With the introduction of the computer and internet in the late 20th century, e-learning tools and delivery methods expanded. The first MAC in the 1980′s enabled individuals to have computers in their homes, making it easier for them to learn about particular subjects and develop certain skill sets. Then, in the following decade, virtual learning environments began to truly thrive, with people gaining access to a wealth of online information and e-learning opportunities. By the early 90s several schools had been set up that delivered courses online only, making the most of the internet and bringing education …show more content…
Especially for global organizations, live classroom-based training is becoming too costly and cumbersome. Even if employees had the time to attend all the courses and seminars and to read all the books and reports they should to remain up-to-date in their area of work, the cost of such learning would be prohibitive. The need to transform how students learn points to a more modern, efficient, and flexible alternative: e-learning. Today's learners want relevant, mobile, self-paced, and personalized content. This need is fulfilled with the online mode of learning; here, students can learn at their own comfort and requirement. The mission of corporate e-learning is to incorporate the students with an up-to-date and cost-effective program that yields motivated, skilled, and relevant graduates in future. It's convenient.
This is obviously the greatest benefit of online learning; as long as you own a computer and have an internet connection, it doesn’t matter in which part of the world you are. Learners can access information from anywhere, anytime. Furthermore, distance is no longer a barrier to learning, whether academic or professional. Especially for corporate training, the ability to reach an unlimited number of employees quickly and regardless of their location has greatly benefited organizations all around the
In his article, “Can You Be Education from a Distance?”, James Barszcz effectively weighs the pros and cons of online education compared to the traditional method, while effectively supporting his position with factual information and statistics. While distance education proves to be convenient for students, Barszcz asserts that it eliminates valuable experiences necessary in order to get the most out of the material being learned.
Workplace learning refers to learning or training undertaken in the workplace (Craig 1996). The field of workplace learning is also known as Training and Development, Human Resource Development, Corporate Training and Work and Learning (Craig, 1996; Piskurich at al., 2000; Driscoll et al., 2005; Smith et al., 2006). The traditional context of learning is experiencing a radical change. Teaching and learning are no longer restricted to classrooms (Wang, Wang, & Shee, 2007). The term e-learning refers to the use of electronic devices for learning, including the delivery of content via electronic media such as Internet, audio or video, interactive TV, etcetera. For the purpose of this study, we define “e-learning” as teaching and learning that

Distance Learning vs. the Traditional Classroom Non-traditional students are finding it easier and easier to maintain a job, a family, and pursue a college career at the same time. This is possible because more and more non-traditional students are receiving an education using distance learning, as opposed to traditional, in-the-classroom teaching. Distance learning is basically taking college level, credit-bearing courses via the Internet. One of the most obvious advantages of distance learning is that it puts the classroom in your home, office, or wherever you can find a computer and log on to the Internet. However, there is much controversy regarding the quality of the courses being offered on the Internet versus the quality of courses taught in the traditional classroom.

Nowadays, teaching is no longer restricted to face-to-face interaction between the students and the teachers. (Yueh & Hsu, 2008). The usage of learning management systems in the classroom and in the workplace continues to play an important role in helping instructors, trainers and educators in meeting their pedagogical as well as their organizational goals (see Argyris, 1977; Beatty & Ulasewicz, 2006; Liu, Li & Carlsson, 2010; Shrivastava, 1983; Ong, Lai & Wang, 2004). Becoming ubiquitous since the 80’s and 90’s, learning management systems (LMS) are one of the means of e-learning—a learning situation where instructors and learners are separated by distance, time, or both (Raab, Ellis, & Abdon, 2002) as well as m-learning (mobile
Abstract: Recently, there has been a rush to create web-based instructional courses. The approach that is being taken to create web-based courses is to create websites that will function as the central distributors of information and materials. Based on the format and content of the course, the student is to go through lesson by lesson to complete courses. In this paper, I address some of the problems inherent in this approach, especially with respect to 18-22 year-old undergraduate education.

As the economy has changed in the last ten years so has the schools budgets and they are looking for ways to keep costs down. There is much evidence that distance education can be more cost effective than traditional education. Everyone can save a substantial amount of money by going with an online education because schools would not need facilities and equipment. Schools would also save money by not needing to provide services and programs to students. Students would save by not needing to drive to and from school, buy school supplies, and they can earn a degree in half the time than a traditional school setting.

E- Learning is a very useful tool when it come to train all kinds of individuals but there are some disadvantages to it as well. There are many issues when it come to E- learning, The most common issue is that E-Learning is dependent on technology. This is an issue because what if the traineer doesn 't have the ability to access the learning tool For example internet, more and more E-learning programs require the internet at some time. Well what happens when the trainer doesnt have access to the internet or the internet fails? Technology advances are great but they are not a 100% reliable all the time. Another disadvantage to E-Learning is that it 's not always a reliable training programs. Meaning that if the job required skills to handle face to face interaction with others, how do you teach that through an online program? There is a limitation on what skills you can teach through E-Learning, some skills need to be taught through experience. E- Learning is programed to teach to different learning styles. This is problem because not everyone learns the same way. This is a disadvantage because what if your trainneir can not learn though this method or has some type of learning disability how
In a K-12 setting, distance learning or traditional learning requires careful planning that must take place in order for the educational process to work for the students. When we look at both forms of education there are still pros and cons to both. Although online learning has made a major impact in the world of education, many people have not accepted this form of education. One of the reason for their concerns is that students cannot get fast answers to their questions about the assignment from the teacher. Another concern is that the students cannot perform effectively in a group collaboration that is taking place online. Also, students may not effectively do their homework from an online program. Lastly, some families do not have the technology at home for online learning.
