Academic integrity is essential to being successful in an individual’s academic career. When a person does not complete their own work, they are doing nothing but taking away from their own academic experience. When teachers assign assignments, they are meant to help the student learn in a hands-on way; instead of just learning from a lecture. If a student doesn’t take this opportunity to practice and perfect the material, they are only taking away from themselves in the long run, since they won’t be learning the material adequately. Plagiarism is the act of taking someone else’s work, and passing it on as your own. Plagiarism is bad because it does not give the original creator the proper recognition for their work, it also prevents the plagiarizing student from learning and it basically deceives the person who is grading the work. In addition, plagiarism suggests that the student in question is of bad character as they are willing to lie about their work. While still in the learning phase, students need to be developing skills and acquiring their own knowledge. This means writing their own essays, and copying someone else's work does not allow them to learn. When a student is caught plagiarising, it can potentially be harmful to their future career. People who cheat will probably come across as dishonest to their employers. In addition, if they enter a field where someone relies on their knowledge for important reasons, such as becoming a doctor, they cannot honestly say that they possess the right knowledge to fulfill their role. Cheating also isn’t fair to the person whose work is being copied. The original author works hard to produce their work. Copying it without giving credit is very disrespectful. In addition, other students work hard for their results. Students who do not do the same also disrespect their peers. One reason is laziness; a student may decide to plagiarize an author’s work due to the fact that they are lazy and do not feel like using their brain to put it in their own words. Another reason a student may decide to plagiarize is because of time; a student make have a very right schedule due to work, other classes, etc. So in this case, they feel like they do not have enough time to put a lot of effort and thinking into a paper, so they choose to copy the author’s ideas. A final reason may include depression and stress; one student may have a difficult life due to excessive amounts of depression or family issues everyday outside of school. However, this defeats the whole purpose of school. If students are plagiarizing to get by, not only is there no creativity and originality, but it would not benefit them going on in the real world. It will not teach them how to use their brain to think critically on what they are doing. Depending on the severity of the plagiarism, consequences can vary. Some of these consequences could be getting kicked out of college, losing your position at a corporation or institution and possibly running into the risk of finding employment
Plagiarism takes various forms. A student may cheat doing something as extreme as purchasing a paper, hiring someone to write a paper or turning in a paper freely provided by a friend. Many students unknowingly commit Plagiarism by failing to properly cite their sources crediting the authors. Still others cite, but plagiarize by coping much too much and writing far, far too little of their own synthesized thoughts and ideas. Students must be careful about copying too much. If a paper is mostly other writers’ material, that can be considered Plagiarism, even if the student credits their sources.

This number I’m sure has grown since this report and will continue to grow with the development of the Internet. There are a number of ideas and strategies that can be employed in order to stop this ever-growing phenomenon. As teachers and adults, we are responsible for stopping this trend and educating students about the consequences and dangers of plagiarism. I believe there are a variety of reasons individuals plagiarize. First, students are insecure with their own ability; they don’t believe they can do the work therefore they take others. Second, students believe they can get away with the act because they know others who have plagiarized, and there were not any consequences. Lastly, students are uneducated on what plagiarism is and do not know the consequences of their actions if they commit an act. These ideas will be the focus of the position taken on plagiarism in today’s academic society.
