Looking back and reflecting on any moment in time will most likely cause you to remember only the most significant and broad parts, whether positive or negative. However, I think it’s just as important to remember the small details. When reflecting back on English 1010 it’s easy to do the same thing, just remember the bigger moments that affected you. Once again, I think that it’s just as important to look for the small details and little ways each assignment affected your writing. Two particular assignments I’ve done for this class that helped my overall sense of writing were my Academic Discourse essay and my Genre Experiment #1.
The academic discourse assignment I wrote on my experiences as a bowler affected my writing in a positive way

because it was a unique assignment that made me write in a way I had not in a long time. My english career up until this point had been primarily literature based. All the writing of essays I did were analysis’s of novels and articles. Not that this particular writing is better or worse than the literature analysis it’s just that’s what I was used to. Coming up with the ideas of bowling and the things I took out of it were not remotely difficult, but moving away from the formal and systematic writing I was used to proved to be quite a challenge. I had to use an informal tone and yet continue to describe terms which, to me, didn’t seem like it made very much sense. Then I spent some on it and tried to focus on the history and progression of myself during my time as a bowler and it seemed to work. This took me out of my comfort zone early in the semester and I’ve benefited from it ever since. The genre experiments were designed to force the writer to write out of their comfort zone so if the academic discourse assignment was able to then Genre Experiment #1 really took me out.
I chose to do the personal essay for my first genre experiment not only because of it's simplicity but because I wanted to try and do a paper specifically on myself. I wrote about origami and what it's done in my life. It ended up being a lot easier than I thought it was to write about myself. I’ve never really done a paper where I talk up the things I do and make myself look better because I’ve never enjoyed or felt good doing it. Another difficulty I faced while writing this essay was that I had to make something seemingly pointless sound really interesting. I had to use more attention grabbing words that I wouldn’t normally use in my writing. I wanted to make sure I got the right background knowledge for origami so I did have to do a good amount of research. It made me realize how big origami really was which gave me a better appreciation for it and in turn made it easier to write about. This genre experiment expanded my writing and forced me to think outside the box and hopefully that effect rolls over to help my writing in future …show more content…
essays. As a whole, English 1010 most definitely affected my writing in many ways. I’ve been forced to experiment with new ways and methods of writing and I hope to keep the experiences with that to use in my future writings. I didn’t expect my english class to affect me in any way other than to improve my writing but I found it did things for me outside the classroom. I quickly learned after the first couple essays we wrote for class that I couldn’t just push it off for till the end and do one quick draft. I would have to take some time after I wrote it and go through some sort of revision process to make it an acceptable college paper. I’ve never liked it when people read my papers or really evaluate anything that I’ve done. Allowing my roommates to read my essays to help me revise my paper was important enough to get me out of my comfort zone so I took the risk. By the end of the semester now I hardly think twice about letting someone else read my work. This has applied to my everyday life because now I’m more willing to let people evaluate and critique other things I’ve done. Not that I no longer care what people think of me at all but I'm much more willing to let other people critique the things I’ve done and as strange as that sounds, a majority of the credit goes to english 1010. My overall sense of writing has been changed for not only future english assignments but writing assignments for other types of classes as well.
The actual class time along with the Academic Discourse essay and my Genre Experiment #1 paper are the main parts of what has molded my current writing. Normally in english I would be writing on novels and articles but now I’m writing on things that I like or that are interesting to me. I am even being forced to write about myself, which is a good thing. I suppose if I had to wrap up english 1010 as a whole it would be you should experiment with new ideas and new ways. One of the main reasons we are here at college is to try new things and cultures outside ones that we are familiar with, this class just made sure we did
that.
Discourse communities are groups of people with a unique point of view. There are many discourse communities around your everyday life. These communities are part of the entire human environment. Many discourse communities are distinctly large due to all the societies wanting the same things. My discourse communities are mostly Facebook.
I have learned a lot so far in English 1101, about myself and about writing. I have discovered that it is sometimes difficult for me to find topics to write about, but once I get an idea it is very easy for me to start writing. English has always been one of the subjects that I tend to struggle with, but this class has helped me realize that I actually enjoy writing. I have never really been able to write a lot about topics of my choice in the past. I am more accustomed to writing papers related to one specific topic. This class gives you a prompt to write about, but you are generally able to expand on that and choose your own topic as long as it relates to the prompt.
