Cell phone Technology has been growing tremendous each year since it was invented. While there are numerous advantages to owning and using a cell phone there are just as many disadvantages and hazards that can be caused by them. The estimate of each year is about 1.8 million car accidents caused by cell phone use. 2009 was the year they passed the law of banning cell phones use while driving. It has not stopped the people from using their phones which causes innocent people being injured or killed. Any driver distraction causes the accidents which cause roads not get much safer when they made the use of cell phone illegal. Despite an effective way of communication, using cell phones during driving results in distracting attention of driver …show more content…
In this modern age we have outgrown the need for home phones and the wired phones. .Everywhere you go you see people on their cell phones walking, driving, at school at work at home. But the need of these devices has increased dramatically but in recent years so have the accidents and fatalities been the result of cell phone. Most people who own a mobile phone will text because it’s fast and easy. But when you are sending a text message you are putting more focus on your phone and less focus on the road and it will eventually cause a major accident or even worse. Some people can multitask without causing any danger because they are capable of using hand free speaker. Using a cell phone makes the driver drive slower on the road especially during rush hour. Millions of people throughout the world are using cell phones in their daily routine life. Cell phones provide communication with greater flexibility. It is considered less fashion and more a utility providing several benefits. Cell phones have different features in addition to communication including cameras, video games, music, FM receivers and etc. cell phones not only facilitate business and personal convenience they also provide comfort and safety. However observations, experience and studies all have highlighted the dangerous effect of using cell phones during driving, strictly unadvisable and illegal …show more content…
And the one of the most dangerous side of the cell phones is using it while driving. The research beginning to show that driving while simply talking on a cell phone has caused a lot of accidents in the following year. Based off of all the research in the past years shouldn’t cell phones be banned while driving? It can slows the reaction time. Study at the University of Utah that was published in the Psychological Science state that people who had conversations on any type of cell phone were twice as likely to hit the vehicle in front of them or hit brake and someone hit them from the
Texting and Driving has been a huge factor in accidents. More and more cities are starting to make cell phone use illegal to prevent many life threatening accidents. A phone call and text message can wait. You never know as drivers what the people are doing around you are doing unless you are watching your surroundings. The driver might be a really good driver and might be paying some attention to the road while you are on your phone but the road needs all of the drivers attention so that prevention of accidents is at its
Several individuals need to be constantly sending messages to their friends and family members with the use of a cellphone while driving. More and more drivers have the urge to use their cell phones while driving. This dangerous mixture can result to be even deadly. “As one researcher concluded, a cellphone draws attention away from the routines that would provide a good representation of the driving environment” (qtd. in Seppa 3).
This paper examines the dangers that arise when cell phones are used at the same time as operating a vehicle. The paper will explore the following question of why this is a problem and why the research is important. The variables investigated are the use of cell phones while driving, whether speaking or texting, and the accidents and fatalities caused from the distraction. Data of the accidents and fatalities caused by drivers distracted by their cells phones is stated to research and further explores the age group and gender of the people involved into the accidents to uncover patterns. Possible outcomes of the implementation of laws prohibiting cell phone use while driving are discussed as well as the sampling measures used to survey and research the variables.
When I began this project of cellular communications. I was very focused on trying to prove that cellphones are bad. I saw people all over the Community College’s campus with their heads down, their headphones on, or their phone to their ear. No one seemed to be “here” anymore. Everyone was involved in their own worlds that others were not invited to, and they seemed to prefer it that way.
They say cell phones are the easiest way to communicate with one another remotely. Imagine how people could communicate with their family when they are far away, without cell phones? Cell phones give weather conditions. For example, if a person gets an alert or receives the weather condition on his or her cell phone, this helps to warn of situations on the roads. Cell phones help to record incidents like shooting, fighting, or crashes. However, despite the advantages of cellphones, cell phones are a major cause of car accidents. According to the NSC National Safety council) “Cellphone usage causes 1 in 4 car accidents”. On the other hand, people can know the weather conditions without using cell phones on the roads while they’re driving. For example, they can watch television weather before leaving their homes. This can help drivers easily know the situation on the road. When it comes to communicating with people, one can connect people without using cell phones in other ways, for example, by sending a letter or an email to the people whom they want to contact. . Back in the centuries before the coming of the cell phone, people didn’t complain about not having cell phones, but nowadays almost everyone uses cell phones. Is the use of cell phones while driving more important than our lives? No. Using cellphones during driving is very dangerous because it distracts people’s minds. Cell phones should
Some people argue that just as many car accidents would happen if the use of cell phones were not involved. According to Shows Cellphone Use, “Using a cellphone while driving may be distracting, but it does not lead to higher crash risks.” It is hard to miss the number of drivers with phones glued to their hands. As they dangerously multitask while driving around other vehicles and pedestrians. Those who decide to use their phones are simultaneously contributing to a lack of visual, manual, and cognitive attention a driver needs to remain focused (Injury Prevention, 2015). With the potential of crashing being 23 times greater than the risk posed by drunk driving (No Texting, 2015). With statistical information providing a connection between distracted drivers and increased accidents, it is hard to believe there are some who feel it is not
... driving is avoidable. Using cell phone while driving is very dangerous and life risking because drivers would be easily distracted. Using cell phone while driving is unnecessary, unless in emergency situations.
