Riordan Manufacturing Active Directory Proposal
Introduction
The following is a proposal for the implementation of Active Directory within the Riordan Manufacturing organization. The primary reference for this proposal is the Microsoft guide "Best Practice Active Directory Design for Managing Windows Networks." The contents below will provide a working definition of Microsoft Active Directory, the benefits it will provide to Riordan, a base diagram of Active Directory for Riordan, and a detail analysis of the Active Directory diagram.
Active Directory
Active Directory (AD) is different from specialized and often disconnected directories. AD is designed to play many different roles within an organization. The roles range from managing Windows networks to managing directory enabled applications. (1) The bottom line is that Active Directory empowers organizations to centralize their directory management in a more streamlined, powerful and flexible manner.
Active Directory Benefits
Active Directory brings a wide range of benefits to an organization. The primary benefits stem from the use of AD as a network operating system (NOS). This proposal focuses on utilizing AD as a NOS. The following are highlights of some of the advantages of AD:
Centralized management of very large Windows networks (Active Directory is designed to support millions of objects).
The ability to eliminate resource domains, including the hardware and administration they entail.
Policy-based desktop lockdown and software distribution.
The ability to delegate administrative control over resources where appropriate.
Simplified location and use of shared resources.

In conclusion AD provides very powerful and centralized NOS that can greatly benefit Riordan Manufacturing. Diagram 1 demonstrates the initial proposed implementation of AD. In the future it may become clear that modifications to this proposal may be necessary. For example, that fact that China is a joint venture and connects via satellite only, may require that China utilizes its own forest directory. Furthermore, department accounts OU's may be unnecessary in favor of simplified group assignments and permission setting within the default users containers for each site. These potential modifications only demonstrate the flexibility and power that AD offers Riordan now and in the future.

Riordan Manufacturing will more than recover the expenditures of this IT project within two years of the upgrade. Riordan will experience an increase in sales and a decrease in inventory loss due to accurate and low-cost inventory management. On-going costs will be minimized with an internal IT department handling support and maintenance of the new system. All of the project's objectives have been met, and Riordan's expectations have been fulfilled.

A network can be based on either a peer-to-peer level or server-based, also referred to as domain-based. To distinguish the difference, a peer-to-peer network, also known as a workgroup, is a network in which a group of computers are connected together to share resources, such as files, applications, or peripherals. The computers in a peer-to-peer network are peers to one another, meaning no single computer has control over one another. There is also no central location for users to access resources, which means that each individual computer must share their files in order for other computers to have access (Muller, 2003, p.411). “In a peer-to-peer environment, access rights are governed by setting sharing permissions on individual machines.” (Cope, 2002) On the other hand, in a domain-based network, the computers connected together are either servers or clients. All of the other computers connected to the network are called client computers. The server is a dedicated machine that acts as a central location for users to share and access resources. The server controls the level of authority each user has to the shared resources. When logging on to the network, users on client machines are authenticated by the server, based on a user name and password (Lowe, 2004, p.13).
For the most part we have addresses the needs of our sales force on a case by case basis but going forward we really need to ensure we have a defined policy to streamline remote access. To accomplish this there are a few benchmarks we need to achieve. First of all the network has to be reliable or in more technical terms it needs to have high availability. Most importantly we need to make sure that the network is secure as much as it is possible with all the different types of users asking for access. Lastly, we need to address how we handle employees using personal or non-company issued computers and how we ensure that those machines meet of other remote access policies.

Mobile technology will continue to grow and more people will gain access to smartphones. Ads on mobile will boost the business for ads and awareness of the ads. Local Area Networks also called LANs have been a major player in industrialization of computers. In the past 20 or so years the worlds industry has be invaded with new computer technology. It has made such an impact on the way we do business that it has become essential with an ever-growing need for improvement. LANs give an employer the ability to share information between computers with a simple relatively inexpensive system of network cards and software. It also lets the user or users share hardware such as Printers and scanners. The speed of access between the computers is lighting fast because the data has a short distance to cover.