In fact, I began this semester with plans to accomplish skills that would eventually bring me to an understanding of what a great writer is. During the summer I attended an English mini course which proved to be just a quick version of some high school rules on writing, that did not require much thinking or writing tasks, but it did provide an understanding of what was going to be expected in colle...
English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
A discourse community is a group of individuals all with relatively the same ending goal or original interest that all have their own way of participation and have different motives, it is easier to feel more included in a discourse community once literacy achieved. Discourse communities can be found in many different places; it is just a matter of what is being looked for. These communities can come from the entire population, all of the people who speak the English language, any place of education, restaurants, any home, or even at the gym/ recreation center. In order to become literate in the fitness discourse community the differences in basic motives, the values that are important, and the places available to work out at must be understood.
A discourse community is a group of people with relatively the same goals and interest to achieve a specific goal. Discourse communities gain there members by qualification, shared objectives, training, or persuading others to join their discourse community. In order for a group to be a discourse community, they must have their own languages, text, rules, and ethics that will make the discourse community run more efficiently. They will also have a form of intercommunication among the group to keep everyone involved or informed with upcoming events or just important news. Discourse communities will have a type of mechanism to provide feedback to help improve the group. The participatory mechanisms provide feedback from inside and outside of
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Throughout the English 101 course I have been able to improve as a writer by composing essays
As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101 taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was required.
Director Steven Spielberg and auther Markus Zusak, in their intriguing production, movie Saving Private Ryan and book The Book Thief, both taking place during World War II. However , in Saving Private Ryan Spielberg focus on a lot of complications that occur during war , but guilt was one difficulty that stood out to me. Zusak, on the other hand , showas that having courage during war can be a advantage and also an disadvantage depending on the situation. Both director and author grabed the audience attention with emotional and logical appeal.
In life we encounter many things that can withhold someone from obtain a good education, but in the society we live in today were are giving the tools to make sure the things that withhold us from accomplishing our goal does not hold us completely back. Professor Deborah Brandt defines literacy sponsors as “agents, local or distant, concrete or abstract, who enable, support, teach, model, as well as recruit, regulate, suppress, or withhold literacy—and gain advantage by it in some way. A discourse community is a group of people involved in and communicating about a particular topic, issue, or in a particular field. In other words, it is a group of people who have similar backgrounds, language, and values. They share an interest in certain topics, share a body of knowledge about those topics, and possess a common vocabulary for discussing those topics. According to “The Concept of Discourse Community,” by educator and researcher John Swales, there are six characteristics that make up a discourse community. They are common public goals, mechanisms of intercommunication among members, participatory mechanisms to provide information and feedback, utilizing one or more genres in communication, a specific lexis, and a threshold
The assignments given in English 101 were very interesting for me. I think that the course layout couldn’t have been better. There were a few assignments that I found interesting. In particular, I found the article by Malcolm Gladwell, “Offensive Play” to be really interesting. It was relatable to me because I used to play a lot of sports and now I invest a lot of time watching high contact sports such as football and it is intriguing to see the “behind the scenes” aspect of the game. However that being said, I did not really like writing the summary of this article. I found it difficul...
When we talk about English 1110, everyone actually knows the main part of the course is writing. The goal of this class is to improve structural, style of writing, thoughts and performances of students. During this semester, the curriculum includes essays and topics from many different aspects of different issues which are useful to me. From this class, I had the opportunity to improve my writing skills. For example, before writing a paper, I always have outline, strategies, arranging and modifying as well as finding ideas to improve my writing style in a better way. Before taking English 1101, I just wrote essay with what I think of that time and did not care whether my essay is understandable or not; however, i have been improved for the past three months. When I see a title, I start to write down all ideas and also create an outline and order of all documents in a reasonable manner. In addition, all response papers that I have done during this semester I started to have different way of thinking by listening my friend's arguments, feedbacks or comments, agreements or disagreements. Those group activities from friends were helpful because I started to recognize what are right and wrong things in my essay. From there, I have my own personal opinions and defend my arguments.
This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the time restraints are not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free moments I have. Strangely enough, I?ve found the college English experience to be much more rewarding and enjoyable than in high school.
Jan blommaert and Chris Bulcaen makes a brief introduction to the study of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). CDA intends to use social-theoretical method in discourse analysis and is primarily linguistically based (Blommaet & Bulcaen, 2000, p.447). It intends to analyze the structural relationships of dominance, discrimination, power and control through a textual study (Blommaet & Bulcaen, 2000, p.448). Based on the assumption that social discourse is constructed and socially conditioned, CDA explores the power dynamics in this process.
