Everywhere we turn, we see women with various hair colors and styles. Hair coloring can be artistic if is done properly. Some women wear extensions, some prefer braids, and some opt to style their natural hair, but what makes an African American women take their hair to the next level by experimenting with the use of unconventional colors? More and more we see that women are exploring brighter colors such as red, green, blue, and even purple. Women of all races have tried to introduce color as a means of self expression, however what differentiates whether unconventional colors are considered acceptable by societal standards in African American women? Can African-American women wear eccentric colors in their hair without being considered urban or less classy? It is becoming more common to see African-American women at local stores, walking down the street, or even in the workplace with hints of color in their hair. There are some women who choose to dye their hair entirely with colors that are untraditional because they emulate what they identify as trends on television. The article Straightening My Hair by Bell Hooks makes her argument of finding the reason of why African American women straighten their hair. She first states that Black Americans straighten their hair because it is the stage of transformation; it closes the door of innocence and opens the door to adulthood. Slowly, she starts changing her views. She comes up with the statement that African Americans do not straighten their hair for reasonable reasons, but to imitate the characteristics of white women. She informs that black people repeat this process because they have low self-acceptance of their roots and background, and that they have lost beauty in themselves. My argument against this statement is that it is erroneous to claim that the straightening of African American hair is misinterpreted as their acceptance into the white community; straightening of hair is the symbolism of impending womanhood, closing the door of innocence, and sharing a time to meditate by relaxing your soul.
