Recommended: Abortion pros and cons arguments

Pro-Choice. Why be pro-choice one may ask? Being pro-choice means advocating abortion or having the choice to have an abortion. Abortion should stay a option for pregnant women because many of them are not financially ready to support a child financially or emotionally. Millions of unintended pregnancies in the United States each year end in abortion, as it is a way of saving the mother and the child a life of struggle. Unwanted pregnancies take a toll on women and if they are not financially, emotionally, or physically ready for a child, then they should have to choice to abort.
Financially, raising a child can be overwhelming. A September 2005 survey in the peer-reviewed journal Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health asking women why they had an abortion, found that 73% of respondents said they could not afford to have a baby (Abortion). In this country, there are 46.5 million people living at or below the poverty line. Frightening but true, over five million more women than men are living below the poverty line (Poverty in the United States: A Snapshot). If any of these women living below the poverty line become pregnant, they should have the option to abort if they realize that they cannot provide for that child. If not, a child growing up in poverty may be compromised in his ability to succeed in school; his social and emotional well-being, and his health may also be affected. Abortion must remain an option for women because there many women in the United states not financially, emotionally, or physically ready to have a baby. Why should the government force women to bring children into the world? Millions of unintended pregnancies in the United States each year end in abortion. It is a way of taking responsibility for unwanted pregnancies, as pregnancy takes a toll on women. If a woman is not financially, emotionally or physically ready for a child, she should have the option to abort. Giving women an option to abort is a freedom that women should continue to have.

    Perhaps no contemporary issue inspires more heated debate than abortion - the deliberate termination of a pregnancy. Many have witnessed and experienced the bitterness of such a controversial debate. There are two types of people in this world. Pro - choice activists believe in the right to choose a safe, legal abortion. Pro - life activists believe that abortion is murder. Why is the debate over abortion so emotional? Some argue about the rights of the fetus (unborn child) while others argue if abortion should be legal. The debate usually strays from these basic issues. For example, pro - choice advocates try to convince their opponents women's rights are at risk. Pro - life supporters argue that the rights of the fetus are as important as those of the mother, and that abortion is murder. "Other pro - choice defenders argue that if abortion is murder, why do so many pro - life advocates fight against the most logical methods of preventing this so - called genocide - birth control and sex education?" (Reardon, 138) Another reason for the bitterness of this debate is that most pro - choice and pro - life advocates reached their conclusions about abortion very early in life, probably even earlier than they can remember.     Perhaps one of the most controversial issues debated between lawmakers and legislatures is abortion. Disputes concerning abortion began during the 1820s. By 1965, with a few exceptions, abortion had been made illegal in all states. Abortions were only permitted when the fetus was deformed, or if birth of the baby would harm the mother’s life. All of this changed however in 1973 during the landmark Supreme Court Case of Roe v. Wade which legalized abortion. The Supreme Court recognized that it is solely a mother’s choice whether to become a parent. The court also recognized that an issue as significant as child bearing warrants the highest level of constitutional protection. According to the Court, a state’s interest in potential life is not “compelling” until there is a status of viability—the point in pregnancy at which there is a reasonable possibility for the sustained survival of the fetus outside of the womb. The Court also affirmed that the right to privacy is not absolute and that a state does have a valid interest in safeguarding maternal health, maintaining medical standards, and protecting potential health. Under the Court’s decision, a state may, but is not required to prohibit abortion after viability, except when it is necessary to protect a women’s life or health.

In the beginning the problem was more about protecting doctors who have licenses. “Regular doctors thus had an incentive to ban abortion as part of an effort to drive irregular doctors many of whom were women out of business” (Straggenborg, p.211). The AMA (American Medical Association), which was the group that the regular doctors made, started a campaign that made the people believe that the white population was getting smaller and the population of the immigrants was rising. Abortions were made illegal to insure the stability of the population of American citizens. It seems odd that the only reason that abortions were made illegal at one point was because of money issues and a lust for white supremecy. It seemed to have nothing to do with the rights of a child or a woman. One of the reasons why abortion came into question in the beginning of the 1950s was due to the fact that a lot of doctors and lawyers were seeing many cases of illegal abortions and it was becoming a large social problem. Since there was a lack of competition for legal abortions, doctors found no problem making them legal again -- “They felt that abortions were justified under certain circumstances, and they begun to see the laws against abortion as an infringement on their own medical discretion” (Straggenborg, p.212). And so the issue arose again with many pro- choice groups speaking up. Then with court cases like Griswold v. Connecticut and Roe v. Wade, abortion again became legal in the United States.
