Everyone admires successful people and hopes to own the same fame and wealth like the successful people. Unfortunately, most of us never find out the reason why these people success and discover the perspiration that is left on the path to success. To find out what efforts and accomplishments they made in the career and to learn what I can improve from them, I decided to interview Addison Kim, a local analyst who work in venture capital and private equity. From the interview, I learned the interviewee’s background and gained advice about my career and opinion of the financial industry. Addison Kim is a graduate of University of Texas at Dallas, Naveen Jindal school of management, and majored in finance and global business. While at college, …show more content…
He explained main factors to become a financial analyst, professional skill and communication skill. For professional skill, Addison Kim said I will learn the basic knowledge from the college. He suggested some advanced class that he had in his college years and these class benefited him in his career. Addison Kim pointed out the most serious and core technic will be learned in my internship and future job. In communication skill, Addison Kim strongly suggested me to focus on it because communication skill is the main component of financial analyst. If professional and technical skill is the key to become financial analyst, then communication skill is the key to obtain advanced management position. To Improve my communication skill, Addison Kim said I should improve my English, and become an active speaker. Attending club activity, joining competition, and networking are three recommendation for me in college. By accomplishing the three targets, Addison Kim believed I will gain improve on leadership, public speaking, team work and so on. I agree what he said because I cannot ignore my prior weakness which is an obstruction for my career. I was surprise that Addison Kim introduced his significant skill, time management, and explained the reason behind. This skill helped him to gain enormous success in college year which he won the Dean’s Cup. Time management will urge me to accomplish every small target and finally achieved the big target. Time management will not make me left behind the schedule, and let me put more time on my effort to make the effort
His career in journalism began after he was rejected from every advertising agency he applied for. He finally ... ... middle of paper ... ... ssed with such skills to be successful, there is always time to improve both business and designing skills to become a successful fashion designer. Other than how this book personally encouraged me and discouraged me, it was eye opening to see such a coincidence of birthdates among all-star hockey players and how Bill Gates just happened to be born in the wake of computer technology.
To achieve this, “banking firms provide [them] with a way to maintain [their] elite status in society by providing avenues to wealth and power that other professions do not” (179). They leave them unconsciously with an ultimatum, to either continue living their prestigious lifestyle and be the in the top with the elites, or settle for lower than what they’ve worked for, which is any other career path. Students who attend Princeton and Harvard who aspire to become teachers or writers are told they are settling for less than what they deserve and will be “more happy” with an investment banking career. There is a subtle form of manipulation being acted upon prospective students from investment bankers which is hidden by all of the positive, glamorous stigmas of Wall Street. To fully understand Wall Street as a whole, someone must know the small components that make it come together as a whole. This is shown through Karen Ho’s observations such as learning that students at Princeton and Harvard do not need to hold a finance degree to obtain a job on Wall Street. Whereas, Yale and Brown students must have a finance degree and are forced to show their abilities at a higher level than Princeton and Harvard students. Underneath all the dashing appearances and smart conversations on Wall Street, there is a hidden bias and a constant manipulation system in order for them to get what they want. The small components of Wall Street consist of their “small” priorities,
Nearly everyone has the desire to be successful in their lives, whether it be measured in the amount of wealth a man owns or the accomplishments he has made in his life. Therein lies the most common, the success in a man's profession. There are multiple approaches to this connotation of success where a wide range of techniques can be applied. One might think that the only way to reach a particular level of success is to take on a competitive nature and achieve that coveted position of number 1. However, being competitive does not necessarily insure that a person is ‘successful.’ They must be competent in their field to reach the top spot. An example of these two sides can be found within Arthur Miller’s Death of A Salesman using the characters Willy and Bernard.
When I have great communication skill, I will be easier to get along with everyone in the company. Communication skills can help you to do teamwork more efficiency, give me the ability to convince business partners. This skill will help you a lot to grow and move up inside company. Related to lawyers and doctors, accounting does not involve much reading, writing and communication skills. Becoming a successful businessman in today’s society is truly a commendable triumph. Success in their career is something every assiduous businessman strives to achieve. Jeff Kaplan can rightfully hold this title, he is the epitome of a successful business man due to working hard his entire life. Throughout his interview the stories that are told establish his credibility and make him relatable to his audience. Kaplan appeals to ethos and pathos through his life experiences, the lessons he learned, and the roads he walked to gain his success, making it crystal clear that his example is one to be followed by aspiring businessmen everywhere.
