Instructional Design Model Comparison
Instructional Design is a systematic approach to design, evaluation and management of instruction. It helps to facilitate learning in an effort to improve. There are many models that have been developed to assist in the design of instructional materials. This paper will compare three: ADDIE, ASSURE and Kemp with a focus on online learning.
ADDIE Model
The Addie Model is the traditional format used by instructional designers and many models have based their information off of the ADDIE concept. It consists of five phases: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation (Davis, 2013).
In the analysis phase, the designer will determine and define the instructional problem to be solved and …show more content…

The model has six phases that are meant to build off each other. The first phase is to analyze the learners, their general characteristics and learning style. Understanding the learners will help the designer work through the next steps. The next phase is to state the objectives, learning outcomes and desired behaviors the students will demonstrate. Selecting the technology to be used and then utilizing the selected technology are the next two steps. This is where the ASSURE model differs from many as it specifically builds technology and media into the model. Require learner participation and give the student feedback is the next step. The designer will find ways to involve the learner in the learning through activities, discussions or hands on projects. The final letter of the model, E, is for evaluation. Evaluate the effectiveness of the learning and the media used against the objectives to verify the intended outcome was achieved. Modifications or revisions will then be made as necessary based on the information from the evaluation. It should be noted, that changes and modifications can be made at any stage as well and the designer should not wait until the evaluation if a change is needed (CSU-Global, …show more content…

It focuses on understanding the learner and their needs and not just on a problem to fix. When working on a new course the designer has a defined roadmap of where to start and how to go through the process until the end. This is useful for instructional designers because there are no questions about what to do next. Since technology is built into the design, this is a strong format for designing an online course. The learner will have opportunities to participate and use active learning throughout the class as well.
Kemp Model
The Kemp Model is an instructional design model that combines continuous implementation and evaluation throughout the process (CSU-Global, 215). It has nine parts and is non-linear as is portrayed by its oval shape which discourages a sequential approach. The designer can choose the starting point of where to begin and doesn’t have to get caught up in completing each step before moving on to another (Simon & Knowlton 2008). This encourages a continuous cycle for planning, design, development and evaluation.
The nine parts are as follows:
• Identify instructional problems, and specify goals for designing an instructional
