Juno is a 2007 comedy-drama film directed by Jason Reitman about a precocious teenage girl who get pregnant and decide to give the baby up for adoption. The main character Juno Macguff was played by Ellen Page and Palulie Bleaker was played by Michael Cera. This film had a low budget of $6.5 million and had no major movie stars but yet it made $231 million and gained enormous popularity. Some critics like Hiram Lee says “For all its “offbeat” posturing, Juno is ultimately a very conventional movie (Lee, 2008).” While other critics like Jeremy Clyman say that “Her story is as far removed from the stereotypical teen-pregnancy narrative as is known - it's practically a different genre (Clyman, 2010).” I agree with Jeremy Clyman that the movie Juno is very unconventional.
One of the reasons why “Juno” is an unconventional film is because the parents are supportive. This is unconventional because in most teen pregnancy movies the parents are not supportive. In the movie “Juno” and her friend Leah who is played by Olivia Thirlby, go to confront her parents. After Juno breaks the news to her parents and tells them she wants to

Juno assures her that everything is fine and shows her the ultrasound picture. After showing her the picture Vanessa says “Juno, your parents must be wondering where you are. You might want to head home (Cody, 2007).” Juno Replies to her “Naah. I’m already pregnant, so they figure nothing worse could happen to me (Cody,
Juno subverts the audience expectations of typical teen films because it has a controversial plot of pregnancy and abortion, mature/adult themes and the characters are quite deep and complex. The construction of characters and how they develop drives the plot and sets the setting of the film is evident that Juno challenges the typical narrative that audiences are expecting.
in, she tells her of the twins she is to conceive and that she could
The film Precious focuses on Clarice “Precious” Jones, a girl whose life is far from ordinary. At sixteen years old, Precious finds herself pregnant with her second child, both of which belong to her father. Although he’s no longer in the picture, Precious experiences daily abuse from her mother, who thinks nothing of her. Regardless of her past, Precious is eager to give her children a better life than she had. After meeting Ms. Rein, her alternative school teacher, Precious finally gets the love and support that she’s been hoping for her whole life. Precious’ life may have had a different path had she received proper treatment earlier in life. Even though Precious is in the adolescent stage of her life, she can still benefit from treatment;
Author Amy Schalet ultimately brings up a delicate and sensitive topic about teens having sex, comparing the different mindsets of families in the Netherlands and in America. By Schalet carrying the interviews, she found out that teens in America are a lot more secretive with their personal lives, and would not discuss it with their parents, unlike teens from the Netherlands that eventually told their parents. While some people might say that it’s a matter of common sense, some other people might argue it has to do with culture. Catholics, for example, believe in celibacy until you have decided on the person you will marry. You are taught from young age to protect your body and mind from carnal desires and focus on other things that will benefit you on the long run. Obviously, times have changed, and not many people practice this anymore. We can see an example on shows on television about teen pregnancy, while these shows aren’t necessarily telling to go ahead and have children at young age, it might have negative impact on younger girls, almost like a unintentional role model. On the other hand, writer Jamaica Kincaid, demonstrates the In The Girl we see the other side of the coin, a mother that is so demanding and is always right, no matter the outcome, she is right, and things have to be done a certain way. I think a figure like this would not benefit
Adolescent is a stage of transitioning to adulthood.Our body changes physically and mentally, which also changes our behavior and our personality. The movie Juno is an excellent example of the developmental process. Juno starts with the pre-adult hero, sixteen-year-old Juno MacGuff, understanding that her one night stand with Paulie Bleeker, has brought about her being pregnant. “Lawrence Kohlberg described three stages of moral development which described the process through which people learn to discriminate right from wrong and to develop increasingly sophisticated appreciations of morality” (Oswalt, 2010). Although Juno is well aware that decisions like abortion are neither dangerous nor harmful, but she still fears it as she feels that
There has been an enormous amount of research conducted about adoptees and their problems with identity formation. Many of the researchers agree on some of the causes of identity formation problems in adolescent adoptees, while other researchers conclude that there is no significant difference in identity formation in adoptees and birth children. This paper will discuss some of the research which has been conducted and will attempt to answer the following questions: Do adoptees have identity formation difficulties during adolescence? If so, what are some of the causes of these vicissitudes? Is there a significant difference between identity formation of adoptees and nonadoptees?
