Adolf Hitler was a german politician who was the leader of the Nazi party, chancellor of Germany from 1933-1945, and fuhrer of Nazi Germany from 1934-1945. He was a powerful and spellbinding speaker who attracted a wide following of Germans who were desperate for change.
Born on April 20, 1889 in Braunau am Inn, Austria Hungary, Hitler was the 4th of six children born to Alois Hitler and his third wife Klara Polzl. In 1889, the Hitler family moved to Linz, the capital of upper Austria. “Seeking a career in the visual arts, Hitler fought bitterly with his father, who wanted him to enter the Habsburg civil service. After his father’s death, Hitler eventually persuaded his mother to permit him to pursue his dream to because an artist. He was an unlikely leader but he still formed a connection with millions of Germans. “Hitler was an archetypal “charismatic leader”. He was not a normal politician. When he spoke in beer halls in the aftermath of Germany’s defeat in World War I, his weakness were seen as strengths. His hatred chimed with the feelings of thousands of Germans who felt humiliated by the terms of Versailles Treaty and sought a scapegoat for the loss of the war” (Rees). Millions of people felt like he connected with their fears, hopes and latent desire to blame others for their predicament. In 1923, Hitler was arrested after an attempted coup and was sentenced to 5 years in prison of which he served less than a year. In his time in prison, he wrote Mein Kampf “my struggle” which was part of an antisemitic political treatise.
