Abraham Lincoln was born in February 12, 1809 he was the 16th president. Abraham Lincoln, a self taught Illinois lawyer and legislator with a reputation as an eloquent opponent of slavery, shocked many when he overcame several more prominent contenders to win the republican party's nomination for president in 1860. His childhood was rough. his mother died when he was nine years old and his family moved several times; from kentucky, where he was born, to indiana, and then their family moved to Illinois in his early 20’s. he had a sister named Sarah, her nickname was sally she was born to Nancy Hanks and Tom Lincoln. The school did not last long, however the importance fo education was impressed upon abes mind. When Abe was nine his mother Nancy got really ill with a milk sickness she died at age 34. Her Death left Abe and sally in a deep depression and in they were now in sole care if there father, who was overwhelmed by the land so they could grow food. Historians report that he was a tough man who was known for pushing his on doin in anger at times. weather he he would have been viewed as abusive or whether he he was a “man of his day” is debated by experts. The children were heartbroken at losing their mother and the house was a mess without nancy to bring order to it, Tom realized he needed help, so he left nine year old be and eleven year old Sally alone in the cabin that they grew up in while he returned to kentucky to find a new wife the children had little to eat other than dried berries that had had been stored away by Nancy. A neighbor who stopped by reported that the children were terribly skinny, filthy and the house was a complete mess and in terrible condition. Be and sally were alone for about half of that following year they have been certain they had been abandoned.
