There are several stimulant medications that are commonly used throughout the world to treat behavioral disorders for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. Some of the medications used to treat this disorder are Adderall, Concerta, Focalin, Methylin, Ritalin, and Vyvanse. These are all stimulant drugs that help treat the symptoms of ADHD in very similar ways. I will specifically be focusing on Adderall. Adderall is constructed of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine which are central nervous system stimulants. Central nervous system stimulants affect the chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control. Adderall is a combo drug that includes Amphetamine and Dextroamphetimine. Adderall is considered a schedule II drug, which means that it has a high potential for abuse, has severe restriction and may or may not lead to extreme psychological or physical dependence. The physical appearance differs between Adderall and Adderall XR (extended release). Adderall is a round peach pill, while Adderall XR is a blue or orange oblong shaped capsule filled with small beads that dissolve at different times in the digestive tract. It is used to help increase attention in patients who are overactive, easily distractible, and have trouble concentrating. Adderall “brings the brain down from a state of overstimulation to one of baseline stimulation” (medicaldaily.com). It was approved in 1960 by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Adderall is an immediate-release tablet that should be given in the morning, and if necessary, an additional dose can be given 4-6 hours later. The maximum dose of the non-extended version is 40 mg daily. If 40 mg is exceeded it would generally be for someone that suffers from narcolepsy. Adderall XR is an extended release capsule that lasts longer than regular Adderall, and should only be given once a day. If taken more than once day insomnia can become an issue. Adderall is taken in two main ways, orally and snorted. If taken orally, there are two different pill types that can be taken: instant release and extended release. Instant Release comes in tablets which size from 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 12.5 mg, 15 mg, 20 mg, and 30 mg. They are taken 2-3 times a day, with around 4-6 hours in between. Extended release comes in 5 mg, 10 mg, 15 mg, 20 mg, 25 mg, or 30 mg capsules. Extended release is taken only once a day, in the morning. While it should be taken whole, extended release capsule can be broken and the inside contents can be mixed with applesauce. When using this method, the applesauce must be swallowed whole, without being chewed. This will allow all of the Adderall to be ingested and the effects to be highest.

There are drawbacks to taking medication however; the trial-and-error process, cost of medication, and the side effects that can come with medication. Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder, otherwise known as ADHD, is the most common psychiatric condition effecting 9.5% of school-aged children in the United States (intuniv, 2013). If the disorder goes untreated, it will cause more long-term side effects and difficulties for the individual as an adult. Adults who have this condition face several adversities in every day life, such as impulsive behavior, low self-esteem and poor work performance. People are not aware of the complications that come with ADHD in adults. Not knowing the symptoms of the disease can cause people to not be sympathetic when they are interacting with someone with disorder.
The truth is within the past two generations a phenomenon has taken place in connection to children across this country. Today one and a half million children take medication to focus attention and control hyperactive behavior (Freed 216). Most of these children have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. There are three types of ADHD the first consists of inattention only or the inability to focus attention. The second consists of hyperactivity and impulsivity. The third form of ADHD is a combined type where the child or adult has difficulty dealing with attention and hyperactivity and impulsivity. Children with ADHD are typically prescribed a drug called Ritalin (or one similar to it), which is a methylphenidate (recently amphetamines have been used also) making it easier to control behavior.
Since the production of Ritalin (brand name for Methylphenidate Hydrochloride) during the mid-1940s, it has been enhanced and formulated to treat various disorders such as fatigue and depression but it was not until the 1960s when it was discovered to be effective in treating Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
