"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed. We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal." - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (6). Dr. King stated this in his famous “I have a Dream" speech in Washington, D.C. in 1963. Is affirmative action still needed in America? Affirmative action is still needed because America does not have enough equality and diversity. Almost all of our American history dealt with inequality between the white men and the black men. As time went on, nothing has changed and is still seen in today’s society. There are two definitions of affirmative action: 1) race-neutral, gender-neutral assurance against actual discrimination and 2) racial-preferences and gender-preferences for the correct races and genders (3). Most Americans associate affirmative action with the second definition, causing much controversy. However, the true and intended meaning of affirmative action is the first one. Affirmative action is essential in America because Americans do not have sufficient diversity and equality in our society.
Affirmative action is needed to create diversity in America. Affirmative action allows people of different races and backgrounds to interact in the workplace and universities. During 1996, Neil Rudenstine, president of Harvard University, explained Harvard's commitment to diversity by using John Stuart Mill, who emphasized the value of people being in contact with people who are different from them (5). Justice Powell who stated "a diversity of opinions, experiences, backgrounds, talents, aspirations, and perspectives" helped college students to feel great intellectual exchange, exploration, and growth (5). With such great advantage to the students with colleges with great diversity the education system itself should have implemented a policy such as affirmative action. According to Patricia Gurin, a psychology professor at University of Michigan, students experience better learning in a diverse educational atmosphere and are more prepared to become active in our pluralistic, democratic society after they leave college (5). In America today, we are already have enough problems with people being apathetic and not involved in society. When students grow up in diverse schools, they can become active and help the democratic society. Affirm...

Alexis De Tocqueville painted a portrait of a flourishing democracy within the text, Democracy in America. Tocqueville proposed that equality was one of the fundamental tenets that aided the success of American democracy. He defined equality of conditions as the end of aristocracy: “the noble has fallen on the social ladder, and the commoner has risen; the one descends, the other climbs. Each half century brings them nearer, and soon they are going to touch” (Democracy in America, book, 6). American democracy flourishes because there is an established equality of conditions for all; American democracy enforced the absence of formal rank and the end of births into positions of power while encouraging forms of power that challenged rank and privilege. However, in his analysis, Alexis De Tocqueville recognized the presence of race based inequality and cautioned that the reinforcement of a racial hierarchy could be detrimental to American democracy. Such observations characterize Tocqueville as insightful and
Discrimination is still a chronic global issue, and drastic inequalities still exist at the present time. Thus, the Affirmative Action Law is an important tool to many minorities most especially to women, and people of color, for the reason that this program provides an equality on educational, and professional opportunities for every qualified individual living in the United States. Without this program, a higher education would have been impossible for a “minority students” to attain. Additionally, without the Affirmative Action, a fair opportunity to have a higher-level career...
According to the Encyclopædia Britannica, affirmative action is “an active effort to improve employment or educational opportunities for members of minority groups and women.” However, despite its well-intentioned policies, it has been the source of much controversy over the years. Barbara Scott and Mary Ann Schwartz mention that “proponents of affirmative action argue that given that racism and discrimination are systemic problems, their solutions require institutional remedies such as those offered by affirmative action legislation” (298). Also, even though racism is no longer direct, indirect forms still exist in society and affirmative action helps direct. On the other hand, opponents to affirm...
However, for some time now, sex education has been a hot button issue in the United States. The debate is over which form of sex education is best for students. In recent years there has been much debate about which form of sex education is most effective: Abstinence, Abstinence-Plus, or Comprehensive. Abstinence sex education does not acknowledge that teenagers will become sexually active, thus, students do not learn about the different forms of contraception, and students do not learn about abortion. Also, students are taught that the risks of contracting an STD or HIV are prime reasons to remain abstinent. Abstinence-plus sex education explores the context and significance of sex. Although abstinence-plus education still promotes abstinence, it is acknowledged that many teenagers will become sexually active. Students are taught about contraception, abortion, STDs, and HIV/AIDS. Comprehensive sex education does not focus on teaching young people that they should remain abstinent until marriage, though it does teach it. Although students learn the benefits of abstinence, students learn how to themselves when they do decide to have sex.
Sexual education should be taught in school, but as an abstinence-only program. According to Robert Rector, a researcher for the Heritage Foundation, abstinence-based sexual education reduced teen sexual activity. In fact, it has helped to reduce the amount of teen pregnancy (Teens at Risk, 1). Some may say that comprehensive sexual education is better because it “prepares” the teens for what might happen during sexual activity, but here it will be shown that is not always the truth.

It was founded by Mark Tarpenning and Martin Eberhand for the creation of efficient electric cars. Bright and loud colors are the defining characteristics of most pop art pieces during that time. Pop artists such as Jasper Johns and Roy Lichtenstein accompanied Warhol in this pop art movement. Johns focused on American symbols, like his Flag piece and he also uses patriotic colors; reds, whites, and blues (Art Story). Lichtenstein on the other hand remade different cartoon versions of popular cartoons, like his Popeye piece (Art Story). Warhol seemed to be influenced and influence other pop artists. Some artists during the 1960’s were often influenced with what was going on during that
In 2003, Tesla Motors was founded by a group of engineers who wanted to demonstrate how efficient electrics vehicles were compared to gasoline-powered vehicles. Tesla’s Mission Statement is “To Accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable transport.” Since the release of Tesla Roadster in 2008, they were able to sell more than 2,400 of these vehicles in more than thirty
The color of our eyes, having straight or curly hair, even some diseases are all a combination of the genes we inherit (McLeod, 2015). Those who are extremely in favor of heredity are known as nativists. Their assumption is that the characteristics of the human being are a combination of each person’s unique genetic code. There are some characteristics that emerge with maturity, such as those changes that come with puberty. These types of behaviors that affect our physical development of the body are “preprogramed”.
