On the day October 15, 2015, I interviewed Julie Tamburello who is a veterinary assistant and Banfield Pet Hospital in Willoughby. The main job of a veterinary assistant is to care for animals and help prevent illness. Julie 's normal work day is as follows: clocking in, then she goes back and forth between looking at scheduled patients in rooms and drop off patients. She normally gives her patients checkups, which sometimes includes blood work and fecal tests. She also needs to collaborate with the doctors so they know what is going on with their patients. Julie needs to document everything about their patients including what she discovers while she is examining and what the owner of the patient has noticed. She also will help her coworkers
The greatest advantage is saving lives. Julie says there is no greater feeling than this. You give an animal a second shot and when the owner has lost all hope, telling them their pet will be ok and seeing their reaction really makes you feel good inside. You do things that matter and make great impacts on people’s lives by helping and saving their pets. A pet is a part of your family, to lose a pet feels like losing a family member. There are also disadvantages to this job. These include being bitten, you get bodily fluids all over you, and you have to deal with angry clients who can’t afford their pet’s medical costs so sometimes people surrender their animals to the pet hospital. Having animals come in who have been abused or seeing animals that have traumatic injuries is terrifying because you don’t know if you can help them and if an animal is abused, they could go back to their home to get abused again. The worst disadvantage which I had mentioned before is euthanizing an animal, it is truly
I don’t believe I would fit well because many of the traits Julie had described fit well for this job, I don’t believe I have. I like to work by myself rather than working with a lot people. Also, I don’t think I would like constantly working with clients because I do not have good social skills. I would not be able to handle getting yelled at my angry customers or having to put animals down. I ran over a squirrel and cried for an hour because it was so sad and I left awful. I would not be able to kill animals everyday, even if that is what is best. I am very glad I did this interview because I would rather find out I don’t want to do this occupation now than after I had already completed the schooling needed, wasting my
Veterinary technicians are like the techies of the theatre; the organization would be able to function without them, but it would be much harder. Things run a lot more smoothly with vet techs. There are multiple benefits that come with being a veterinary technician. These benefits include, but are not limited to, a high job outlook, great room for advancement, and only two years of schooling (depending on the route you take). Above all, the animals, who aren’t always able to help themselves, are being taken care of.
Banfield Pet Hospital was founded in Portland, Oregon in 1955 by Warren J. Wegert (Banfield Pet Hospital, 2013).
Cons are stress like when working long hours of the day, dealing with death of pets and distraught owners, exposure to allergens like pet dander, fur, along with radiation that have to deal with day-to-day basis. Combine them all with playing multiple roles throughout the day- receptionist, nurse, kennel attendant, technical assistant, janitor, and counselor. Unpredictable animals when animals feel threatened or alarmed and in unfamiliar area and especially when the animal is sick or in pain. Odd hours meaning depending on the employer his/her expectations may be expected to work on nights and or weekends. Weather may not be exempt either.Risk of getting injuries. Pros are pay that vet tech may not start off with twenty dollars but there room in there to grow. Room for advancement vet techs have the option to develop within their field which can translates to more money and opportunities. Flexibility vets have flexibility to work in a diverse set of environments. Opposite of a boring work environment the work environment is constantly changing every day. Hands on working with animals. Deals with various animals and numerous
Since March 2013 I have been tending to the animals at Tam O’ Shanter Urban Farm at weekends, which demonstrates both my dedication to animal welfare and also my ability to work as a team. As the farm is a popular visitor attraction, communication skills are vital and I feel I have honed them significantly, which will be helpful when consulting with owners of patients in practice.
“It depends on where people work usually, but the workers come in and check the pets that are in hospital that need additional care. Then in some way, workers have checklists for each hospitalized pet, so if they need medications, bandage changes, etc, workers can then keep track easier. Then workers go on to do medication for any animals that are boarding with the clinic in kennels. After that they check in pets that are coming for surgery or for a drop off exam/treatment.... ... middle of paper ...
The main purpose of her position is to help children and families with hospitalization, diagnosis, illnesses, and injuries. She stated that she works in the clinic so she sees patients and families from diagnosis or first visits to multiple return visits. She says she builds solid relationships with the children and their families. “It is most rewarding when I’ve spent time with an anxious child and done “everything” (diagnosis, teaching, medical play, procedure education, and support) and slowly see the change from a child not coping well at all, to coping well with support and slowly not needing me at all; it’s a little sad when they tell me they don’t need me to be present, but I know then that I have done my job because they’ve learned the skills to go through a procedure independently” (Tiller, telephone interview, December 8, 2016). Ms. Tiller stated that one of the challenges is that this is a
When owners take their pets to the clinic, they are understandably anxious about the results and outcome of the visit. While it’s the veterinarian's job to provide care for the animal, it’s also their job to put the owners at ease, reassuring them that their pet will indeed be fine. This communication is vital for building trust, as it lets the owner know what is happening to their animal and gives them confidence in believing that everything will be okay. What’s more, veterinarians that take the time to thoroughly explain procedures and instructions regarding petcare, are teaching pet owners how to better tend to their
When it comes to being a veterinarian, there will always be opposing arguments to your own thoughts. Everyone thinks that they know best for their own animals even when you were actually the one whom completed the eight and plus years of schooling as well as gave yourself around $200,000 of debt to help their animals somewhere in the near future. Of course, it is their animal and you must respect their opinions and choices whatever those may be in the end. However, you can still guide them as best as you can and try to tell them what is best for their animal. A major controversial issue with small animals, such as cats, dogs, and other small creatures, is to vaccinate or to not vaccinate. Veterinarians should have the right to state their
In one way or another, I have been taking care of animals my entire life. Growing up, I was completely dedicated to animals, caring for what could be considered a mini zoo. Naturally, as a child, I was set on a career as a veterinarian. Like most children, I was naive about the veterinary profession, but I had plenty of people to warn me about its challenges. Albeit initially discouraged from becoming a veterinarian, my search for a meaningful career not only revived my spark for veterinary medicine but also gave me the maturity and experience necessary to succeed in it.
Equine veterinarians inspire others by working long hours in dangerous conditions and sticking with them until the patient is in good health.
The complexity and diversity of the animal kingdom has always captivated me. This has resulted in a desire to accomplish a place in Veterinary Nursing. This aspiration has it’s origins in an early family life occupied with animals and pets, a developing interest in the science and wellbeing of animals and an expanding sense of duty for the care we owe to the creatures which convey true companionship and loyalty. Work experience and volunteering has taught me to recognise and appreciate the ‘guardian’ roles performed by the veterinarian and veterinary nurse which has served to increase my determination to pursue a career in a field which has an everlasting effect on animal companionship and welfare, as well as human industry, community and
To begin with, I need to be able to take care of any non-farm animal for this career. While watching over them, I have to check for any signs of injury, such as disease and other illnesses. The animal quarters have to be clean and suitable for them to sleep in. For example, I would have to clean a horse’s stable to make sure it is
The fact that animals will have someone taking care of them, feeding, bathing, and showing love and affection to them is truly amazing and is one of the best advantages of being a zookeeper. Another great advantage of being a zookeeper is that taking care of the animals is decreasing the chance of injury or disease, and freeing them from fear and distress. One ...

Advantages and Disadvantages What are the advantages of euthanasia in the vet clinic?
