Abolish State Test
Being a student is already a very stressful part of life, and worrying about passing state tests does not make it any easier. The older a student gets the more important it is to score high on state tests. State tests have many negative effects on students. Some effects are that, they don’t help students learn, everyone is not a good test taker, schools take too much time for preparation, and the tests discourage student achievement. State tests along with the ACT/SAT tests should be abolished. These tests can gradually have a very negative effects on students. A score on a test should not limit how far someone can go in life.
State test can have a negative impact on a child’s learning. From about the time a student reaches the third grade, it is required to take state test each year. If a student does not score well, that may risk the chance of them advancing on to the next grade level. Someone who continuously does not score adequately on these tests may become discouraged in their academics. They then may develop the mindset that they are “dumb” and will not think much of themselves. This can cause a student to complete only the bare minimum in school, which will eventually lessen their chances of graduating. State standardized test do not really measure a child’s academic success. Studies have shown test anxiety prevent students from scoring well on test. “When students feel nervous, their capacity to think clearly and solve problems accurately is reduced” (Strauss “Test Anxiety”). Therefore, this limits their ability to do their best in the test. Everyone is also not able to retain the information needed to pass these tests. Student’s may perform well with regular class work, but when it is time to take test, they may get nervous and fail the
