Understanding of one’s self and being self knowledge is a critical step in not just achieving cultural competence but in that person life as a whole. Understand and being self knowledge will determine how that person will interact with others including strangers, and love ones. That will help the person understand what is important in life. Although I have not completed the self assessment exercise help me understand and have a better reflection on the subject. To care without bias nor prejudices is how I approach every situation regardless if it is in the work place or not, because I would not like anyone to judged me without understanding me as an individual and my custom because all of us are a part of or linked to a cultural unique lifestyle. We are different in a lot of unique ways, who want to be accepted and be treated with kindness, respect regardless of my cultural background. Providing culturally competent care is a vital responsibility of a nurse’s role in healthcare. “Culturally competent care means conveying acceptance of the patient’s health beliefs while sharing information, encouraging self-efficiency, and strengthening the patients coping resources” (Giddens, 2013). Cultural competence is a skill essential to acquire for healthcare providers, especially nurses. Two strengths I learned during my Self Awareness assessment were being a good listener and showing loyalty. I really try to be a good listener in all situations. I like to hear the whole story or complete process in whatever it may be. I am cautious about making decisions without having all the details. I don't mind taking the time out to get the details. Yes, it may take some time up front and may not lead to a quick decision but in the long run it prevents mistakes and errors as well as misjudging which can lead to more heartache and pain down the road. Characteristics can be as diverse as ethnic background, language spoken, gender status, physical appearance, race, and religion to name a few. Migration from various countries is creating a diverse population with different cultures and languages within the United States. Due to these cultural differences and lack of knowledge, disparities are increasing. Studies have shown that both language barriers and lack of cultural customs can hinder the services provided to the patient by the healthcare worker (Renzaho, Romios, Crock, & Sonderlund, 2013).
