial for a child that lacks comprehension of their acts”. He suggested a separation of the age group of under 12 and ages 12 to 16. In spite of the offense, children under 12 ought to be tried as minors. “Children between the ages of 12 and 16 should be viewed on a case by case basis depending on the competence of the
What is the age most people become responsible? What does the the word responsible even mean? The definition of, responsibility according to “Dictionary.com” is “the state or fact of being accountable or to blame for something”. All that means is that you are able to take accountability for your actions, good or bad, and have to deal with the consequences. Once you have the ability to own up to your actions, is when you are able to be called responsible. So that is why the age at which people become responsible should be around 18 years old.
In America, when a person turns eighteen, that person is now considered an adult and is treated like one as well. That person is entrusted with responsibilities such as voting, enlisting in the armed services, opening personal bank accounts and possibly holding public office. If a person can be entrusted with such responsibilities at that particular age, who can say that he/she is not ...
J. J. Arnett argues his theory about a developmental stage individuals go through of 18-25 year olds as a new concept, (Arnett, 2000, pp. 469). He describes emerging adulthood as being a sustained period of time where this age group, as mentioned previously, explores their roles preceding being an adult. These movements can include events similarly by taking longer than previous years to get married and have children, moving back in with their parents at a point during this age span, exploring self-identities, not feeling like an adult and feelings of self-failure. James E. Cote, who is a previous colleague of Arnett argues the opposite about this concept being an unexperienced developmental stage Arnett calls, “Emerging Adulthood”. Cote states
Current youth have very different life styles and expectations, consequently adolescents are taking longer to complete the transition into adulthood. Twenty-five years ago, the traditional norms were to get a job straight after school, start courting, get married, save up enough money to set up a home and eventually start a family.... ... middle of paper ... ...
Transition: Actions and decisions are made each day around youth can lead them to have a skewed understanding of what is right and wrong and issues should be addressed appropriately.
Many people believe that age determined adulthood but they are wrong because age is a number and everyone grows up in different rates. You can’t always expect everyone to become mature at the same age, because everyone is different. Many teens become adults faster for certain reason and some of them were not give the option they just had to too. Becoming an adult is not an option for everyone but sooner or later you have to grow up because you can’t stay a kid forever. Being 18 years old makes you legally an adult in united states, but in reality we know that 18 years old are very different from maturity as well responsibilities and life experience.
Education is an important part of our society and schools are constantly looking to improve it each and every year. School teaches students abilities that they can apply to their future jobs. High school is designed to get kids ready for college and future employment. Additionally, community service and extracurricular activities are also great for developing students and further improving their skills. Extending high school to a fifth year would not only help prepare students for the workforce but also allow them additional time to improve their skills and make them better workers in general.
As a parent, I have spent a great deal of time observing the behavior, motivation, and thought processes of my children. As they mature these processes have changed, and it has been fascinating to watch. I have learned a great deal on the limits of self control in the adolescent mind during this time, and I believe that families should be held responsible for crimes committed by their teenagers.
Firstly, everyone has gone or will go through the teenage rebellion phase. No matter how good of a person you think you are, you have probably rebelled against an elder person at least once. Once hormones have revealed it-self, children turn into confused young adults that think they can do everything by themselves and that there will be no longer any need of nurture from adults. The word “young” from “Young adults” are what teenagers completely ignore, when actually they should do the opposite and ignore the “adults” part.
