Advantage Treatment Center Clinical Rotation The last clinical experience for the summer class was fascinating. I was able to spend my Friday morning with some incredible, well talented individuals that placed themselves in horrible situations. For my last clinical experience, I was at Advantage Treatment Center. In this clinical rotation, we were able to sit in on their educational therapy and peer education. In therapy education, they touched based on the emotional and social side of drinking. On the peer education part, an individual within the class gave a presentation on a topic that affects them and provided research and education on that topic. This clinical experience was one of my favorite, I enjoyed being able to watch their ways …show more content…
The most common therapeutic communications that were used, was accepting ad exploring. Accepting therapeutic communication is known as conveying an attitude of reception and regard. This communication was seen throughout both group sessions. They used accepting when information was given to them, and they understood what to do or how to do it. Another way they used accepting communication, is understanding how their emotional and social passed affected their drinking and or drug use. The other therapeutic communication that was used was exploring. Exploring means individuals where able to communication back and forth on their experiences within the world. They we able to dive further into a subject, idea, experience or relationship when using the exploring communications. Both therapeutic communications were commonly used, along with many …show more content…
Some individuals process of recovery is fast, while others is slow and takes extra work. The process of recovery for most individuals with dependency, abuse or other chronic illnesses related issues is done within a facility or therapy group. At Advantage, they provide many different education groups, such as the ones were observed today. They also provide different groups to help them achieve skills that they will need once released from the facility such as applying for a job, resume, and cooking classes. They find different ways in those groups and facilities to meet the demands of the individuals. They provide different programs they can use to help in the process of recovery. The support for clients with cognitive and mental health disorders is understaff compared to the expectations that these individuals need. These clients within these groups are able to find support though different organization, and through family. Others find support through organization here in town, such as Centennial Mental Health. Each person reacts different to their problems, and through these therapy groups they can find different ways to recovery and find support groups to help them
There are many ways to communicate and incorporate therapeutic aspects into dealing with any patient, but this also applies to group therapy as well. Yalom’s therapeutic
Treatment under this model is one of problem solving and utilizing an individual’s strengths to overcome his or her issues. The goal is to foster empowerment and self-sufficiency in order for the client to return to his or her environment (Woodside & McClam, 2014).
Communication is a vital part of everyday life. It allows feelings and emotions to be transmitted as a way of interaction. Therapeutic communication is an excellent form of interaction between an experienced interviewer and the interviewee. The National Commission of Correct Healthcare defines therapeutic communication as a “ face-to-face process of interacting that focuses on advancing the physical and emotional well-being of a patient” (CITATION). Kim Kardashian also partook in a therapeutic interview with Oprah Winfrey that follows all guidelines of an ideal interview with exceptional therapeutic communication techniques.
The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate my reflection and understanding in the Role of the Mental Health Nurse in an episode of care supporting and promoting the recovery of service users. According to the National institute for Mental Health (2004) recovery is a process to restore something or return to a state of wellness, is an achievement of quality of life that is acceptable to the person (Ryan 2012).

When looking at the recovery model from a psychiatric rehabilitation perspective, there are a number of characteristics of the recovery process that have been suggested, which include: it is possible for recovery to occur without professional intervention, however this then requires people who believe in and stand by the person in recovery; it does not include dependence on believing specific theories about the cause of the circumstance; it can occur even if symptoms happen to re-occur, but this does not affect the frequency and duration of these symp...

Mental health nurses are skilled at using therapeutic communication techniques. They use different forms of communication with patients to help them either heal or cope with their mental state. Giving recognition, being available and accepting, offering encouragement, verbalising observations, restating what the patient has said, seeking clarification, putting feelings of the patient into words, and many other therapeutic techniques are used when communicating with a patient.

The societal issue that I have selected is that of community inclusion for those people suffering with mental health issue and their ability to successfully integrate into the community, after years of institutional living. Two cornerstone of community building is movement beyond problem solving toward changing conditions, and the people affected should play a major part in improving the conditions (Homan, 2011). For those who are affected by mental illness, it is key that they are given resources necessary to live and thrive in their new environment.
Today I felt overwhelmed about my clinical day because I had patients with situations going on that I had never taken care of before in my other clinical rotations.
Substance abuse complicates almost every aspect of care for the person with a mental disorder. When drugs enter the brain, they can interrupt the work and actually change how the brain performs its jobs; these changes are what lead to compulsive drug use. Drug abuse plays a major role when concerning mental health. It is very difficult for these individuals to engage in treatment. Diagnosis for a treatment is difficult because it takes time to disengage the interacting effects of substance abuse and the mental illness. It may also be difficult for substance abusers to be accommodated at home and it may not be tolerated in the community of residents of rehabilitation programs. The author states, that they end up losing their support systems and suffer frequent relapses and hospitalizations (Agnes B. Hatfield, 1993).
My clinical rotation in the acute care hospital has definitely been a great learning experience, it was a big transition for me having been working in a long-term care facilities for six years. There were three positive aspects about my performance that I will take away from this learning experience.
All of the clients at the agency have either Medicare or Medicaid. A portion of the clients receive benefits from Social Security Administration. The agency also has a veterans unit which means a portion of the clients receive compensation from the Veteran Affairs disability department. The unemployment rate at the agency is high due to the mental illness of many of our clients. Community Connections does offer supportive employment services, to clients to help provide skill development and resources to successfully gain employment.
