Most adolescents believe that they are mature and capable of making serious decisions and feel that they are able to handle their emotions under severe and stressful situations. However, this thinking is a normal part of the adolescent stage. Research provides evidence of major brain development in teenagers and emphasizes the inability of these young adults to understand all of their irrational and emotional actions. The maturing adolescent brain is biologically and therefore psychologically unable to comprehend the long-term consequences of committing serious crimes.
Though the basic concept of decision making may appear simple to most, several factors affect how the brain processes emotions into rational actions. First, environment affects a young adult’s view on what is acceptable in society to handle difficult and controversial situations. Rolf E. Muuss explains in his work Theories of Adolescence that “environmental influence stimulates, modifies, and supports growth” (113) in order to emphasize that the atmosphere one is in has a direct correlation with decision making capabilities. The surroundings and family structure one lives in and observes throughout the stages of development have permanent effects on personality, decisions, and futures of that individual. Although many adults may try to understand the thoughts behind a teenager’s irrational actions, few comprehend that the biological age rarely matches the mental age in the adolescent stage of maturity. John E. Horrocks explains that “mental age is an index of the developmental level in intellectual function that a child has reached at a given time” (443). In summary, Offer, Rabshin, and Offer describe how the work of “[i]nvestigators who have spent most of their professional lives studying disturbed adolescents stress[es] the importance of a period of turmoil through which all teen-agers must pass in order to grow up into mature adults” (181). Research has been done to distinguish the difference between legal age and the age of the mind; society’s job is to take this knowledge into legal situations to give adolescents fair trials.

Thompson supports his claims by first citing an example of a real case involving a minor. He then cites research from reliable sources as evidence to back up his claim. McMahon’s “Inside Your Teenager’s Scary Brain” discusses how adolescent’s brains are delicate and can easily affect their development in a good or bad way, depending on the individual’s experiences. According to Jensen, a Harvard neuroscientist and senior neurologist at two Boston hospitals, “teenage years comprise one of the brain’s most critical periods of development”. She parallels her experiences with her own children with observations of teens in general. With new research continuing to surface, studies illustrate how susceptible juvenile’s brain are and how this could generate different techniques on how society, parents, and teachers handle them.
The 40 Developmental Assets is a list of assets that help young children to understand how relationships with your family and friends work and how teens can live a healthy life with them. One way to better understand the Assets is to look at how the appear in novels. One novel the assets can be seen is The Pigman by Paul Zindel, a book about parents influences on kids and shows childrens care for people they love. Thompson writes how even though teens cannot be understandable, they have a certain behavior that was caused by violent or harmful issues they've had at their young childhood. In today’s generation there are many children and teens that commit crimes to satisfy their self being. Every day we see in the news about the reasons why children or teens commit crimes like murder or homicide. Sentencing juveniles to life in prison is not a right response to prevent homicide and serious murder, because their brains are not fully develop and the bad environment they live in. Teenagers or children need to be remain unformed of preventing crimes in today’s society. With this said, juvenile’s mental brains, backgrounds and growth are the reasons why they are not proficient to maintain themselves in a prison cell.
