Some people think that music programs and playing instruments are useless, but there are many advantages of music programs that people often overlook or do not care enough to even try to understand. When I heard about how schools in other states wanted to take music programs out of their schools because they felt it was unimportant and a waste of time, I could not understand why anyone would want to do that or why anyone would think that way.
Whether one realizes it or not, taking away music programs can take away a person 's voice. Most people who are quiet have a different way of speaking, one of these ways being music. Music is a way of expressing yourself when you do not have the words to do so. Some people are too shy to tell other people how they feel, and others do not want to talk about what is happening in their lives because it is personal; this is where music comes into the picture. People can say what they need to say by playing a piece or creating one of their own. Sometimes the sounds they create tell us much more than words could ever say.
Music can be used to speak to more than just a friend, but to anyone in any country; it is its own language. If i would meet with someone who was from China, and he or she did not speak a word of English, nor I of Chinese, someone could put the same piece of music in front of us. If we played the

In order to read music, one must know how to count the proper way and figure out what letter the note is so he or she will know where to play it. This is all to be done while staying on rhythm and moving his or her hands in the proper way. It requires a certain coordination and concentration that can only be gained from practice; most people cannot just look at a piece of sheet music and start playing it, one has to first gain the knowledge required to know how to play the piece
Throughout history music has played an important role in society, whether it was Mozart moving people with his newest opera or the latest album from the Beatles. Where would society be today without music? With schools cutting their music programs, the next Mozart may not get his chance to discover his amazing talent. Music programs are essential to education. To fully understand this one must understand how music helps the human body, why schools have cut music programs, and why people should learn music.
If one were to look back into the world’s history, one would find that an important and consistent element is the world of music. Music has presented itself in various forms throughout its spread and through our identification of its magical realm, people have been fortunate enough to come across a means of relation. Whether it is blues and reggae or rap and pop rock, there is music out there for everyone. Music can serve as a stabilizer for some, a relaxant to others, and to many a form of inspiration.
Many schools around the country are cutting their music program because of budget cuts in their counties. The arts for some reason are always the first to be cut; apparently the school doesn’t think they are essential to their students learning. Schools try to focus on the more important academic classes because of the high testing standards they must now meet. (Nesoff 2003) This is not just happening in poor school districts it is happening in large districts across the country including magnet schools for the arts: “When Albert Margolis and his wife attended the final music program for their son's kindergarten class in May, they were shocked when a teacher stood up after the performance and announced that the music program was cut indefinitely…Bathgate Elementary School in Mission Viejo in California's affluent Orange County, is a magnet school for the arts…” (Nesoff 2003) When magnet schools for the arts start cutting music you know there is a problem. The problem is the schools do not know the importance of music and the arts and how necessary they are for children to grow and become cultured in our society.

Since the earliest days of human civilization music has been a key tool for communication of stories which carried emotions through them. If we think back to our youngest years of life music has surrounded us whether it was from our parents singing us lullabies or from some sort of toy that played music we can say that musical melodies have helped shape or lives one way or another. Once we start growing up and figuring out who we are our musical preferences change; some people like classical and some like punk. We start to befriend people who like the same music as us and eventually we may attend a musical event. Our lives somewhat revolve around the music that we listen to.
Before addressing the need for music instruction in our schools I would like to briefly examine the need for education of any kind. Education is a means of making sure our society has a given set of knowledge. The set of knowledge we perceive ourselves as needing changes based on our surroundings and the issues we are dealing with. In American education's early history we perceived ourselves as needing a set of knowledge that included a common language and common view of history, as well as knowledge of those things with which we would interact every day. Music is used to create stories, make history, spread religion, and pass time. In the times of slavery, African Americans used music to pass time and forget about their problems for a while. During the 70’s hippies used song lyrics as a method of protest. Without music, America would not be as culturally developed and artistically modernized.
Music plays a huge role in the structure of a society. It can have both negative and positive influence on cultures and communities. First, musical sounds and instruments can be a dividing factor between the people within the same culture. These opposing social and economic identities within these cultures can lead unnecessary animosity between the members. However, music can also be one of the forces that unite members of a culture and provide a sense pride for everyone. This makes it easier for people to display their identification to that culture.

In 1991, 55.4 percent of public school eighth-graders took part in music classes at school. In 2004, this figure was just 49.1 percent. Money plays a huge role in this statistic: “...when funds are scarce, arts courses are usually the first to be dropped from a school’s curriculum” (“Arts Education”). While many argue that music education is an unnecessary cost for schools, it improves student’s overall well being.
There are many ways in which music affects and surrounds us. It is our creative outlet, our passion, our distraction, our night out or simply our moment of relaxation. Throughout the centuries, music has played a vital role in our lives. We as a society immerse ourselves in music day to day. From grandiose social gatherings and dances in the Middle Ages, to live concerts and monumental performances to date. Music is in films to elicit emotion and in television commercials to make us consumers of the newest technology. More importantly, it is in our preferred listening device because we choose the particular songs and artists we like and want to hear. The Marriam-Webster dictionary defines music as “sounds that are sung by voices or played on musical instruments; the art or skill of creating or performing music.” But why do we choose attend the Bruce Springsteen concert at Wrigley Field and not the Chicago Symphony Orchestra? What makes us enjoy one type of music or artist and not another? Whether you make music or simply enjoy it by listening to it, we are all connected to music in a variety of ways.

If music wasn't around, musicians wouldn't be able to write meaningful songs that showcased their emotions. Music is an outburst of the soul for musicians. For example, if a drummer had experienced a difficult heartbreak, and wanted to take his anger out on something, he could not make music on drums. Or if a singer just came back from a life changing vacation and wanted to sing about it, he couldn’t. Musicians would have no outlet, and therefore not have a way to express themselves, and maybe not even have a job. Even if you are not a professional musician, but just play around on an instrument, it still acts as a way of expression.
