When people talk about the civil rights movement, the first thing that comes to mind is the famous speech “I have a dream” by Martin Luther King. His dream in short was to have equality among human beings. For the past thirty years, this country has been revolutionizing humanitarianism because there is greater concern for human welfare than one hundred years ago. The revolution began during the 1960’s, and during that era this country was drastically involved in changing the civil rights of minority groups. From this concern, a program called affirmative action evolved. Like other civil right movements, the affirmative action movement was implemented to promote equality.
Like some Americans, I am strangely confused when anyone talks about affirmative action. The reason that I have such confusion is the way people word the term affirmative action. If you ask one person who is in favor of affirmative action, his or her response is going to be different from someone who is against it. So when I am asked what I think about affirmative action, my answer seems to be twisted because I really don’t know what affirmative action is. The only exposure I have had to the term affirmative action is that which is taught in the classroom. Since this was such a controversial subject, the scope was very narrow, mostly terms. My key understanding is that of a definition, which I can hardly recall. I don’t know whether affirmative action is a law or if it is a subset of a bunch of different laws that were passed during the civil rights movement. I am also unaware if people protected under this program like the special treatment if there is any.
My attempts to answer the question of what I think I know start with the idea that since affirmative action evolved from the civil rights movement, its aim is to protect certain minority groups as well as women. I think that the idea is used in a business context because there are other discriminatory laws in place to protect outside of work. I can remember from past schooling that there was a Supreme Court case that a white male sued a school institution because he was anti discriminated against because the school had a affirmative action program in place.

The civil rights movement was a movement that held massive numbers of nonviolent protest against racial segregation and discrimination in America especially the southern states during the 1950’s and 60’s. The struggle of African Americans to gain equal rights in America during this time was a major problem. The civil rights movement was not only about stopping racial segregation amongst African Americans but also to challenge the terrible economic, political, and cultural consequences of that time. But with the help of great leaders and organizations in the civil rights movement, help brake the pattern of African Americans being discriminated against and being segregated. Martin Luther King Jr. And Maya Angelou were great leaders who had a huge impact on the civil rights movement; even though Dr. King was in the field marching and protesting to fight against segregation and Angelou wrote poetry to inspire the movement and people aware of segregation, they both helped put an end to segregation here in America (American civil rights movement).
Dr. Ehrenreich understands that she will never have a real experience with poverty, especially since this is nothing more than experiment for her. In addition to this she has a couple of important advantages over a lot of low income workers this being that she is a natural born English speaker and she owns a car as well. Her goal in this project is simply to see if she can live off that income and pay basic expenses as the lower class does on a daily basis. One of the well illustrated themes in this book is simply poverty in America. America has a lack of social programs for the lower class and can seem rather oblivious to this issue with its least privileged citizens. Poverty is not just a cause and effect of unemployment because nobody is safe from it those who are fully employed with a great check can still slip into deep poverty. Affirmative action or positive discrimination can be defined as providing advantages for people of a minority group who are seen to have traditionally been discriminated against. This consists of preferential access to education, employment, health care, or social welfare. In employment, affirmative action may also be known as employment equity. Seeing your bones, shredded muscle, whatever your extreme pain is, you must go find help to receive proper care for your wound immediately from a doctor. A band-aid and some ointment provide no help for the hand that went through a meat grinder. In our society, with twenty-five percent experiencing a mental illness, only forty percent of that twenty-five percent will seek out professional mental help (so ten percent of the original population receives help). This lack of people seeking out professional help demands the question, when does one seek out mental health professionals? Signs of avulsions include an increase of hopelessness and despair. If emotional pain interferes with regularly conducting life and coping methods render ineffective, then it would be helpful to see a mental health professional. If thoughts have turned to “harming yourself or others,” then help must be sought out immediately from an emergency room or a mental health
Throughout her career, Ehrenreich wrote for several publications, including The New Republic, the New York Times and Time magazine, Ms., Z Magazine, Salon.com, The Atlantic Monthly, and In These Times. Ehrenreich’s work allowed the public to be informed of commonly overlooked social inequalities existing within America. Through this work, she aspired to motivate people to take action and help reform social injustices. One of her highest achievements as a journalist was a story written in Ms. concerning the correlation between feminism and heart disease. Another one of her influential works was The Hearts of Men, which discussed the destructiveness of gender roles on America’s productivity and on men and women’s lives. In order to investigate the lives of America’s working class, Ehrenreich spent a couple of months living as a low-wage worker and accounted her experience in Nickel and Dimed. Before the Civil Rights Movement, which took place from 1955-1968, African-Americans had a difficult time establishing an identity and their rights. However, for many African-Americans, the Civil Rights Movement developed a purpose for one’s life and progressed African-Americans’ status and rights in society. Although some people may argue that the Civil Rights Movement was not productive and only caused conflict and havoc, due to the majority of African-Americans still employed in low-level jobs and many towns affected by the Civil Rights Movement being torn apart and degraded, those effects were only temporary and tangible to others. The Movement had a much more profound effect of giving one a purpose or “spark” in life, which later led to African-Americans demanding more rights and equal status in society.

The Major Depressive Episode must include Criterion A1. Depressed mood. Delusions or hallucinations for 2 or more weeks in the absence of a Major Mood Episode (Depressive or Manic) during the lifetime duration of the illness. Symptoms that meet criteria for a Major Mood Episode are present for the majority of the total duration of the active and residual portions of the illness. The disturbance is not attributable to the effects of a substance or another medical condition.

The current system of affirmative action allows universities to admit applicants from certain ethnic and minority groups with lower credentials. The main purpose of affirmative action is to produce a diverse campus population that is comparable to today's society. The use of race as a facto by which someone is admitted to college in the long run will compromise the quality of the university. Implicating affirmative action to solve the problem of diversity on today's campuses has lead to the creation of problems.
Vygotsky placed much more emphasis on language that Piaget (book). Vygotsky’s theory focuses on the role of interpersonal processes and the role of the child’s community and culture which provide a framework from which the child’s construction of meaning develops (book). Although Vygotsky stressed that the process must be in in the context of the child’s culture and the tools available within that culture. Vygotsky was always especially interested in cognitive processes which underline understanding which has led to the concept of shared understandings that occur when people communicate with each other. Vygotsky argued that through the use of language formed through social interaction a child can develop as a thinker and a learner (book). As a conscious individual people could not accomplish very much without the aids and tools within their culture such as language (book). Different theories have been developed and researched to try and demolish some of the confusion encircling the minds of parents, educators, psychologists and others. With this being said, over the past decade there has been a major upsurge of interest in the ideas of Lev Spencer Vygotsky (1896-1934), which has reflected in the dramatic rise in citations of Vygotsky’s publications (Wertsch & Tulviste, 1992). Lev Vygotsky stages of development were not defined by age or biology, the basis behind his theory was unerstanding social and cultural experiences of a child, and how they affect the the child's development. A philosophy of Vygotsky’s theory was the zone of proximal development (ZPD), this is the difference between what a child is able to solve on its own based on the stage of cognitive development, and what a child can learn with the help or experience of another person. Vygotsky believes the skill of knowledge comes from mastering new social situations where learning is shared with others. He also believed that experiences should be shared in social settings, and placed a large emphasis on the quality of group work within the cognitive development process. Within group work, children's language is encouraged to develop, through conversation, questioning and sharing cognitive content with their peers. Vygotsky believed that "social interaction enables the child to develop the intellectual skills needed for logical reasoning and thought." (Grossman, S. 2008) Through language and communication, children learn to evaluate the world and change their actions accordingly.
