Adderall has been a drug that has been given the nickname from many people the “life-saver.” Although this drug is recommended for those to treat attention deflect hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy, people use it for their own reasons or procrastination issues. Adderall is a brand name that has a combination of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine which make a stimulant to contour act the nervous system. This creates the help to increase focus whomever consumes the product. In the advertisement we created we used math and those who need remembering history before an exam to use this product. To many people, math is a hard subject and with Adderall students can study more efficiently without stressing to figure out each concept for constant hours. With people who need the extra help to remember history dates, we targeted them because in history courses we know there is numerous information people has to learn for exams. Coffee can be efficient for a couple of ours, but Adderall a person can stay up for hours. The fear for many students in failing their parents in not graduating college is high and took advantage of the situation and incorporated it in our advertisement. In every advertisement, the truth is always extended or fabricated. We are not sure that complex math solutions could be solved with Adderall, but we assumed because the concentration is boosted with the stimulant drug. The human nature we produced in our advertisement is that students are negotiable or easy to persuade for the reason students want to succeed in college in any way they can. Advertisements one of their methods in suggesting potential consumers their product is the best to satisfy their needs. In this strategy, companies stretch the truth and also make new knowledge about medicine that is in their favor to look like they make the best products in fixing their illness. However, companies begin to go more in depth and also place the categories depression and anxiety as signs for people who do not have an illness to buy their product. In comparing my advertisement and the other two, I found that we stretch the truth in some areas. In saying that Adderall helped in solving complicated math problems was bias for the reason that we do not know for sure if it does help for those reasons. For the other two advertisements, they mentioned that their relationship between child and mother would improve if they take Adderall. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurobehavioral disorder of childhood as it affects an estimated 5% to 7% of school-age children. Adderall has a structural and action resemblance to other recreation drugs methamphetamine, which is commonly known as crystal meth, and ecstasy.
Advertisements are one of many things that Americans cannot get away from. Every American sees an average of 3,000 advertisements a day; whether it’s on the television, radio, while surfing the internet, or while driving around town. Advertisements try to get consumers to buy their products by getting their attention. Most advertisements don’t have anything to do with the product itself. Every company has a different way of getting the public’s attention, but every advertisement has the same goal - to sell the product. Every advertisement tries to appeal to the audience by using ethos, pathos, and logos, while also focusing on who their audience is and the purpose of the ad. An example of this is a Charmin commercial where there is a bear who gets excited when he gets to use the toilet paper because it is so soft.
It is clear that most DTC advertisements in the pharmaceutical industry easily approach consumers and inject distorted information about drugs into them. DTC advertisements provide clarity in product performance claims, with less reliance on implied benefits (Beltramini 574). Furthermore, DTC advertisements have made a huge impact on public consciousness with constant exposure to their consumers and sell less effective drugs (Lurie 445). Consumers do not recognize the danger of ineffective drugs due to the embellishment of the marketing strategy. Zelnorm, a drug for women with irritable bowel syndrome, is an example of how a highly visible television advertising campaign makes this less effective drug popular. From a pharmaceutical company’s analysis, while 0.1 percent of patients treated with the drug had a heart attack, chest pain, or a stroke and one died, patients taking a placebo had 0.01 percent of these symptoms and none died. Despite inefficiency of the drug, it became a popular treatment for irritable bowel syndrome because of television advertisement campaign; it displays attractive young women whose bellies are inscribed with the catchphrase, "I feel better" (Shuchman 2239). Within my group’s pro-Adderall campaign, we promoted adderall use among high school students who were struggling with a relatively poor attention span, inability to focus, and were thus unproductive in their schoolwork. We created a video commercial that follows the same tactics pharmaceutical advertisements use, described in Dumit’s Drugs for Life. Dumit emphasized how ambiguous pharmaceutical ads were in order to reach a broader audience, and reinforced that all people experienced the stated symptoms to some extent. The companies only needed a small fraction of the viewers to self-diagnose themselves and purchase the product. Likewise, we targeted students that were experiencing heavier workloads coming into high school, and understood that the majority would struggle in maintaining attention throughout long hours of lectures and worksheets.
Tired and overworked students will try anything to get that extra edge to stay up all night and study. Students, specifically college students, find solace in a little pill called Adderall. Adderall is a drug used for treatment and control of neurological disorders that affect adults and kids, specifically those with attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. Formerly known as Obetrol, it was first approved on February 21st, 1996 by the FDA and was in the warehouses by March 11th, 1996. However, Adderall was used as a substitute to caffeine, speed, or to even reach a natural high by students at high pressure college and prep schools before it was a drug known to aid people with ADHD (Kent 2013).
The percentages of the two surveys prove that a greater percentage of doctors believe that prescription drug ads misinform patients. These ads misinform patients, encourage over-medication, and pressure doctors and medical providers. The counter side states that prescription drug ads educate patients, encourage the correct usage of drugs, and cause patients to ask their doctors about possible treatments. Both sides have examples and evidence, but the cons of prescription drug ads are stronger.
Most people want to succeed but today nobody wants to put in the hard work hence Adderall sounds like the perfect solution except no one stops to think of the consequences or even bother to do some research on the drug they are placing in their body. Advertisements are used to manipulate the reader into thinking they need Adderall, or as if they have ADHD. This manipulation works because not many people challenge advertisers instead the consumer takes it for what it is. The consumer silences themselves by not challenging and researching the drug that is being ingested. It started to become more and more known to parents that there could be an explanation to why their child was hyperactive. The Food and Drug Administration also played a part by making the drugs used to treat ADHD more known to the public. What was once seen as a simple fact of childhood was now being seen more as a hyperactive disorder. Companies that made the medications, such as Adderall and Ritalin, would advertise to parents that the medicines would make the child smarter or more inclined to do choirs around the house. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic condition that is characterized by difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior. Adderall increased in popularity upon approval by The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be used for the treatment of ADHD and treatment of the sleep disorder, narcolepsy, in the 1990s. Although Adderall has been proven effective in decreasing and preventing ADHD symptoms, there are concerns regarding cardiac side effects and the potential for dependence and abuse of its chemical components.
A diagnosis found that out of the 15 percent of high-school age children who take ADHD pills, the true rate of children needing to be medicated is closer to 5 percent. This over-diagnosis and prescription is a direct result of intense, multi-million dollar marketing campaigns of ADHD medication by the drug makers, through celebrity ads as well print and television ads that prompt patients and their families to ask doctors about those specific drugs. And the tactic has paid off, with a quintupling of stimulant sales since 2002, to over $8 billion in revenues.