Throughout the movie Mark the adoptive father became very close with Juno, conversations with her was very awkward, and people would probably say he was harassing or even falling in love. Juno goes over to show Mark and Vanessa the ultrasound picture of the baby, but it’s just Mark there. He and Juno went upstairs to listen to music, mark begins to dance with Juno which is not normal for an older man to be dancing with a young girl. Vanessa and Juno’s relationship was a mother to mother one. At the mall, Vanessa talks to the baby and Juno realize she made a good choose for her baby. Later on in the film Mark tells Vanessa that he doesn’t want to be a father as Juno witness this she doesn’t know what to do her mind wonders, but she still chooses to give the baby to Vanessa who is now a single
Mark Loring, the adoptive father, had an interesting and some might say not healthy relationship with Juno. They had a lot of the same interests and that created a bond that allowed them both to be themselves, where as with others they couldn’t. Juno reminded Mark of what his life use to be and he realized he wasn’t happy. Juno’s stepmother, Bren MacGuff, warned her to be careful, but she didn’t believe that Mark had ulterior motives. When he did make a proposition and told her he was getting a divorce, Juno was horrified and
we are people that are not trusting are self and teen pregnancy always happen in the world now. There's times where we are doubtful and we don't want to ask for help for the problem we are having in our society. You could ask of someone but instead we keep it locked inside of ourselves. in Helen frost's poetic novel Keesha's house, the doubtful teen stephie tries to figure out the best decision for her and people she cares about. The glamorization of teenage pregnancy has increased the different views on teenage pregnancies and also the way it influences young minds. In todays society the media covers stories on hollywood stars in the same way they would cover a teenage pregnancy story. "Forget leaking sex tapes, getting multiple plastic surgeries, and fist-pumping. The latest way to get on the cover of a tabloid these days? Get pregnant and have a baby when you're a teenager, and do it on TV"(McKay). The latest way to be put on tabloid like a movie star is to become pregnant as a teenager and become famous while doing it. In todays society young impressionable women are are infatuated with the media.
Teen pregnancy being more common in minority groups like African-Americans and people of lower socioeconomic status. Seen in the character, Chenille Reynolds is a teenage mother. Her son being about 2 years old, Chenille must have been pregnant during her middle or earlier years of high school. She doesn’t spend much time nurturing her child; rather her grandmother is the boy’s primary caregiver, as she too raised Chenille and her brother Derek. In the movie, Chenille was getting ready to go out with Sara, instead of having to worry about childcare, she is able to go and come as she pleases because of her family support system. This family dynamic is very common in the African-American community, emphasizing the importance of grandparents and how they have a huge involvement in the development of children and adolescents. Many children are raised primarily by their grandparents or an extended family
Mtv hopes that younger people understand that its difficult to take care of a baby and will wait to start families. Enjoy your teen years, avoid peer pressure and the responsibilities that come with being a parent to early. Most of the teen moms barely graduate or get any type of job training. Basically it’s hard to take care of a baby.
The Thriller was so fascinating and intriguing that everyone who saw it couldn’t wait for it to be released. However, after the movie was released, some people loved it and others questioned and criticized it. Though, it all too opportune that the film version of the wildly popular adolescent adult novel struggles remotely to assert itself as it seeks to appeal to the wildest possible audience. The movie “Divergent” is all about identifying yourself, curious about who you are and how you fit into different groups as you emerge from being a teenager to an adult.
Altogether, I think that Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant are not giving us the realistic views of young pregnancy and life after. These shows are not showing a good example for young girls out there. With all of the teen pregnancy our world has now, it is important that teens are taught the dangers and consequences of what could happen if they get pregnant. Instead of glamorizing teen pregnancy, the shows should have made these girls’ lives and situations more realistic so that young viewers would have a better understanding of what could actually happen
