For this reflection paper I choose to write about the advertising industry. This industry is one that has always interest me because of how it has evolved so quickly over time and how no brand can get too far without advertising even if the product or service they sell is amazing. And over the years I realized that this felid is something I really want to work in and build a career.

Television had a remarkable effect on the advertising industry and the way it approached its audience. But with all of this new technology coming in advertising agencies also had to learn how to make 30 and 60 second commercials overnight while also successfully segmenting the audience to deliver the right message to the right group of consumers.

During a time of ecomonic downfall, radio would take center stage and change the lives of many. “Radio, moreover, was in a utopian ohase, and it’s destiny seemed to be the uplift of the human condition, not selling toothpaste (86).” During this time in history, it seemed like a shot in the dark that radio could be an effective advertising platform. However, the discovery of Amos ‘n’ Andy sitcom was going to revolutionize the radio industry while capturing the attention of many. Radio had provided cultural developments of Amercian advertising during the 1930’s.
Is advertising the ultimate means to inform and help us in our everyday decision-making or is it just an excessively powerful form of mass deception used by companies to persuade their prospects and customers to buy products and services they do not need? Consumers in the global village are exposed to increasing number of advertisement messages and spending for advertisements is increasing accordingly.
The author of this book Bruce Barton was a partner in a successful advertising firm during the 1920’s. This was a time when the industry of advertising was under going some major changes. These changes had a lot to do with a number of factors the first of which being the post war prosperity this meant people had more money than they ever had before. Another one of these factors had to do with the high number of teens who were now attending high school, this proved to be important because it created a whole other market which hadn’t existed before. One more factor was the advances made in transportation and communication, these advances allowed goods, people, and information to travel long distances relatively quickly intern allowing companies to grow large enough to spread their services nationally. Still another important factor was the invention of financing, this allowed people to pay for durable objects (large objects that would last a couple of years) with affordable installments or payments. But the biggest changes were the actual advertising practices themselves, many of which were pioneered by Barton and his associates, and didn’t become norms in advertising until after the release of Bartons book “The Man Nobody Knows” in 1924. This book served not only as a manual on how to advertise more affectively but also as an example of good advertising itself.

Advertisements are pieces of art or literary work that are meant to make the viewer or reader associate to the activity or product represented on the advertisement.