Moreover, this concept of free will and becoming financially self-reliant is still prevalent in modern society. The mid-twentieth (20th) to the early twenty-first (21st) century has become the age of entrepreneurship, where peoples from all nations no longer desire to work “for the man” but create their own legacy of prosperity. Likewise, it is a period in time that has redefined the way in which those from all walks of life can obtain success and wealth. Hence, the evolution of reality TV stars, YouTube sensations and rappers from being ordinary individuals to becoming fashion designers, actors and CEOs. However, our definition of success is not only defined by wealth it also includes having a life of meaning that is similar to that of Dr. Martin Luther king Jr. and Malcolm X. Certainly, I am speaking of a life that encompasses the ability to change our world for the better.
“By Failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” The great mind of Benjamin Franklin said that and it connects with many aspects of every day life. One that it connects to greatly is communication. Right now my future plans are to become a certified public accountant. “In this job with how global it is becoming you are constantly communicating.” Which was said by Miss Lauren Kolarik. “Communication is very important,” she continues, “in this job you use every type of communication.” There is conversational communication when you are working with your team in auditing a company, there is professional communication when talking with a partner and there is written communication when writing emails to clients and overseas workers. All of these types are important because they all accomplish a different but equally significant aspect of the job. Through the course of the interview, one idea remained constant in every answer, be prepared. In the field of accounting you will be communicating in a conversational, professional and written form. It is crucial you know which type of communication to use and how to vitalize its
Before being cultivated with cocaine and hookers as the key to success in Wall Street, Jordan Belfort demonstrated the incontrovertible advantages of positive business communications. One of which pertains to the effectiveness of corresponding with customers over the telephone. Especially for stockbrokers, having a conversation over the phone is pivotal when trying to sell a stock to a potential investor. Jordan Belfort begins his process with a potential client by stating his name, where he was from, and what he had to offer. This is a method of gaining the trust of a customer that he does not know. Furthermore, he engaged the customer with an optimistic attitude and stated how the stock could affect him or her in the best way possible. By providing the customer with onl...
Often, success is rooted in factors beyond an individual’s knowledge or control. These exterior forces may vary greatly in all aspects except one: the successful individual has no power over them. Society likes to paint famed success as the result of years of arduous work in which an individual seizes every opportunity and eventually sees all of his struggles pay off as his goals are achieved. Sure, success would have been a distant dream if not for the seizure of opportunities and all that hard work, “but in fact [people who stand before kings] are invariably the beneficiaries of hidden advantages and extraordinary opportunities and cultural legacies that allow them to learn and work hard and make sense of the world in ways others cannot” (Gladwell 19). Take, for example, the story of a successful career man who made his living for 39 years thanks to a conversation behind closed doors of which he was not aware until he inquired about it years later. Greg Counts spent all but the first few years of his career in transportation and logistics because of a job he took in the first few years of his life after college. The
“I just messed up. Here I was, runner up to the valedictorian and the Eli Lilly scholarship, and I had just thrown it all away to party. I just hated myself for blowing my chance,” This quote from my career interview with Justin explains very clearly the reason I chose to interview my cousin for this assignment: to explain the struggle between what you are and want to be. Justin Lanman, who was kicked out of Rose Hulman for failing grades and later graduated from the continuing studies program of Indiana University, is a 32-year-old male works at Cook Medical and lives at home with his parents due to an accumulation of loan and credit card debt. Throughout this paper, I will detail my career interview with Justin and try to do him justice in
Dave Armstrong is about to graduate from Harvard Business School and is facing three career options. The decision problem that Armstrong should be considering is not which of these three jobs should he take, but rather what job will satiate his career goals. By asking this, Armstrong can gain a complete perspective of his options instead of being confined to three career options that may not be in his best interests. His objectives are not clearly outlined in the case; however, we can infer from the manner in which he is describing the jobs that he would like to have ownership in a company, enjoys thrilling non-office jobs, and wants to grow his network. Also, he has to take into consideration his wife’s objectives for him of having a job
Finance is a field that had always fascinated me right from my undergraduate college days. What make me interested in this particular field of study are the art of finance and the complexity of investment market which would allow me to employ my personal skills, such as analytical and communication skills, along with my personal characteristics such as dedication and compassion for what I do. As one of the most important sector in the world, I believe it would provide me with a broad range of career options.

According to Career Quotes (n.d.), “What is the recipe for successful achievement? To my mind there are just four essential ingredients: Choose a career you love, give it the best there is in you, seize your opportunities, and be a member of the team” (Career Quotes, n.d.). In this paper I talked about the following questions: how do you use critical thinking in decision making and problem solving in your professional life?, what are the three most important elements of personal and professional etiquette that you employ in your professional life?, what are your strengths and weaknesses in your professional life?, and what strategies do you employ to stay on-task and on-time in your professional