Over the past two decades the use of cell phones has grown significantly and statistic from the past two years have proven that driving while on the phone or texting is becoming one of the leading causes of traffic accidents today. In 2011, a survey of more than 2800 American adults revealed that even thought they know that using a cell phone or texting while driving is distracting, they do it anyway, and teens surveyed admit that texting while driving is their number one distraction. "Each year, 21% of fatal car crashes involving teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 were the result of cell phone usage. This result has been expected to grow as much as 4% ...
“When a driver ‘talks and drives’ they are not only putting themselves at risk, they are also putting everyone around them in a dangerous situation” (ComparisonMarket.com). A study conducted last year by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, had cameras placed inside one hundred cars and trucks to track drivers' activities before a dangerous event occurred. Research shows users of cell phones while driving caused far more crashes and near misses than non-users. These statistics do not change even if the hand held device becomes hands free by means of a blue tooth or speaker phone. Hands-free cell phones may allow the driver to keep both hands on the wheel however, devices such as headsets or voice activated dialing led to longer dialing times causing the same level of driver distraction. Even though a study released by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety claims bans on handheld cell phones in many states seem to have had no impact on accident rates, drivers still should not use a hand held phone while driving in the car because car accidents associated with hand held phone use account for nearly three hundred deaths per year showing cell phone users are four times as likely to get into an automobile accident serious enough to cause injury.
Forty-one years ago on April 7, 1973, Motorola engineer Martin Cooper changed the world by making the world’s first cell phone call. With a 10-inch-long, 2.5-pound phone nicknamed “the brick” he called his engineering nemesis at the much bigger company Bell Labs (Here& Now, 2014). The phone gave 30 minutes of talk time after 10 hours of recharging and it cost a grand total of $3995. In those days, the average middle-class person could not afford to buy a mobile phone. By the late 1990s, cell phones became progressively accessible to the overall population. (Ef.org.vt.edu, 2014). Ever since then the sizes and the technologies in and of cell phones has been changing to accommodate the masses. Decades later, cell phones, and now smartphones, live in the pocket or purse of nearly everyone in the United States. Cell phones tell us the time, give us directions, take pictures, entertain us and help us exercise, all while making it possible to post each and every sordid detail to the internet without going anywhere near a computer. These new devices however convenient also bring complications along with them. This research paper will delved into the advantages and disadvantages of a cell phone, visit the health risk and factors affecting people who are exposed to cell phones, Discuss how cell phones have changed our way of communicating and socializing with one another, outline preventative measures surrounding the way cell phones have degraded our way of life and expound on the Thesis: Though cellular phones have provided many advantages since inception their cause more harm than their benefits they are worth.
The effects of technology on society will always be a double edged sword. The debate is a never ending one, in which both sides have valid and compelling arguments. The Industrial Revolution reduced manual labor in the long run, but had negative consequences such as child labor and sweatshop conditions. Nuclear Power reduces the cost of producing energy, but raises serious environmental issues like pollution and radiation. In this day in age refusing to assimilate to at least some form of modern living is simply not an option. One invention causing controversy today that has yet to cease being alter, modified, and “improved” since its debut is the ever present cell phone.
The use of mobile phones while driving are a major destruction to the drivers, it is definitely no different from a mother trying to nurse a baby at the back sit. A good percentage of road accidents has been attributed to driver destruction. (David and William, 2001) There are evidence of cell phone related road carnages and this remains to be a concern. In 1999 a girl was killed by a driver when he got destructed by a phone, same case reported last year and even the death of a state corrections officer on North Carolina. However much drivers say they have a right to use their mobile phones, they should know of the destructions it causes when
Cell phones have been known to distract the driver from concentrating on the road. But should cell phone use while driving really be banned?
Over the last few decades, the use of cell phones has become a very common tool. Furthermore, Technology has certainly advanced, and the cell phone is becoming the most preferred mode of communication. The demand for a cell phone is growing every day. In addition, the use of wireless technology is affordable, and anyone can buy a cell phone at a reasonable price. They come in all shapes and sizes. They range from black to bright metallic white. American public use of cell phones is increasing everyday. As the number of people using cell phones increase, the use of cell phones while driving will also increase on our streets and highways. At the same rate, motorists still converse on cell phones and write text messages while driving. Motorist will also engage in other activities apart from driving. For example, drivers will text when driving, and they will dial numbers. Drivers will receive calls and converse with the recipient for long periods. Again, driving demands your full attention, and your concentration needed when talking on the phone. However, it means that the driver has to divert his attention to the conversation, which leads to less concentration on the road. On the contrary, one can therefore connect motorist’s accidents and cell phone usage while driving.
The invention of the cell phones have changed the lifestyle, and the way people communicate. Despite their effective way of communication, the use of a cell phones while driving results in negative effects to driving performance. Many statics show that driving while talking is a serious issue, because it is the cause of many accidents. The solution is to make cell phone use while driving illegal, and creating phone applications or preventions that will make it difficult to text while in a vehicle. Furthermore, operating a cell phone at the wheel is on the verge of being banned by law in every state, and some have already started this solution to the problem. Cell phones have now become a necessity but have also become a burdens to the human