As time goes on, we see new technologies developing every day. Tesla Motors is an extraordinary development in transportation that changes the way we drive today, providing improvements in safety and environmental impacts. Though Tesla’s were not the first electric vehicles, they are certainly leaving a dent in the auto industry. Tesla motors was founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. Contrary to popular belief, Elon Musk was not the founder but an investor, who later became chairman of the board. Tesla headquarters are located in Palo Alto, California, where all manufacturing takes place.
American teens need a new approach to sexual education. Though more Americans share the belief that abstinence-only education denies youth the information they need about contraceptive use to protect themselves from pregnancy and STDs, abstinence-only is still the primary method of sexual education offered in most U.S schools. Conservatives believe that comprehensive sexuality programs encourage adolescents to engage in sexual activity, and if any teachings about sexual education are allowed, they should focus on an abstinence-only curriculum. This chastity approach to sexual education is both outdated and impractical in today’s society. Abstinence-only sexual education programs often exclude vital information about contraceptives and STDs
Tesla Motors revenue was 3.1 billion dollars in 2014. Assets increased as did their equity both in 2015, assets went up in 7.5 billion dollars and the equity went up to 1.2 billion dollars. Not only did their profit increase, their workforce will soon increase as too. The last research of Tesla Motors workforce is up to 12,000 people from June of 2015. Tesla will also be increasing their manufacturing factories for batteries called Giga-factory which is a collaboration with Panasonic in the Southwest and Western U.S. by year 2020. So far, dealerships are found across the globe such as Canada, Europe, Asia and Australia. Soon Tesla which now is an inspiration for cars of the future, and can bring forward a way for transport when fuel becomes too expensive to buy. Tesla is trying to make consumers not feel obligated to spend more to live and drive a normal life. Tesla sees that electricity is the future and will find every way possible to make sure electricity is the answer. Tesla says that electricity will take fuels replacement as early as 2050 as to where fuel will be expensive by 2020 which isn't too far off. None the less, Tesla has done well in business and will continue to reach new heights in the industry. There have been ups and downs, such as lawsuits
In the United States, there is a rising problem that is not going anywhere anytime soon, that is if we, as citizens, don 't change it. This problem is causing billions of dollars and people 's futures all because schools would rather teach ignorance than the truth. What’s the problem? Sex education. Although sex education may not seem like a rising conflict, it is actually one of the top controversial topics in our country regarding education. According to Brigid McKeon, “Each year, U.S. teens experience as many as 850,000 pregnancies, and youth under age 25 experience about 9.1 million sexually transmitted infections (STIs)” (McKeon). This number is so unbelievable to any sane person, but somehow schools still won 't take the initiative to teach realistic sex education. Sex education can be taught in two different procedures- comprehensive or abstinence only. The difference between the two methods is that comprehensive sex education teaches abstinence as a secondary choice, so that teens who decide not to wait are well educated on how to keep themselves protected. Comprehensive sex education should be required in every single public school because it is the most effective method on how to keep teenagers well informed and prepared.
Abstinence-only education has been predominant method for teaching sexual education in the U.S. for the past several decades. The goal of all sexual education is to educate young people regarding prevention of unwanted pregnancies and STI transmission. However, abstinence-only education attempts to accomplish this by teaching adolescents to simply not have sex, neither providing any education on contraceptives and STI transmission. While abstinence-only education is technically an effective method there are opinions and statistics that would disagree and conclude that comprehensive sex education is better equipped to educate on a wider range of topics.
In today’s society, many individuals are aware of the issue of teenage pregnancy and the high rate of sexually transmitted diseases among the youth. One can simply turn on their television and become quickly aware of the popular, yet controversial, discussion of teenage sexual activity in the United States through the news and shows like Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant. Almost ever, discussion about teenagers and their sexual activity refers back to Sex Education in the public school system. Many individuals would consider Sex Education to be the source and/or solution to the problems that occur as a result of sexually active teenagers in the United States. For many decades, Sex Education has been taught in public schools but also has been a topic of controversy. Proponents of Abstinence-Only Education argue that Traditional Sex Education should not just focus on teaching students about contraceptives and how to use them, but instead it should also help students develop and acquire the virtues of prudence and temperance, and teach students the importance of abstinence and the emotional risk that comes along with being sexually active at such a young age. Other people like to argue that Traditional Sex Education should be taught in schools because they believe that informing students about how to be safe when participating in sexual acts is very important. Abstinence-Only Education is the best form of Sex Education for students and should be taught in the public school system because it teaches students the importance of abstaining from sex along with helping them develop or acquire the virtues of prudence and temperance.
